an empty empty Moreton Bay Bug shell left amongst the rocks. No doubt thrown there by a human predator.
Highlight from my interview today:
Them: What are your feelings on spaces vs tabs for indenting code?
Me: I'm sorry, I was under the impression that you're not allowed to ask questions about an applicant's religious views.
(Got a laugh)
I went for a little walk to take pictures and decompress from interview stress. Some dude saw me taking pictures of an intriguing bit of homeless-encampment engineering and tried to press me to send him pictures to help him get rid of homeless people. Ugh.
I got my kids interested in collecting bugs. They already had the bug catching part down cold. I just introduced pins, foam boards and killing jars to the equation.
One cool thing we've learned is that insects can survive for a pretty long time inside a sealed jar. Hence the need for nail polish remover and the like.
One of the older insect eggs that our boys found hatched, and they're growing fast in our simple "terrarium". The exact species will be found out only when they become adults. Some species of "stink bugs", probably.

Bed Bugs are those creepy looking creatures who crawl over the bed and feed on human blood or animal blood. And I suppose they are pretty hard to kill unless and until you aren't using any effective Bed Bug removal products or treatment. goo.gl/gZI6Lf

I believe this to be the leaf-footed bug. Its classification is within the family of Coreidae and more specifically, it is within the species Acanthocephala declivis. This name translates from Greek meaning ‘sloping thorn head’. This bug was found on February 23, basking in the sun outside of the Village apartments at UNCW. This bug demonstrates the concepts of Intrasexual selection. The males will fight competing males by delivering a powerful squeeze in order to deter them from mates or food. The length of the back femur and its largest tooth are proportional to its body size. A larger A. declavis would have larger femur and tooth compared to a smaller one. The female femur and tooth ratio has not been studied, but it is assumed that they play a role in the female-female battles and that the scaling is also increased with size. However, it was found that the females use these hind legs as warning display and as a visual signal for other A. declavis. Stink Bug Hell by Shane K Smith
Stink Bugs or Pentatomidae are infesting Winston-Salem and Lexington, NC farm area homes. They come every year around Halloween. They are hard to kill with Pesticides. I’ve tried foggers but they barely work. They fly sort of stupidly and crash but hide well under clothes, in clothes on window sills near light. They can swim and dive under water as I have tried to flush them. They come back out of the toilet hole after being flushed! They do the backstroke no joke! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmvojex1v-I
They leave a sweet nasty smell that keeps attracting more. If you catch them with a Kleenex then drop them in a torture device made from a two liter bottle you have your best luck. Wear surgical gloves or a Kleenex so the smell doesn’t get on your fingers. They don’t just fly in the bottle. You have to use the bottle sometimes to physically move them to fall through the hole. Just cut the top off of a 1 or 2 liter bottle then turn it upside down inside of itself. The bugs fall in the hole. I also use vacuum cleaners. What you do with them after that is your own choice. The Hindus will send me to hell for killing these bugs. Maybe I will see the stink bugs there! I have let my share of insects fly or crawl free. But I am not sharing my house with these imports! The traps we bough from the store are empty because they don’t work. Coming soon Stink Bug Hell the movie.

Not sure what type the black one is that appears to be attacking the brown plant bug underneath. Think the brown one is the same one as it previous photos (Harpocera thoracica). This one shook around a bit as if trying to throw the dark one off. 2 more photos in comments

Two tiny woundwort shield bugs (Eysarcoris venustissimus) mating on bracken, one of several mating pairs here. The food plants of the larvae are hedge woundwort and white dead-nettle, so it was no surprise to note that the nuptials were taking place above a hedge woundwort.
