Conrail on C&NW! Not quite. Although this former New York Central GP40 still wears the color of Big Blue, it has recently been acquired by the C&NW. It is seen at M19A being power washed in preparation for repainting at Cal Avenue Coach Yard, in October 1981. Conrail No. 3014 will become C&NW No. 5504. Note the Oak Creek hoppers in the background on the main through 40th Street Yard.

c/n A-156 - built in 1942/1946
CWHM obtained this airplane from a private donor in 1982 after it had flown for many years on commercial and private ventures around the world. Manufactured as a Model D-18C in 1942, this Expeditor was converted to a Model E-18S in 1946, when Pratt & Whitney engines replaced the original Continentals. The paint scheme and markings are of a photographic section of the RCAF circa 1944, which was based at Winnipeg and attached to 403 Squadron.
One of the finest Model 18's around worldwide - CWHM won a number of airshow-prizes with this aircraft

Every year the San Diego Epiphyllum Society has a show on Mother's Day in Balboa Park. My wife grows these "cactus flowers" so every year we try to attend the show. This particular flower won a prize and the variety is called C'est Magnifique.
My wife was in the role of voice activated lightstand and she held the Yongnuo strobe in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box above the flower at camera right. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. I used camera settings that caused the background to go quite dark so that my strobe lit flower would stand out.
Over the years, I've taken quite a few "Epi" pictures, and they're in my Epiphyllum Flowers album, if you like that sort of thing.

I've photographed a lot of plants and flowers, because they're all around us, work cheap, and never complain. I have an album of these images with over 800 pictures, and for each one, I have described how I lit them, in case you're interested in that kind of thing.

Vitamin C is amazing stuff. It just generates the most colorful patterns.
These pictures are the first time I tried messing with the growth. To sped up the evaporation of the solvent (water) I'm using a hot plate set at about 70C. At one point I took the partially crystallized slide off the plate to look at it under the microscope. The crystals continued to grow (fantastic to watch) but they got bigger.
I decided to manipulate the patterns by pulling the slide on and off the hot plate. So the bigger crystals are hot grown and the smaller room temperature.
Cheers.
