AT THE ORCHID SHOW, THERE WERE MANY CACTUSES IN BLOOM. HERE IS ONE OF THEM. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO LAY LOW BECAUSE THE PLANTS ARE VERY SMALL ABOUT 4 INCHES TALL.

Hi there!

Friday's Flower is a Prickly Pear captured in Arizona, 2015. I liked the warm tones of this bloom and hope you do too!

I began my album, Friday's Flower, to help me keep focused (at least somewhat) on my over- abundance of images. It is amazing how they get out of control, all on their own!

Have a warm and wonderful day! I hope you fill up your cards on the weekend! Thanks for stopping by!

A cactus is a member of the plant family Cactaceae within the order Caryophyllales. The word "cactus" derives, through Latin, from the Ancient Greek κάκτος, kaktos, a name originally used by Theophrastus ...

I'm still home sick with a horrible cold and for two days, I haven't had the energy to do much more than listen to a marathon of I Love Lucy reruns, eat chicken soup with hot chilis and "play" on the computer. Once I was Lucy'd out around noon today, my next move was to run the entire LOTR trilogy (extended editions).

But while Frodo and Sam headed off to Mt. Doom, I figured I should try to be a little productive. Thus, I've set up yet another group on Flickr, this one devoted to our California Desert (Wildflowers & Wildlife). And of course, having a new group to admin means another fun mosaic. Whoo hoo! As with the other groups, membership is by invitation only, but as long as you're an active member of Flickr with quality images, you're welcome to join.

This group covers a large area of California's desert landscape, from our borders with Mexico and Arizona on the south and east, to the Mojave desert and edge of the Eastern Sierra on the north and Antelope Valley on the west. Among other locations, it includes Death Valley, Anza-Borrego State Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Red Rock Canyon State Park, Jawbone Canyon, Desert Tortoise Natural Area, Corn Springs / Chuckwalla Mountains, Providence Mountains and the Mojave National Preserve.

I'm also including the area at the very southern end of the Owens Valley south of Lone Pine (Olancha, Keeler, Cerro Gordo, Haiwee, Fossil Falls) because of its desert-like climate. I might be convinced to include the Alabama Hills, although I'm not sure at this point since it's really part of the Great Basin and covered under the Eastern Sierra Wildflowers group. (Let me know your thoughts on this as I'm willing to be flexible. In the meanwhile, the Alabama Hills are NOT included.)

Hope you'll consider joining this group as it should be a good resource for desert wildflower and wildlife sightings as well as a place to coordinate meetups, if desired. I'm also willing to lead wildflower tours in some of these areas if there's interest.

Wishing us peace and good health..

My Christmas cactus in bloom still...sitting on a doily my maternal grandmother...Jean Annie Gillson , made long ago. She lived from 1881 until 1951......dying exactly on her seventieth birthday...having warned me a few months beforehand...she believed in the biblical "Three score years and ten"..... the allotted lifespan.!

I don't believe that ...it is certainly not true in my case!

And Canada will celebrate its 150th birthday this year, on July 1. Our local community choir will represent the province of Ontario in the celebrations in Ottawa...along with other choirs, one from each province. We are all looking forward to that, as a highlight of the year.

Imagine my surprise when I went outside tonight and went to the edge of the hill and saw all the cactus in bloom. Apparently, this has been going on for sometime as there are dead blooms hanging off the cactus too. Cactus make the prettiest flowers. I once saw a Nat Geo program and they showed that bats love the night blooming cactus flowers. I guess they like the nectar in them.

On the trail to Emory Peak we passed these Claret Cup Hedgehog Cactus in bloom. I couldn't resist a quick shot with my iPhone.

I was taking a photo of a nice saguaro cactus in bloom. My husband saw "a bird" and suggested to him that he would look good on the saguaro. Within seconds, there he was. There were 5 arms, all blooming, on this very old saguaro and the Flicker went to each one providing a fantastic opportunity to get what I would consider a relatively rare photographic experience: Gilded Flicker on a blooming saguaro, taking his time to savor the goodness.

My wife bought this Easter Cactus from the store she works at very reasonable price,

It is very easy to propagate, came on a small pot loaded with blooms,,

across in the Kitchen our Christmas cactus also bloomed,

Have a beautiful weekend everyone.
