The pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a moth of the subfamily Thaumetopoeinae in the family Notodontidae, known for the irritating hairs of its caterpillars, their processions, and the economic damage they cause in coniferous forests.
Toxicity :
Stinging hairs contain a toxic protein that is very irritating and inflammatory: thaumetopoein. It penetrates where the “harpoon” is planted: most often in the skin, but also in the eye, the nose, the mouth…
The hair breaks and the toxin released causes a reaction similar to that of nettle stings: red pimples in the form of blisters, red itchy patches, appear on the skin.
General symptoms may occur in the event of significant exposure. The immune system then goes into overdrive, which can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure, discomfort or loss of consciousness.
Is there a risk for animals? With their noses at ground level, animals are exposed to contact with these stinging hairs, particularly dogs. They can get it on their coat, or even take a caterpillar in their mouth, which can cause very serious inflammatory reactions including necrosis of the tongue.

Dies ist der Vater oder wenigstens ein Onkel des Frischlings , dessen Bild ich vor kurzem hochgeladen habe. Ich hatte dort geschrieben, dass man so einem Brocken wie man ihn hier sieht wahrscheinlich nicht gerne in freier Wildbahn so nahe kommen möchte. Und dies schon zweimal nicht, wenn sie Junge haben. Europäische Wildschweine können bis zu 150kg schwer werden, sie rennen um einiges schneller als ein Mensch und sie können extrem kräftig beißen bzw. im Falle eines solchen Keilers einem auch mit den Hauern (der Name sagt es bereits) brutale Verletzungen zufügen. Das sind keine Streicheltiere. Ich stand hier aber ganz entspannt hinter einem doppelten Elektrozaun.

I wrote there that you probably wouldn't want to get too close to a beast like this in the wild especially when they have young ones. European wild boars can weigh up to 150 kg, they run much faster than a human and they can bite extremely hard or, in the case of a boar like this one, inflict brutal injuries with their tusks. These ain't no pets. But I stood here quite relaxed behind a double electric fence.

Die Mittelmeermöwe ähnelt optisch auf den ersten Blick sehr der Silbermöwe. Sie unterscheidet sich aber in den Details. So hat sie einen weißeren Kopf und gelbe Füße. Gemeinsam haben diese Großmöwen, dass sie ziemlich rabiate Zeitgenossen sind. Auf dem Foto sieht man wie eine Möwe eine andere abmurksen will, indem sie diese ertränkt. Der Angreifer beisst von hinten in Hals und Kopf seines Opfers und drück diesen immer wieder und ziemlich lang unter Wasser. Die brutale Auseinandersetzung dauerte knapp eine Viertelstunde bis die angreifende Möwe von ihrem Opfer ablies, das danach völlig erschöpft und blutend im Wasser schwamm. Den Grund für die Aggression konnte ich nicht erkennen aber Vögel fressen Vögel und es ist bekannt dass diese großen Möwen lebende Tauben fangen und töten um sie zu fressen. Ein Balzritual war es jedenfalls nicht. Bevor diese Möwe angegriffen wurde, hatte der Angreifer bereits eine junge Mittelmeermöwe im Flug gejagt. Als er die nicht erwischen konnte stürzte er sich auf diese zweite Möwe, die friedlich auf einer Mauer stand.
Info zur Komposition: Das Foto hat wieder einen mehr dokumentarischen Charakter. Ich habe es ausgewählt, weil sowohl die Aggression des Angreifers als auch die Angst des Opfers (vermeintlich) sichtbar ist. Solche Aggressionen gehören bei Aufnahmen von Tieren in freier Wildbahn immer dazu. Ohne diese besondere Situation hätte ich es wg. des ungünstigen Aufnahmewinkels verworfen.
At first glance, the Mediterranean gull looks very similar to the Herring gull. However, it differs in the details. For example, it has a whiter head and yellow feet. What these large gulls have in common is that they are quite aggressive creatures. In the photo you can see one gull trying to kill another by drowning it. The attacker bites the neck and head of its victim from behind and pushes it under water repeatedly and for quite a long time. The brutal fight lasted just under a quarter of an hour until the attacking gull let go of its victim, which was then found swimming in the water, completely exhausted and bleeding. I couldn't see the reason for the aggression, but birds eat birds and these large seagulls are known to catch and kill live pigeons to eat them. It certainly wasn't a courtship ritual. Before this gull was attacked, the attacker had (unsuccessfully) chased a young Mediterranean gull in flight. When that failed, it pounced on a gull that was standing peacefully on a wall.
Info about the composition: The photo again has a more documentary character. I chose it because both the aggression of the attacker and the fear of the victim are (supposedly) visible. Such aggression is always part of photographs of animals in the wild. If it wasn't for that special situation I would have dropped the image because of the camera angle.

The Siberian jay, also known as the Siberian tit, is found in the expansive coniferous forests and taiga regions of northern Finland. Finland provides a suitable habitat for Siberian jays due to the abundance of coniferous forests rich in food sources like seeds, berries, and insects essential for their survival. Siberian jays are comparable in size to a Eurasian nuthatch and have a distinctive appearance with a gray-brown body, light underparts, and rusty-red wing markings. Siberian jays are known for their bold and curious behavior around humans. Although I don't consider myself a bird photographer, a curious Siberian jay perched on a branch in front of me, allowing me to capture a good photograph with my zoom lens. They are opportunistic feeders and often visit campgrounds and human settlements in search of food. During the warmer months, Siberian jays gather a variety of food items including seeds, berries, nuts, insects, and small animals like mice. They bury or hide these food caches in various locations within their territory. In winter, they return to these stored food supplies to survive when natural food sources become scarce. They are highly skilled at relocating their hidden food, even under a layer of snow. This ability to store and retrieve food enables them to endure the harsh winter months when food resources are limited in the taiga. Siberian jays are social birds often seen in family groups or small flocks. They exhibit complex social behaviors including cooperative actions like mobbing predators and communicating with each other through distinctive calls and songs. My admiration for this small bird grew after encountering this curious Siberian jay.

During my visit, I encountered the Siberian jay, also known as the Siberian taiga or Siberian tit. These birds are integral to the taiga ecosystem, contributing to seed dispersal and pest control. Their adaptability to harsh winters and their curious interactions with humans make them a fascinating subject for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts. Korouoma Nature Reserve is a true treasure for nature lovers and a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Finnish wilderness.

Siberische jays zijn sociale vogels en worden vaak gezien in familiegroepen of kleine zwermen. Ze hebben complexe sociale structuren en vertonen samenwerkingsgedrag, zoals het belagen van roofdieren. Mijn respect voor dit kleine vogeltje is gegroeid door mijn ontmoeting met deze nieuwsgierige Siberische jay.
