Megacam Baffle Internals - Rendered by Tom Benedict

This is the largest lens hood I ever designed and built. It's the baffle for the Megacam Wide Field Corrector. It's shown here without its skin so the internal structure is visible.

The baffle is 49" (1.25m) in diameter by 59" (1.5m) tall. I designed it back when all I used was 2D CAD. I've shown the original assembly drawing suspended in the middle of the 3D CAD model I made off of the 2D shop drawings in preparation for my next project.

The lens this whole thing attaches to is the same one we stripped the damaged coating off of about a month ago. It's visible in the 2D drawing as the cross-hatched curved white thing near the narrow end of the baffle.

More recently I've been asked to make (drum roll) the largest lens cap I've ever made! It has to fit over the open end of the baffle. The outer ring at the open end is only 1.6mm thick - far too flimsy to hang an entire lens cap from. So I need to grab it by the internal rig, which is a hefty 6.35mm thick.

One of the design constraints I had when I built this was that it couldn't weigh in over 50kg. I barely hit that number once the paint was applied. For the KAPers out there, the individual baffle rings are made out of the same material and thickness as the typical Brooxes components, though these are painted rather than anodized. The vertical stringers are 3.12mm aluminum.

The whole thing is wrapped in an aluminum skin that was cinched up tight and bolted to the upper and lower rings. It's basically a big monocoque structure. Without the outer skin it's as flimsy as it looks. With it it's tough enough to withstand 75MPH wind loads without deformation.

The internal baffle structure was designed so that no point on the first lens of the wide field corrector could see any spot inside the baffle that was directly illuminated from outside, except at the ID edges of the baffle plates. It was a really fun CAD problem, and was my first real design effort at CFHT.

My studio has been so busy lately with casting, machining and 3D printing that I haven't had much time to update the build thread of this project.

Let me update you all on the progress of the Lunar Module:

I've been slowly chipping away on all the rivet detailing, as well as cleanup. Here you can see the hatch aperture being milled to the correct depth just before the forward hull was moulded for a second time- as previously stated, this is so that I can capture all the texture and detail without the fragility of the techniques I used to get that effect.

The photo featured of the silicone mould (in pale green) is the mould directly after it had cured, so before any cleanup to remove debris left inside.

Since the latest cast from the new mould is just one of the prototypes, I wanted to see how the model looks with paint.

I used Halfords matt black spray paint, followed up with a custom mixture of Tamiya XF15 and XF20 (Flat Flesh and Medium Grey), then Alclad II Chrome for the metallic areas.

I then painted the rivets and tape detail with Tamiya X11 (Silver), before attaching gold thermal blanket using 3M 2mm double sided tape. I discovered that gluing the thermal blanket doesn't work at all, since any solvents dissolve the gold coating.

The descent stage (DS) has been laser cut from 3mm Perspex according to the dimensions laid out in my CAD model- 1mm half round styrene strips have then been added to accurately replicate the ribs and stringers. I chose to use half round rather than a more accurate square profile for ease of moulding.

The Sketchup model I've been working on concurrently with the physical build will be available to purchase as SKP and STL files when it's complete- as you can see, I have done my best to closely copy the LM interior according to reference photographs and NASA/Grumman documentation.

22/02/11 | Maestro Forró no desfile de lançamento da Grife do Carnaval do Recife by Carnaval do Recife

A moda também está presente no Carnaval Multicultural do Recife. Nesta terça-feira (22/02), a Prefeitura, por meio da Fundação de Cultura Cidade do Recife, lançou a Grife do Carnaval 2011, com um desfile no terraço do Paço Alfândega. O evento foi prestigiado pelo prefeito do Recife, João da Costa, pelo secretário de Cultura do Recife, Renato L, e pela presidente da Fundação de Cultura do Recife, Luciana Félix.

Com criação da designer e artista plástica Bete Paes, a partir das ilustrações de Joana Lira, a grife trará sete estampas concebidas com os elementos icônicos presentes na obra da artista Tereza Costa Rêgo, homenageada do Carnaval Multicultural 2011, ao lado do Maestro Duda, e quatro estampas com base nas cores e padrões que demarcam a cara do nosso Carnaval.

A coleção reúne camisas básicas femininas, camisetas masculinas, regatas femininas, vestidos, bermudas, leggings e bolsas. A novidade do Carnaval 2011 é uma linha infantil. Cada modelo estará disponível em três cores.

As peças serão comercializadas nas lojas Dona Santa/Santo Homem, Ellus, Duass, Vulgo e Avesso.
