Mr. Barber's Project Lead The Way Civil Engineering Architecture class recently completed a multi-disciplinary concrete-pouring activity that required mathematical calculations to determine materials for a hands-on construction assignment.
So I have had Calculation Theme by Metric stuck in my head for fucking forever! It was rather annoying after awhile. Soooo, I did this. I created a song...lyric...page...thing?....whatever.... Enjoy. Really fucking large - even after fucking Flickr resized it. -_-
I recycled some of my sims for this picture. Some of you may or may not recognize them. If you do, good for you. If you don't, so what.

History:
WWII Construction of Vessels in Australia
A program for Australian Construction was set up to supply craft for the U.S. Army, Australian Army, & the Royal Navy, through the Australian Shipbuilding Board, who distributed the orders to the various shipyards.
W. Ryan & Son's, of Taree, and E. Wright of Tuncurry were just two of many shipyards contracted to under take the orders for the various classes of vessels.
Boats built by W. Ryan & Sons were fully completed and tested, whereas E. Wright's shipyard at Tuncurry, supplied the hulls only, which were towed to either Sydney or Newcastle .

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. It rises with an elevation of 8,586 m in a section of the Himalayas called Kangchenjunga Himal that is limited in the west by the Tamur River and in the east by the Teesta River. The Kangchenjunga Himal is located in eastern Nepal and Sikkim, India.
The main peak of Kangchenjunga is the second highest mountain in Nepal after Mount Everest. Three of the five peaks – Main, Central and South – are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal. Two peaks are in the Taplejung District, Nepal. Kangchenjunga Main is the highest mountain in India, and the easternmost of the mountains higher than 8,000 m. It is called Five Treasures of Snow after its five high peaks, and has always been worshipped by the people of Darjeeling and Sikkim.
Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest. Allowing for further verification of all calculations, it was officially announced in 1856 that Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain.
Kangchenjunga was first climbed on 25 May 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band, who were part of a British expedition. They stopped short of the summit as per the promise given to the Chogyal that the top of the mountain would remain inviolate. Every climber or climbing group that has reached the summit has followed this tradition. Other members of this expedition included John Angelo Jackson and Tom Mackinon.
The Kangchenjunga landscape is a complex of three distinct ecoregions: the eastern Himalayan broad-leaved and coniferous forests, the Eastern Himalayan alpine shrub and meadows and the Terai-Duar savanna and grasslands. The Kangchenjunga transboundary landscape is shared by Bhutan, China, India and Nepal, and comprises 14 protected areas with a total of 6,032 km2:
- Nepal: Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
- Sikkim, India: Khangchendzonga National Park, Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary, Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary
- Darjeeling, India: Jore Pokhri Wildlife Sanctuary, Singalila National Park, Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Neora Valley National Park.
- Bhutan: Torsa Strict Nature Reserve
These protected areas are habitats for many globally significant plant species such as rhododendrons and orchids and many endangered flagship species such as snow leopard, Asian black bear, red panda, white-bellied musk deer, blood pheasant and chestnut-breasted partridge.
GEOGRAPHY
The Kangchenjunga Himal section of the Himalayas lies both in Nepal and India, and encompasses 16 peaks over 7,000 m. In the north, it is limited by the Lhonak Chu, Goma Chu and Jongsang La, and in the east by the Teesta River. The western limit runs from the Jongsang La down the Gingsang and Kangchenjunga glaciers and the rivers of Ghunsa and Tamur. Kanchenjunga rises about 20 km south of the general alignment of the Great Himalayan range about 125 km east-south-east of Mount Everest as the crow flies. South of the southern face of Kanchenjunga runs the 3,000–3,500 m high Singalila Ridge that separates Sikkim from Nepal and north Bengal.
Four glaciers radiate from the peak, pointing roughly to the north-east, south-east, north-west and south-west. The Zemu glacier in the north-east and the Talung glacier in the south-east drain to the Teesta River, thereby forming a part of the Brahmputra catchment. The summit of Kangchenjunga is the highest point of the Brahmaputra basin. The Yalung glacier in the south-west and the Kangchen glacier in the north-west drain to the Arun and Kosi rivers, thereby forming a part of the Ganges catchment. The summit of Kangchenjunga, therefore, also forms a part of the Ganges basin. The glaciers spread over the area above approximately 5,000 m, and the glacialized area covers 314 km2 in total.
