In March, 1980, a special rare-trackage Long Island Railroad excursion train sits alongside a platform on one of Belmont Park racetrack's stub tracks. For all the time I'd spent at Belmont as an employee, this was the first time I'd ever taken a train there. The American Freedom Train, minus its steam engine, had parked here at Belmont during its nationwide tour in 1976.
I expect scads of folks, diehard railbirds and dilettantes, will be crowding the LIRR's racetrack specials today, 6/7/14, for the prospect of possibly seeing the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years.
UPDATE: Evidently the LIRR expected an extra influx of patronage on the special trains for Belmont Stakes day, but seriously underestimated the extent of it. Questions remain about the railroad's ability to handle the swollen ridership even if its projections are dead on. Read about it as reported by the New York Times.
