This "wigwag" crossing signal guards the BNSF Railway's Harbor Subdivision crossing of 49th Street in Vernon, California, just south of Los Angeles. LA was my last stop in the U.S. before spending the next twenty-one months in Asia. Steve Crise, a well-known photographer in the area, showed me some of his favorite places before taking me to the airport that night. Ten years later, this signal remains in service--unlike many of the railroad facilities I would see in China over the next three months.

Assignment: PCA72 – Hit Me with Your Best Shot - SOOC
Deadline: July 19th, 2009
Image Tag: pca72
From: mags_Tag (margherita)
Mission: SOOC stands for “straight out of camera”. Many of our assignments lately deal with manipulating our shots; cropping, burning, layering. This week’s assignment is to shoot and post a shot that you have NOT altered in ANY WAY. The subject matter is completely up to you but try to understand your camera and take the best shot the first time
It may sound like this week’s assignment is too easy but to take a really good photo with the right composition, light and exposure the first time is not. Let’s take a step back from all the high tech and try to shoot the best shot we can; one that we planned and created in the camera. No altering, cropping, darkening, sharpening or other manipulating allowed. So let your PP have a few days rest, get out there and shoot away, but as always, think before you pull that trigger.
WIT: Being in very dry conditions for the week and then getting to a body of water was a huge break for me. Twin Lakes, CA is a beautiful stop especially if you fish. I saw this tree that I wanted to be in the frame on one side or the other and I thought this was best. I really like the stark silver/whiteness of it and the way it popped off the water. I did have a polarizer on my lens and it most likely needed to be rotated a bit more the more I look at it. If I could change anything I might boost the color of the yellows for detail below, possibly straighten and not shoot in the middle of the day but I was on my break. Very happy with this SOOC shot.
Postcard is NOT for trade.
Prehistoric Rock Art, California.
Throughout California's mountains and valleys, unknown Native American artists left behind a vast legacy of rock art. Much of the true meaning of these fascinating symbols still remains a mystery.
At just under 9,800 feet elevation, these small alpine lakes stay cool even on hot (100 degree) days and a great place to have a picnic lunch and go for a hike. The wind was blowing at 30+ mph and made the lunch and hike a little more difficult but a good day none the less. Virginia Lakes road is located about half way between Lee Vining and Bridgeport, CA at Conway Summit, an easy car climb to the lakes and a good road.