The main ridge of the massif runs from north-north-east to south-south-west and forms a watershed to several rivers. Together with ridges running roughly from east to west they form a giant cross. These ridges contain a host of peaks between 6,000 and 8,000 m. On the east ridge is Siniolchu (6,888 m). The west ridge culminates in the Jannu (7,710 m) with its imposing north face. To the south are Kabru North (7,338 m), Kabru South (7,316 m) and Rathong (6,678 m). The north ridge, after passing through the Kangchenjunga North (7,741 m), includes The Twins (7,350 m) and Tent Peak, and runs up to the Tibetan border by the Jongsang La, a 6,120 m high pass.
FIRST ASCENT
In 1955, Joe Brown and George Band made the first ascent on 25 May, followed by Norman Hardie and Tony Streather on 26 May. The full team also included John Clegg (team doctor), Charles Evans (team leader), John Angelo Jackson, Neil Mather, and Tom Mackinnon.
The ascent proved that Aleister Crowley's 1905 route (also investigated by the 1954 reconnaissance) was viable. The route starts on the Yalung Glacier to the southwest of the peak, and climbs the Yalung Face, which is 3,000 metres high. The main feature of this face is the "Great Shelf", a large sloping plateau at around 7,500 metres, covered by a hanging glacier. The route is almost entirely on snow, glacier, and one icefall; the summit ridge itself can involve a small amount of travel on rock. The first ascent expedition made six camps above their base camp, two below the Shelf, two on it, and two above it. They started on 18 April, and everyone was back to base camp by 28 May.
TOURISM
Some of the most famous views of Kangchenjunga are from the hill station of Darjeeling and Antu Dada of Illam, Nepal. The Darjeeling War Memorial is among the most visited places from which Kangchenjunga is observed. On a clear day it presents an image not so much of a mountain but of a white wall hanging from the sky. The people of Sikkim revere Kangchenjunga as a sacred mountain. Permission to climb the mountain from the Indian side is rarely given.
Due to its remote location in Nepal and the difficulty involved in accessing it from India, the Kangchenjunga region is not much explored by trekkers. It has, therefore, retained much of its pristine beauty. In Sikkim too, trekking into the Kangchenjunga region has just recently been permitted. The Goecha La trek is gaining popularity amongst tourists. It goes to the Goecha La Pass, located right in front of the huge southeast face of Kangchenjunga. Another trek to Green Lake Basin has recently been opened for trekking. This trek goes to the Northeast side of Kangchenjunga along the famous Zemu Glacier.
IN MYTH
The area around Kangchenjunga is said to be home to a mountain deity, called Dzö-nga or "Kangchenjunga Demon", a type of yeti or rakshasa. A British geological expedition in 1925 spotted a bipedal creature which they asked the locals about, who referred to it as the "Kangchenjunga Demon".
For generations, there have been legends recounted by the inhabitants of the areas surrounding Mount Kanchenjunga, both in Sikkim and in Nepal, that there is a valley of immortality hidden on its slopes. These stories are well known to both the original inhabitants of the area, the Lepcha people, and those of the Tibetan Buddhist cultural tradition. In Tibetan, this valley is known as Beyul Demoshong. In 1962 a Tibetan Lama by the name of Tulshuk Lingpa led over 300 followers into the high snow slopes of Kanchenjunga to ‘open the way’ to Beyul Demoshong.
IN LITERATURE
- In the Swallows and Amazons series of books by Arthur Ransome, a high mountain (unnamed in the book, but clearly based on the Old Man of Coniston in the English Lake District) is given the name "Kanchenjunga" by the children when they climb it in 1931.
- In The Epic of Mount Everest, first published in 1926, Sir Francis Younghusband: " For natural beauty Darjiling (Darjeeling) is surely unsurpassed in the world. From all countries travellers come there to see the famous view of Kangchenjunga, 28,150 feet (8,580 m) in height, and only 40 miles (64 km) distant. Darjiling (Darjeeling) itself is 2,100 m above sea-level and is set in a forest of oaks, magnolia, rhododendrons, laurels and sycamores. And through these forests the observer looks down the steep mountain-sides to the Rangeet River only 300 m above sea-level, and then up and up through tier after tier of forest-clad ranges, each bathed in a haze of deeper and deeper purple, till the line of snow is reached; and then still up to the summit of Kangchenjunga, now so pure and ethereal we can scarcely believe it is part of the solid earth on which we stand; and so high it seems part of the very sky itself."
- In 1999, official James Bond author Raymond Benson published High Time to Kill. In this story, a microdot containing a secret formula for aviation technology is stolen by a society called the Union. During their escape, their plane crashes on the slopes of Kangchenjunga and James Bond becomes part of a climbing expedition in order to retrieve the formula.
- The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai, which won the 2006 Man Booker Prize, is set partly in Kalimpong, a hill station situated near Kangchenjunga.

