We currently do not have any cactus in bloom so I went back to the archives for this picture. Photographed before sun rise, and within an hour after the sun had risen the flower was almost full closed.
Lighting stuff: Lit with one Yongnuo manual flash in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box mounted on a light stand at camera left.
Other plants, flowers, fruit or thingys that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. For each image in the set, and there are over 1900 of them, I describe how I set up the lighting for that particular shot. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/

One unexpected advantage of visiting the Bolsa Chica wetlands for birdwatching has been the abundance of flowers along the trails. I've noticed that various plants bloom in the wetlands almost every month. Earlier this spring, during a morning walk, I came across a cactus in bloom, which, to be honest, I had never seen despite many trips to the desert.
One of the first photos I took with my new phone. Nice close-up details--check.

So many things in bloom! I hope to finish editing the photos I took within the next decade!
Anzo Borrego State Park, Ca. April, 2023.
I really couldn't make out in my lcd whether this was sharp or not maybe because of the small area of clarity caused by my proximity as well as the f 4 setting as well as the tiny size of the needles. It looked better on my Mac.
Have another Christmas Cactus in bloom. The colour of this one is different in that it has yellow/gold petals. Will try to get a few different shots before the blooms start to fade.

These very pink flowers were in bloom on a barrel cactus in the canyon near my parents' home. What a contrast with the surrounding desert color palette.

The desert outside of Tucson was crazy with cactus in bloom during the middle two weeks of April--it was quite a sight. Copyright 2007 Jeff Wignall. Earlier in the year, I bought an unbadged 9x12 camera with a very bright Zeiss Tessar lens. It is old (90-100 years, I suspect), clunky, unwieldy, laborious, and entirely fascinating, and have been waiting for the opportunity to experiment and share one its results.
Here, then, is my first successful photograph with it, 'scanned', pro tem., with my iPhone as it was still drying.

Hi there!
Friday's Flower is a Prickly Pear captured in Arizona, 2015. I liked the warm tones of this bloom and hope you do too!
I began my album, Friday's Flower, to help me keep focused (at least somewhat) on my over- abundance of images. It is amazing how they get out of control, all on their own!
Have a warm and wonderful day! I hope you fill up your cards on the weekend! Thanks for stopping by!
