That boy assembling a modern building with his Brickplayer rubber-bricks-and-putty outfit looks much too intense for an average 12-year old. J.W. Spears took out this half-page advert in the January 1960 Meccano Magazine. Sales were lacklustre, falling sharply after the more user-friendly Lego appeared on the market. Board games were a more profitable market for Spears, so Brickplayer faded from the scene later in the 1960s. But maybe our budding builder here was duly motivated to pursue a career in architecture. He might just have been old enough to inflict some nightmarish Brutalist buildings on us during the 1970s.

This is my April´s contribution to Photo-Heart Connection. I was almost sure that this photo would be my choice when I edited it a few weeks ago, and today, while I was looking over my files, I felt irreversibly attracted to it again

There is something about its composition that makes me think of my love for painting, which date back to my early childhood and has accompanied me since then. It reminds me the blissful amazement that I´ve experienced looking at the artwork of great impressionism masters, maybe because it captures the effect of light at a particular time of the day or maybe because the background shows what seems quick brushstrokes of color...

But there is also a story behind it (...)

The universe itself is God and the universal outpouring of its soul. --Chrysippus (Quoted by Cicero in De Natura Deorum)

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

Taken at my mom's garden. So surprising to see a few of these things budding in pots. Caution: Don't get too close. The ends are very sharp! I learned it the hard way.

Spring has come later than usual this year to Minnesota, so the trees were just starting to bud their leaves at the end of April.