As a side note, a rough calculation shows that when I step down on one heel, I'm putting roughly 2000 lbs./in² on a very small surface. I should never walk on wooden floors in heels. I leave dents.

A-4 (V2) Rakete Steurung
A4 (V2) Rocket Control System
My impression of the A-4 as a student of the history of technology
As in many other technical areas, the most advanced technologies are developed initially for destructive means. The A4 was the first real rocket and the technology (and the engineers developing it) went on to pioneer the American space program and play important roles in the Russian space development as well. In the history of technology this was a pioneering effort - and like much of the other war technology developed by Germany, United States, Great Britain, Japan, and Russia - it was applied to improve the course of man eventually.

Easter Holiday, Roadtrip Idar-Oberstein
Easter (Old English: Ēostre; Greek: Πάσχα, Paskha; Aramaic: פֶּסחא Pasḥa; from Hebrew: פֶּסַח Pesaḥ) is the central feast in the Christian liturgical year.[1] According to the Canonical gospels, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. His resurrection is celebrated on Easter Day or Easter Sunday[2] (also Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday). The chronology of his death and resurrection is variously interpreted to be between AD 26 and 36, traditionally 33.
Easter marks the end of Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. The last week of the Lent is called Holy Week, and it contains Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Easter is followed by a fifty-day period called Eastertide or the Easter Season, ending with Pentecost Sunday.
Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox.[3] Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (even though the equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on March 20 in most years), and the "Full Moon" is not necessarily the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian Calendar whose March 21 corresponds, during the 21st century, to the 3rd of April in the Gregorian Calendar, in which calendar their celebration of Easter therefore varies between April 4 and May 8.
Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In many European languages, the words for "Easter" and "Passover" are etymologically related or homonymous.[4] The term "Pascha", from the same root, is also used in English to refer to Easter.
Easter customs vary across the Christian world, but decorating Easter eggs is a common motif. In the Western world, customs such as egg hunting and the Easter Bunny extend from the domain of church, and often have a secular character.
The city of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerg, German: Luxemburg), also known as Luxembourg City (Luxembourgish: Stad Lëtzebuerg, French: Ville de Luxembourg, German: Luxemburg Stadt), is a commune with city status, and the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is located at the confluence of the Alzette and Pétrusse Rivers in southern Luxembourg. The city contains the historic Luxembourg Castle, established by the Franks in the Early Middle Ages, around which a settlement developed.
Luxembourg City lies at the heart of Western Europe, situated 213 km (132 mi) by road from Brussels, 372 km (231 mi) from Paris, 209 km (130 mi) from Cologne, and 65 km (40 mi) from Metz in northeast France.[1]
In 2009, Luxembourg was ranked as having the third highest GDP - per capita at $79,600 (US Dollars)[2] with the city having developed into a banking and administrative centre. It is a seat of several institutions of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, and the European Investment Bank.
The Aspang station in National Socialism
In contrast to Germany, where the Jewish population was deported from several cities, the central location for the deportations of the Jewish population of Vienna and Austria was Vienna's Aspang railway station in the 3rd district. In the course of the deportations, which departed from Vienna between February 1941 and October 1942, the majority of the Jewish population was deported from there to ghettos and extermination camps in the east. The station, which is a bit off the main train stations or main railway lines and therefore less frequented, was probably chosen deliberately for this purpose. At the same time, however, the station was located in the middle of the city, so that the sometimes weekly deportation of about a thousand Jews was not unnoticed, but followed before the eyes of the population. Between 1939 and 1945, a total of 48,953 Jews were deported from Vienna, 47,035 of them in 47 transports from Vienna's Aspangbahnhof.
Deportations from the Aspang station - transports and number of victims
