The Beavertail Cactus - Opuntia basilaris - is found in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts of southeastern California, southwestern Utah and western Arizona.

This beavertail cactus in bloom was found near Ocatillo Wells in Anza Borrego State Park.
This remarkable cactus appears to be a pile of rounded pebbles which magically are sprouting flowers!
I have been waiting for these to bloom for a few weeks now. I was afraid I'd already missed them while I was on vacation. Last year I was out at the Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve and they had already bloomed and I was too late. Common Prickly Pear, or Plains Cactus, Opuntia macrorhiza.
Jt is a very special place to me, this was one of the last times I was there this April. The Ocotillo were blooming - it was incredilbe.

Seen on the grounds of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA on May 31, 2013. It was lovely to see cactus in bloom!
Those thorns on this Thumb Cactus may be little, but they have a fish hook shaped barb that HURTS when it gets under your skin.
