This is an actual cabin that the original settlers used in the mid 1800's in southeastern Oklahoma. I guessed it's size at 9x9 feet (3x3 meters) square. Inside there was everything one needed for comfort; a dining table and a bunk bed.

Anywhere you see a cabin around here, you can bet that water is very close by. There is a small spring coming out of the rocks just to the right of the photo.

Daniel Boone's Last Home place in Kentucky in Nicholas county, near Carlisle, Kentucky, built in 1795 by Daniel Boone and his son, the family (Daniel, wife, 10 children) lived in this one room cabin before migrated to Missouri in 1799 where he would spend the remaining 20 years of his life.

Turner Hunt Clements, an early settler, built this log cabin in the 1820's. It originally stood on Georgia Highway 20, northeast of McDonough, and is one of the oldest buildings in Henry County. The last to live in this cabin were George and Shirley Kelley. Although extremely small by today's housing standards, this cabin was typical of what most farm families lived in during the nineteenth century. Families with ten children cooked, ate and slept in the one downstairs room and loft. We have to bear in mind, though, that back then people lived and worked outdoors most of the time. They rested on the porch outside and the children played outside almost all of the time.

It was only about 2 months ago, but I already forgot this empty symbol headed down the Cabin Creek. I still had an hour or two before the KNWA was ready to go east from Dickinson and thankfully the C&O side threw me a couple of bones.

With regards to composition, I was interested in the geometrical aspects -the large flat area of the foreground, the evenly-spaced cabins, the horizon line- and their rupture: the diagonal lines in the sky, the cabins of different colors.

I post-processed the picture with the darktable software. The most important operation was using the contrast equalizer: Starting from the "bloom" preset, I made the pebbles in the foreground shadowless, with very smooth and regular histograms. On the opposite, in the sky I started from the "clarity" preset and increased the contrast in the middle (but not on the sides, to keep smooth feeling).