The first two transports handled at Aspang Station were those from October 20 and 26, 1939, to Nisko on the river San, with which 1,584 Jewish men were deported from Vienna, who had previously been interned in the Gänsbacher alley transit camp. The bulk of the Jewish population was deported with the 1941 spring deportations and the major deportations between October 1941 and October 1942 - a total of 45,451 women, men and children in 45 transports, with each transport between 900 and over 1000 people. Among them were not only Viennese, but also Jews from the federal states, who had been expelled to Vienna in 1938/39. Politically persecuted, stateless Jews and other non-Jewish groups of victims, however, were sent in the years 1938/39 mainly from Westbahnhof (Western Railway Station) to Dachau and Buchenwald, and later also to Mauthausen. The Nordbahnhof (Norther Railway Station) only served as a deportation station for smaller and individual transports after the completion of the major deportations from 1943 to the end of the war. In the years 1943-1945 a total of 1,918 Jews were deported.
According to the calculations of the historian Jonny Moser, only a total of 1,734 Jews survived the deportation to the ghettos and extermination camps. Of the 45,451 in the years 1941 and 1942 deported from the Aspang station, the majority was murdered, 989 people survived, including the via Theresienstadt to Auschwitz deported later writer Ruth Klüger.
Destinations of the deportation trains
The destinations of the deportations were the "Generalgouvernement (the German administered part of Poland during World War II)" (Nisko, Opole, Kielce, Modliborczicze, Łagów / Opatów and Izbica), Łódź (Warthegau), Riga (Latvia), Minsk with Maly Trostinec (Belarus), Theresienstadt/Terezin ("Protectorate") and Auschwitz (Upper Silesia). The train journey lasted between two days and one week. About half of all deportees from Vienna came to Theresienstadt (15,122 people) and Minsk / Maly Trostinec (9,471 people). From Theresienstadt around half of the Jews from the former Austria were sent on between August 1942 and October 1944 to Auschwitz and other places of extermination, such as Treblinka, and murdered, including the sisters of Sigmund Freud.
Roma and Sinti
Most of the Austrian Roma and Sinti were deported from train stations in Burgenland and Styria, partly directly from the Lackenbach detention camp. Some of the Roma and Sinti living in Vienna, including the family of Ceija Stojka (1933-2013), were also deported from Vienna in 1943. Since at this time the Aspang station was no longer used for deportation transports, it can be assumed that Roma and Sinti were not deported from there.
The Aspang station in the years 1945-2002
After the Second World War, the Aspang station was used by the British occupation as a station for supplies. The passenger operation was maintained until 1971. This year, the rapid-transit railway station Rennweg was opened. The station building was demolished in the summer of 1977. The historic railway line, however, continued to exist and was later used by the airport express train (S7) and as a freight yard. The railway area was still used until 2001 as a freight yard. In 2002, the entire railway system of the Aspang Railway was broken off and a tunnel was built for the airport rapid transit railway. Furthermore, a crossing-free link was created with the rapid transit main line. As a result, traffic usage disappeared underground and was also the prelude to a high-quality urban development of the entire Aspang area.
Memorial stone and planned memorial
A commemorative plaque erected in 1983 with the call "Never forget!" recalls the Jews deported in the years 1939-1942 from the former Aspang station. In 1995, the city of Vienna renamed the forecourt into Place of the Victims of the Deportation.
On the grounds of the former Aspang station, the new district of Eurogate is under construction. The Leon Zelman Park located there was named after the founder of the "Jewish Welcome Service". An educational campus with kindergarten and schools will be named after Aron Menczer (1917-1943), head of the Zionist Youth Aliyah. Aron Menczer was deported to Theresienstadt on 24 September 1942 with one of the last major transports and murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. A memorial for the victims of the deportation is to be erected on the site until the summer of 2017.
Opening of the Aspangbahnhof Memorial September 7, 2017
The memorial at the Aspangbahnhof was on 7 September 2017 in the presence of City Councilor Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, Municipal Councilor for Housing, Housing and Urban Renewal Michael Ludwig, the Ambassador of the State of Israel Talya Lador-Fresher, the President of the Jewish Community Oskar Deutsch, and numerous Personalities of political and cultural life and representatives of the Jewish community opened. The memorial is located in the Leon Zelman Park, Vienna 3, Aspang grounds. The memorial was designed by the artist group PRINDpod as part of the project KÖR Kunst in the public space Vienna, which lives since 1984 as a team in Vienna. It recalls the 47,035 Jews who were deported from the Aspang Station to the ghettos and extermination camps in 47 transports in the years 1939 and 1941/1942, of which only 1073 survived. One of these survivors, Herbert Schrott, born in 1926, spoke as a witness at the opening. The memorial "with two concrete rails converging conically over a length of about 30 meters points to the railway tracks" of the former station. These rails come together in a concrete block and end in this. In this way, the visualization of the journey to death should be symbolized.
September 2017

