Edinburgh Zoo has four buff-cheeked gibbons. We have two females: Lucy, who was born in November 1996, and her daughter Lea, who was born in January 2003. They both came to us in September 2004 from London Zoo. They were soon joined by an adult male, Jon, who was born May 2000. He arrived from Ljubljana Zoo, Yugoslavia in February 2005. Lucy and Jon became proud parents to a healthy son, called Cheeky, in February 2006, and another baby was born 2 May 2010. As of June 2010, the baby has not yet been sexed

Bombus terrestris, the buff-tailed bumblebee or large earth bumblebee is one of the most numerous bumblebee species in Europe. The queen is 2–2.7 cm long, while the workers are 1½–2 cm. The latter are characterized by their white-ended abdomens and look (apart from their yellowish bands being darker in direct comparison) just like those of the white-tailed bumblebee, B. lucorum, a close relative. The queens of B. terrestris have the namesake buff-white abdomen ("tail") tip; this area is white like in the workers in B. lucorum.

Such bees can navigate their way back to the nest from a distance as far away as 13 kilometres (8.1 mi), although most forage within 5 km from their nest.

10-3-12, Hull: First Bee in my garden this year, and a beauty a good inch or so long. I wonder if it might be a Buff-Tailed Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris)? Hoping to get some help with the identification

11-3-12: Had one offer of Buff-tailed which is what I thought - quite reassuring that.

Not great quality, it was extremely dark when I took this photo, but it was the only time I saw a male of this species during my brief stay at this lodge.

They try to buff it out... but fail.

'Buff Cochin' is, as the title suggests, a portrait of a Buff Cochin, a lively and fluffy hen. I've always thought that chickens are under-appreciated. While most people think of hens and roosters simply as food or farm-country livestock, I see them as complex and fascinating creatures. Hens are gorgeous, definitely one of the most exotic and fanciful birds in the animal kingdom; not only in appearance, but equally in personality.
