Leander gets underway with the 'Coast to Coast' 1Z94 Liverpool-Scarborough at Brightside, 19.5.18.

At first sight I had assumed the 08:00 Derby RTC to Derby RTC was simply 37219 Jonty Jarvis on a route learning trip, running Derby to Brightside to Blackwell to Earles Sidings to Brightside and returning to Derby at 14:02, however photographing the first return from Brightside it was evident additional equipment was attached to the rear of the loco (for the northbound journey). Seen here passing Dore it is evident from the going away shot. The other end had a small camera mounted.

14.2.2016. Running some sixty minutes late, LMS Stanier Class 5MT 4-6-0 No 44871 pilots LMS Jubilee Class 6P 4-6-0 No 45699 'Galatea' away from Sheffield with 'The Tin Bath' (Preston - Manchester - Sheffield - Preston).

Taken from the old station footbridge at Brightside.

10.6.2017. On a dull June Saturday morning, LMS Stanier Jubilee Class 4-6-0 No 45690 'Leander' gets into its stride having just taken on water.

'The Coast to Coast Express' ( Liverpool Lime Street - Scarborough).

Considering the dull day I think b/w is well suited for this image.

Just before the arrival of the 'Tin Bath' charter from Preston via the Hope Valley, running around one hour late at this stage, the sun popped out of the dark clouds shadowing the city of Sheffield just in time to illuminate with back-lighting 'Black 5' 4-6-0 44871 and 'Jubilee' 4-6-0 45699 'Galatea' as they eased through the closed station of Brightside, checked due to a preceding service. The station was closed in 1995.

At 11.38am Northern 3 coach Class 158 Express sprinter DMU 158754 approaches Brightside Junction working 1J44 08.57 Scarborough to Sheffield service.

On the way back from Rotherham a change to catch this strange movement which heads south on a Friday evening (Sheffield 1715) and returns Saturday afternoon on the 0743 Willesden Euroterminal to Tyne SS.

The train of self discharge ballast wagons and an odd additional wagon approaches Brightside for a 20 minute layover in the rain. The driver gave me an odd look as I watched the train pass huddled under my umbrella. Given the weather conditions I opted not to wait another 20 minutes for its departure.

Northern Rail Class 150 No.150222 passes the sight of Brightside station with the 2R12 0807 Sheffield to Doncaster.

With the frost still lying thick on the ground, and the sun not yet having risen above the high retaining walls Northern Class 150 Sprinter DMU 150007 passes through the long deserted platforms of the disused station working 2B07 08.12 Huddersfield to Sheffield.

In the distance Cross Country Trains Class 221 Super Voyager DMU 221114 and Class 220 Voyager DMU 220030 now have a double yellow aspect to proceed now that 150007 has cleared Wincobank Junction working 1S35 06.36 Bristol Temple Meads to Edinburgh.

A few train rides of my youth have a habit of sticking in the memory purely for reasons of drama - for instance, passing by the coke works just south of Chesterfield in the evening with the orange glow lighting up the carriage and sulphurous fumes seeping through the windows.

Another such ride was the one between Sheffield and Rotherham where you passed an almost continuous line of steel foundries and factories hugging the trackside along the 9 mile route. And, to complete the industrial scene, there were seemingly endless supplies of vapours escaping outlets and stacks, and mineral wagons parked alongside loading bays bringing in supplies.

Fast forward 40 years and it's no surprise there's little left of this once thriving activity, although some of the more specialist factories have survived (including Sheffield Forgemasters, pictured) and still make a muted presence alongside the railway line. The mineral wagons and sidings are long gone though with supplies now being brought in by road.

Pictured here is the now disused Brightside station, with steps from the footbridge removed, and offering a view to the Sheffield skyline. The gritty and industrial feel still remains but, looking in the other direction, the retail park of Meadowhall now occupies the area where factories once stood, and the grassy environmental transition is well underway.

The train sweeping effortlessly by is a Cross Country Voyager working the 10.35 Newcastle - Reading (1V87) service. No clickety-clack on 60 foot rail-lengths, or awe-inspiring view of the once powerful Sheffield steel industry for these passengers.

I guess the Voyager won't appeal to everyone but this section of track still stirs the memories for me and it was good to finally get down here with a camera.

And you're only as small as the world will make you seem

Just look on the brightside...You're roughly six feet tall.