Emphasis on the 'problems' part. This is what you get when you make an attorney do math. I realized after I took this shot that my calculations looked a lot like the rantings of the crazy homeless guy from a few posts ago. Who knows, maybe once upon a time he was an attorney who was forced to work with numbers and it drove him stark, raving bonkers.
I spent a good chunk of yesterday afternoon and this morning reviewing the assets and liabilities of a married couple who own a government contracting company and winnowing through their tax returns to try and figure out how much of their collective income was attributable to each spouse. They had applied for certification as a disadvantaged business and I had to see if the program office's determination that the couple was not economically disadvantaged was legally supportable. Which meant I had to do math.
Math is not my friend. It was always my worst (and least favorite) subject in school. It's not a widely known fact, but most lawyers are terrible at anything involving numbers. We tend to react to numbers like Superman does to Kryptonite and vampires do to crosses. If we were good at math we wouldn't go to law school. We'd be doctors or scientists or engineers instead (or in my case, an architect), or something useful like that. But we suck at math so we wind up lawyers by default.
After a lengthy and awkward struggle (and a bit of cheating using the QuickMath automatic math solutions website -- man I love that website), I was finallly able to determine that the couple's adjusted net worth was below the $750,000 threshold but their average two-year incomes were in excess of $200,000, which put them in the upper percentiles of all U.S. taxpayers and therefore precluded them from being deemed economically disadvantaged.
Anyone who wasn't math illiterate probably could've figured that out in about 20 minutes, tops. Making an attorney do math is like giving a monkey a chainsaw -- it might turn out all right, but the odds are it's going to result in something messy and unpleasant.

Introduction :
Since substituting for complex raw ceramic materials involves calculation that many potters are not familiar with and since we have found a way to substitute for most of these we offer to the community of ceramists the results of our research.
This research project originated very spontaneously while calculating to substitute for spodumene by lithium carbonate, kaolin and silica. Our approach is for those who are not familiar with glaze chemistry or for those who do not own a computer. This research project was conducted between 1993 and 1995, before the popularization of computer glaze softwares and home personal computers. Even at the present time only 20% of Quebec households own a computer and only 6% of them have a link to Internet (1997).
After succeeding our first substitution for spodumene the results were sent to W. Hunt, editor with Ceramics Monthly, who really appreciated our method. His letter of May 19, 1993 was a real boost for us: “I appreciated you sending us this fascinating discussion on substituting for spodumene. With your permission, I’d like to use parts of this in our Letters column”. Then we decided to apply our method to the substitution for feldspars, felspathoids and other raw materials, as you will see later. The results were sent to W. Hunt on a slow basis, in a “chapter by chapter” like manner, as new hypotheses came to our mind. Then on March 17, 1994 he send his final comments on what we had sent thus far. The chapter on lepidolite was done after receiving his last letter but the same methodology was applied.
We used general formulas rather than complex analysis and carried 3 decimal places, rounding the fourth on the third. We used the notional oxide KNAO. We also used a few other personal tricks. Our goal was to obtain substitutions in which new unity formulas were the closest possible to the original ones, which we achieved on each occasion.
Since the formulas of feldspars and feldspar-like materials are somewhat similar to those of glazes we used this last principle to find adequate substitutions. The idea was to consider the complex materials to be substituted for as glazebase unity formulas to be converted to batch recipes, then they were divided by 100 to be inserted easily in glaze recipes.
According to the method for glaze calculation: “Glaze calculation, theory and objectives”; “Glaze calculation using materials containing more than one oxide” and “Calculating glaze formulas from batches or recipes” (Daniel Rhodes, Clay and glazes for the potter, revised edition, 1973) we used different materials to achieve our goal which was to make a mixture having, once fired, the formula of feldspars and feldspar-like materials.
Naturally some minor adjustments had to be made, by the method of trials and errors (on a mathematical basis), to the results of the first try (first substitution) to obtain a satisfactory fit. Then when necessary and/or possible, the results of the second try (second substitution) were tested a few more times in different recipes to eliminate possible good results due solely to chance.
Finally we applied our method to materials far less complex than feldspars and feldspar-like materials.
Sincerely
Edouard Bastarache

Dear Mr. Bastarache:
We are truly amazed at all these submissions that you have sent concerning ceramic materials substitutions. I can’t think of the last time someone sent us this much data – enough for a substantial book. These texts go beyond anything we could publish in Ceramics Monthly, so I’m wondering if you’d allow us to post these in our research library where the staff or other potters visiting the library would have access to your research. Of course, if you would rather us return this material to you we would, should you request it.
I thank you for thinking of us with all your detailed and thoughtful research; I look forward to hearing from you further as to its disposition.
Sincerely,

Thank you so much for sending the books with Michel. They are
amazingly thorough and fill an important void in my library. As both
potter and educator very concerned with the use of materials it is
great to have them. I have known about them for some years, but, as I
will soon be slowing down on the teaching end of things, hadn't got
around to getting them. When Michel was coming for a visit and
sometimes works in your studio, it seemed like an ideal time to add
them to my library.
Much appreciated, thank you.

