A year ago, on May 31st, I witnessed the beautiful Campo Colorado Tornado. The view I had however, was the backlit side of the twister. Most everyone else on the chase was on the other side of the funnel and witnessed it as a white tornado with a beautiful blue sky behind it.
I was still miles away when I shot this at 200mm. I was jumping up and down in excitement because I figured with only five days to chase, and this being my next to last day out, that I wouldn't see anything more than a severe storm. I have to thank my friend Andy Hoeland who prodded me to keep chasing when I was sure the storm would be over by the time I reached it. Both he and Blake Knapp are to be thanked for the success I had on this day.

A series of storms came up on several days ion early June 2016 over the Rhein-Main region. Here are some impressions of the force of nature.
The Campo Colorado Tornado crosses over to Boise City, Oklahoma and drops it's second and last twister of the day.

This is a gust front that has red clay based dirt being pushed past it by the outflow from behind the storm.
This thing was wicked to watch, and soon after we watched this scene unfold, my friends and I were in the middle of a windstorm with gusts between 60-70 mph, made of 92 degrees warm air. What a rush!
I only had two days on the chase this year, but this storm really delivered in several ways and made it all worth it despite my having to come home early.
I'll confess, we were chanting "Boom Shakalaka, Boom Shakalaka!!!" in hopes of making the storm turn tornadic… lots of chanting… didn't work here, instead a tornado formed 40 miles north. Figures.
