These are interesting little guys. Once the buds truly open up the little flowers stay during the day and then close around 6 in the evening. Almost the opposite schedule of my four o'clocks.
It was raining in the Anza-Borrego desert when I took this photo during a workshop with Ron Niebrugge. The rain brought our the red color of the spines.

Death Valley National Park is located in Eastern California along the Nevada border. It is a land of contrasts, ranging from Telescope Peak at 11,049 feet, to Badwater Basin at 282 feet below sea level. It is one of the hottest and driest places on earth, registering the hottest day recorded anywhere on earth at 134 degrees F.