Invaluable resource
I have to admit, when I bought this book, part of my reasons were to
support an online friend and fellow clayarter, by adding his book to my
collection. It was very pleasant to receive the book and realize what a
wonderful addition to my clay book library it is! I wanted to share my
reactions by sending my review.
Being a potter who mixes glazes from scratch, I sometimes will go to make
up a recipe and realize that I'm missing one of the ingredients or don't
have quite enough. This book is an invaluable resource for such a
situation where quick re-stocking of chemicals is not always an option.
The book is arranged by chemical being substituted for, with variations in
the ingredients used as replacement. Monsieur Bastarache has generously
shared many recipes, showing a sample substitution for each variation.
Potters are known for sharing glaze recipes and in this age of electronic
communication, many recipes are being shared online far and wide around the
world. Some of the glaze ingredients are not available in all parts of the
world, without exhaustive shipping costs. With this book as resource,
potters in areas where some chemicals aren't common can easily substitute
and get similar results on their clay pieces.
The book is spiral bound with a good quality cover for convenience and ease
of use in the studio. I would like to commend Edouard for creating this wonderful
reference.

A tribute by a friend
Dear Édouard,
Most sincere congratulations for the realization of your book. It is really the results of a maniac of research, a mad one about ceramics like there is no one else in Quebec. I have read with pleasure your new book and it was for me a return on my past as a technologist of ceramics. I am thus happy to share your joy of this publication, that will incite ceramists who prepare their glazes, to launch out towards creative adventures of new shades and colors. As for the cover of your book, accept my congratulations because it is a very beautiful.

Options. Isn't that what it's all about?
If you're a potter who mixes glazes from scratch, realizing that you're missing one of the ingredients or don't have quite enough can be an inconvenience. Substitutions for Raw Ceramic Materials is an invaluable resource for this situation when quick re-stocking of chemicals is not a timely choice.
The book is arranged by chemical, with variations of the ingredients used as a replacement. The author has generously shared many glaze recipes, showing a sample substitution for each variation.
As a rule, potters are known for sharing glaze recipes. With the use of the internet, many recipes are being shared online around the globe. As you can imagine, some of the glaze ingredients are not available in all parts of the world and without exhaustive shipping costs. With Edouard's book as resource, potters can easily substitute other chemicals and produce similar results.
The book is spiral bound with a good quality cover for convenience and ease of use in the studio.

Tour de force
Edouard Bastarache's book « Substitutions for Raw Ceramic Materials » is a 'tour de force' of substitutions of particular ceramic materials with others. The book is the result of a research project undertaken between 1993 and 1995 before computer glazing programs became widely available and is targeted to those ceramic artists and potters who don't have computer access to help them with otherwise complex calculations in materials substitutions.
This is a comprehensive publication on glaze materials substitutions and includes 10 chapters filled with glaze recipies using the sustitution method. Both the original and substituted recipies are provided. Materials substituted include Spodumene, Petalite, Lepidolite, Potash Feldspars, Cornish Stone, Sodium/Calcium Spars (Kona F-4), Potassium/CalciumSpars (G-200) , Plastic Vitrox, Volcanic Ash, Dolomite, Wollastonite, Pryophyllite and Talc. Three hundred pages contain several hundred glazes. In a typical glaze materials substitution, Custer Feldspar might be substituted by Nephelene Syenite and Silica, or Spodumene by Lithium Carbonate, Silica and Kaolin, etc.
Edouard Bastarache lives in Quebec, Canada, and has a colorful history. He studied surgery, internal medicine and neuroendecrine physiology and has been a consultant in occupational and environmental medicine for 25 years. At the same time as his medical studies, he studied ceramics under Julien Cloutier at La Boutique d'Argile (The Clay Shop) and later also taught at the same school. Bastarache now lives in the Sorel-Tracy region of Quebec, near the St. Lawrence river. He uses waste materials from steel plants located in the area to color many of his glazes and clays. He fires most of his work to cone 9 1/2 in reduction in a 60 cubic foot downdraft gas kiln.
His book Substitutions for Raw Ceramic Materials is the result of a total of 38 years dabbling in ceramics and a 3 year research project.

Hello Édouard,
The more I learn about the world of potters, the more I think that your idea to write a book on raw materials substitutions is brilliant. None or only a few potters calculate or convert mineral chemical formulas. It must annoy them to calculate, or then they do not know how.

