After many hours of frustration and far to many photos of a bowl of juice, I came up with this photo!

Two Nikon SB-28 used in this photo, on on the right side of bowl set to 1/8 at 24mm; other Nikon SB-28 set to 1/1 on top of stand on camera left to provide top fill.

A group of humpback whales bubble net fishing. The paler green colour of the water around the whale is caused by reflection of the air bubbles that the whales have blown to surround a ball of fish before driving up through them with their mouths open to trap them within. The water is pushed out through fringes of the baleen plates in their upper jaws which act as a sieve, trapping the fish which are then swallowed. (There is a pretty neat video of bubble netting humpbacks on youtube at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJvfjiCTvq4). As the whales surface fish jump to try to escape - which is why the birds are there. In fact the birds watch out for the tell-tale signs of the bubble net and gather well before the whales surface - a good clue as to where to look.

May, 13th, 2007. The wall of a parking garage in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Kim said, "I'm going to do a Davis-style shot." I think she nailed it: minimalism, serialism, careful use of focus.
