Buff-tip moth

Phalera bucephala

Garden, Thorpe Bay, Essex

Eilema depressa (Arctiinae: Lithosiini), ♂ from Germany.

National Moth Week has just started but I have not caught any moth today. So I thought posting a footman (Lithosiinae: Eilema spp.) from my photo pool. Eilema species are grouped in flat-winged and rolled-winged species for easier identification. This Buff Footman (E. depressa) belongs to the first group since it has flat upper wings – still the lower wings are neatly pleated to be fully covered by the upper wings.

Made a promise to some folks that I'd post some images of Kodak Portra 400 grossly underexposed @ ISO 6400. What better place to go to do such a thing than @ Macs Diner? I'd already shot the place up at ISO 3200, what would a little more pushing do? One quick thing about pushing, when you push film, especially this hard, highlights get blown, midtones become shadows, and everything else is a muddy mess. The black levels slider quickly becomes your friend in post-production.

One of the guys from the kitchen was going around mopping up the front counter area, and I asked him to do his manliest pose, this is what I got. ^__^

Another Buff breasted sandpiper image from my last visit to the beach. Happened to stumble on it purely by chance and man it was a treat. It was feeding gregariously to restore its reserves after the long flight from Alaska and for the long flight ahead to South America. #Fall #Migration #Birds #Avian #Shorebirds #Buffbreasted #sandpiper #peeps

This photograph was obtained at a facility with no wildlife in captivity. Some birds, mammals, and insects were drawn within photographic range by the provision of various carefully maintained foods appropriate to the species and habitat. Natural foods were also abundantly available in the area within and around the facility.

The aircraft geek in me has taken over, I just had to post another one of the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fucker), just a few more from RIAT to go!

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress was designed and built by Boeing and operated by the United States Air Force. The aircraft first flew on 15 April 1952 and was built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War-era deterrence missions. Although a veteran of a number of wars, the Stratofortress has dropped only conventional munitions in combat. The B-52 carries up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons.[6] Its Stratofortress name is rarely used outside of official contexts; The B-52 has been in active service with the USAF since 1955. The bombers flew under the Strategic Air Command (SAC) until it was disestablished in 1992 and its aircraft absorbed into the Air Combat Command (ACC). This remained the case until February 2010 when it became part of Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC).

Rare sighting of a stunning buff-breasted sandpiper on the southern Washington coast!

These incredible shorebirds migrate thousands of miles from grasslands in Argentina or Uruguay up to the dry tundra of the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic.

Most buff-breasted sandpipers migrate back and forth through the Great Plains – states like Kansas, Nebraska and Texas – but there are recorded sightings on the Oregon and Washington coasts, too.

Buff-breasted sandpipers seen along the Pacific Flyway are typically juveniles, according to Richard Lanctot, a shorebird biologist for the USFWS.

“It is more common for birds to miss the main migration route and fly down the Atlantic Flyway,” added Lanctot.

This particular bird, seen at Willapa Bay National Wildlife Refuge and likely headed back to South America, stuck around for about four days in September while refueling on insects and maybe some small crustaceans.

You may think I know how to use flash, but nothing could be further from the truth!

Many thanks to all who comment, fave or just enjoy looking, it really is very much appreciated!

I caught this sandpiper down in the mud flats. I only got about 10lbs. of mud on each one of my boots to get close enough for a shot of him. I am almost certain that this is a "Buff-breasted Sandpiper" if I am wrong about the identification please let me know.