"MS Cap San Diego is a general cargo ship, situated as a museum ship in Hamburg, Germany. Notable for its elegant silhouette, it was the last of a series of six ships known as the white swans of the south atlantic, and marked the apex of German-built general cargo ships before the advent of the container ship and the decline of Germany's heavy industry.
The Cap San Diego was built and launched by Deutsche Werft in 1961 for Hamburg Süd as the last of a series of six ships. The 159 m, 10000 dwt ship ran a regular schedule between Germany and South America, completing 120 round trips until 1981. After being sold and running under different names and flags of convenience as a tramp trader, the run-down ship was scheduled for scrapping in 1986, when it was bought by the city of Hamburg."

Simulation of water ripple. It would be useful to hide the tripod and stitch failure.
In the calculation, I put a virtual nadir plain and a virtual zenith plain. Zenith plain contacts with the projection sphere at the zenith, while the distance from center of sphere to nadir plain is variable. In this picture nadir plain is placed just below the center of the sphere. Then upper hemisphere is projected onto the zenith plain and the reflection in the nadir plain is calculated. In the calculation, i put a periodic perturbation to the reflection angle, which produces the ripple. Reflection image is cut in appropriate shape in Photoshop and translucently merged with the original equirectangular image.
See in Immersive viewer how it works.
The pixel at latitude θ' North is projected to θ South in reflection image by the following formula:
L/tan(θ) + (1+L)/tan(θ+δ) = 1/tan θ',
where L is the distance from center of sphere to nadir plain. δ is the perturbation angle and I defined as δ=A sin 2πNx, where x=L/tanθ.
Such a post-processing is possible because orientational information is conserved in equirectangular image. Even in regular retilinear shot, it will be possible if lens FOV is known.
The program is written in C, but it will be easy to be written in mathmap.
I'm back to the world of the living! At least for the time being, until my next exam. By my complex trigonometric calculation, I've got three weeks until the clock resets, and anxiety settles back in before my CSET exams.
But let's talk present tense. If you haven't noticed, I'm posting this installment of my 52-week project late in the week, At the end of the week, in fact. Cutting it close.
Now past tense; This past Thursday I had my CBEST examination, so the days leading up to the exam were spent taking care of easy loads of consistent studying. The day of the exam was very stressful due to reasons out of my hands -the exam conductors computers were having technical difficulties, and my exam was nearly cancelled. With some persistence, patience, and two hours of waiting time, things pulled though. I took the exam as planned, somewhat. At least I did not need to reschedule for another day as some others did.
I definitively passed two out of three sections of the exam -my results were provided to me upon completion of the exam. The remaining third section has been submitted to a committee for review and scoring. This scoring will take about two to three weeks, after which time I will receive my score by mail. A great way to start the test taking spree I am on!
Now future tense. This entire month has been amazing, and the upcoming month of May will only prove to be exponentially more amazing. Trust me, while these two months will prove to be months of progress [hopefully], they will also be months of change ... and believe you me, May has got it going on. Stay tuned for updates on that!
I remember a high school teacher once telling me that everything changes, except for change itself. Periodically, I do find myself having a hard time dealing with change. Dealing with cumbersome re-acclimation to new circumstances. I really do my best to accept it though -partially because more times than not, there is nothing we can do about change. When it comes, sometimes we are forewarned, other times it sneaks up on us. And when change occurs, we're forced to either stay stuck in our ways and fail and stress, or adapt and learn to lean in to the turns. I continually insist on the latter option.
It's been a while since I've been able to get out and shoot, and practice some strobist work! This photo was taken at an abandoned postal station. I'd imagine this place serves as a shelter for homeless persons at times, or a smoking spot for cannabis friendly people; this place had a very grimy feel to it. But today, this place served as the site for my self portrait.
The only thing that makes me sad right now is that some gusts of wind blew over both of my light stands, and broke both of my umbrellas :( They're still usable, but by the looks of them their lifespan has been significantly reduced. But on the upside, I should be happy that none of my speedlites were damaged.

