The definition of bold:

Your goal for this assignment is to compose and take a photo of something that fits one or more of the definitions bold. Go for vivid, saturated colors, big brash subjects...go forth and be bold! While you are seeking out the boldness around you, be sure remember the elements of composition, dof, and all that other great photography stuff.

I arrived back in Boston on a red-eye Sat morning (I apologize that I haven't critiqued last weeks assignments - that will come soon, I promise) after a rather exhausing week-long business trip. Not wanting to crash and waste the day, I sent a message to Garrey(f) to ask if he had any weekend shooting plans.
We settled on another attempt at some long exposure images in Boston - first at the gardens and then in the city. I got some very satisfying images which I'll no doubt be posting over the next week and spent some time with Garrey trying to decide what would make a bold image. Since he refused to get into the Boston duck pond and pose next to the "pond closed" signs we had to settle for something a little less bold.
This image was taken near the pond. Mazshaxlong will recognise this as close to where we started when she visited Boston a couple of years ago. I decided that the dramatic sky and a moving carousel would be bold and dramatic and possibly a little creepy. I tried several variations of this from a few angles and was a little irritated when a man stepped into one of my shots. When I was looking through the images later though, I decided that his presence adds quite a lot to the story in the image.
I used a B+W 110 neutral density filter to get the long exposure during full daylight. In post processing I did some contrast adjustments and a little selective darkening to add drama to the sky.

A sure sign of spring was the rural mail carrier, having boxes of small chicks, in his car or a display of chicks at the feed store.

Poultry housing should provide clean, dry, comfortable quarters for birds throughout the year. To brood chicks, you need adequate heat and space. The house and equipment should be clean and in good repair. Set up and warm the brooding area before the chicks arrive. Chicks will need a warm, draft-free location with proper ventilation and access to clean water, appropriate feed and protection.
Space and equipment
The normal brooding period, when heat is required, is from the time chicks hatch until they are about six weeks old. Chicks may be brooded many places on the farm. The main requirements are adequate space, a reliable source of heat and proper ventilation. A brooder house measuring 10 by 12 feet will take care of 120 chicks to eight weeks of age.
