In 1975 when excavations were carried out, the foundations of a 12th century church were found, though the current building dates largely from the 14th and 15th centuries, the nave and chancel being the oldest. The building is in the Perpendicular style and, as usual, the structure has been restored on several occasions. It was reseated in 1846, and again in 1877. The church contains a mural monument to Colonel Richard Nicolls, of Ampthill House, killed during the engagement between the fleets of England and Holland on May 28th, 1672. The cannonball that killed him is incorporated in the marble of his monument. It was Richard Nicolls who took over New Amsterdam from the Dutch in 1664, subsequently renaming it New York after his patron the Duke of York. Another unique feature of this church is a marble pillar, claimed to be of ancient Roman origin, in memory of the Earl of Upper Ossory. There is also a brass to Sir Nicholas Hervey, one of the knights of the Field of the Cloth of Gold, and in the suite of Katherine of Arragon when she resided at Ampthill Castle.¹