The paper illustrates the computational capability of the collisional-radiative model ATMED CR for calculating the temporal evolution of accurate atomic populations including nlj-splitting, mean charge and atomic processes rates. The present work contains computed time-dependent plasmas with the average atom code ATMED CR of neon and aluminium created with X-ray Free Electron Lasers proposed in the 10th Non-LTE Code Comparison Workshop. The results for plasma properties can be considered as very precise, according to the electronic temperature profiles registered in experiments of laser-created plasmas with duration times of picoseconds and femtoseconds. As a consequence, the Crank-Nicholson implicit numerical iterative temporal module of ATMED CR can be considered a new rapid method for simulating this type of plasmas, avoiding some of the typical difficulties that appear in interpreting results of free electron laser experiments, as very different temporal scales in NLTE regime, enormous matrices of detailed collisional radiative codes, etc. In this paper, it is also presented a representative sample of steady state iron plasmas focusing the attention on two issues. First, the huge computation capability extension up to millions of plasmas with the implementation of a collisional radiative balance in the relativistic average atom model ATMED. Second, it will be addressed the good agreement of atomic and radiative properties not only with respect to very recent experimental measurements of laboratories and High Energy Density facilities, but also to the last theoretical developments in quantum mechanics of statistical methods, as new codes based on the self consistent Hartree-Fock-Slater model for the average atom which in turn solve the Schrödinger’s or Dirac’s equations of radial wave functions. The new codes have been validated with some state of the art models as OPAL, SCO-RCG, STA, CASSANDRA, LEDCOP, THERMOS, etc. The results for plasma properties can be considered as relatively precise and optimal, being checked fundamentally the high sensitivity of calculations to changes in regime, local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) or non-LTE (NLTE), electronic and radiation temperatures, dilution factor, matter or electronic density and plasma length. The systematic theoretical investigation is carried out through comparison of calculations performed with a wide set of atomic collisional radiative codes with detailed configurations or codes of the average atom formalism. Some transmissions computed with ATMED CR using UTA (Unresolved Transition Array) formalism are also checked with respect to very recent experimental measurements of laboratories.

I missed the first of the trio of Good Idea/Bad Idea Animaniacs parody shows presented this August by the Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque - I had a prior commitment that kept me away from the Upper West Side that night.
I saw the show the first time around, last winter, but I've spent so much time in the Gorillas' company these past months that it felt weird not being there to watch them perform.
Anyway, I'm present for the second of the three, and the show has grown even better over the intervening time: there are some cast changes, some reconsiderations, a couple of new skits, and more confidence all around. And it's good to be back in my regular seat, camera in hand.
Here Gemma Stone, as The Brain of Pinky and the Brain, makes her devious calculations in a daring plot to - yes, say it with me now - Take Over The World. Hilarity and burlesque ensue.
This photo is upside down. This is how Gaudi figured out how to design La Sagrada Familia, by hanging lead weights by string to create perfect curves for the supports.
Wikipedia:
Gaudí spent ten years working on studies for the design of La Sagrada Família and developing a new method of structural calculation based on a model built with cords and small sacks of lead shot. The outline of the church was traced on a wooden board (1:10 scale), which was then placed on the ceiling of a small house next to the work site. Cords were hung from the points where columns were to be placed. The sacks of pellets, weighing one ten-thousandth part of the weight the arches would to support, were hung from each catenaric arch formed by the cords. Photographs were then taken of the resulting model from various angles. When the photographs were turned upside-down, the lines of tension formed by the cords and weights revealed the lines of pressure of the compressed structure. This is one of the ways that Gaudí obtained natural forms in his work.
The same expressive power of Gaudí's monumental works exists in his oddly graceful chairs and tables. Gaudí's architecture is a total integration of materials, processes and poetics. His approach to furniture design exceeded structural expression and continued with the overall architectural idea.[20]
This is a photograph from the 4th and final round of the 2015 Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 27th May 2015 at 20:00. The weather was perfect for running and racing again and gave bright sunshine with some breeze. The weather conditions were favourable for runners this evening. As this was the final night of a very successful league there were many category prizes up for grabs with runners having to ensure they ran their races to gain the required finish times for the overall calculations. There was a great atmosphere at the finish as spectators cheered on the runners. This year's 5KM is ran on a modified route based on the route from the last couple of years. The final 1KM is within the Belvedere Gardens bringing runners down to the lakeside for a second time and finishing along the aptly named Stream Of Life. The route modification means that the race offers a slightly faster route than the hill finish of previous years. In the prize giving and awards in Belvedere House Cafe there were refreshments served for runners and this brought the curtain down on the Road League for 2015.
The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Runners can also choose to just run one race without being considered for the overall league placings. Over 330 people took part in tonight's event bring the total from the four nights to so far to well over 1,400 runners. As with all of the previous weeks the new finish area provided a nice space for runners to stay around and chat in the evening sunshine. The Mullingar Road League 2015 is now over but has continued successfully and looks to add to the success in the history of this great series. Despite the bright evenings the photographic conditions in Belevedere are difficult so this photograph is part of a smaller than usual photograph set as there were many blurred photographs this evening.
The "Road League" is something of a misnomer but is an indication of the League's origins on the roads around Ladestown Mullingar prior to it's move into Belvedere in 2008. The Road League is the envy of many other races in the country as the Belvedere locations offers a completely traffic free 5KM route.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
