I should have been driving back from France today ready for a 20:30 train. Sadly all changed last Friday and I'm back in the UK to capture the 08:03 Connisborough to Doncaster engineers headed by 56087 and a later Shireoaks to Toton engineers having dropped its loads of ballast.

56049 runs into Brightside having run around at Sheffield station moments earlier. The train should have run straight through to Doncaster, but due to signalling problems was held in the sidings here for 30 minutes beforeheading back to Doncaster the long way around via Wakefield.

Passing within minutes of each other 45690 Leander pulls out of Brightside sidings having taken on water and moments later 50007 and 50049 pass on the 1Z49 05:50 Cardiff Central to Newcastle. GBRF charter. The 50s should have passed about 20 minutes ahead of Leander, but delays around Birmingham and Derby meant the two quite literally ran nose to tail with the 47 at the rear on the steam tour visible at Meadowhall as the 50s rounded the corner at Brightside.

Disappointed to see diesel in place of the booked steam locomotive, although not sure whether that's as much as the fare paying passengers, 47245 heads away from the Brightside loop with 57313 on the 1Z96 1518 Buxton to Preston

The Royal Crescent, Bath

I think it's fair to say the Crescent is probably the number one architectural landmark in Bath and from a photographic point of view - one of the most difficult to capture. It was certainly mine on a recent overnight stop-off on the way to visit friends in Hampshire. Taken from the public park, there is no foreground features to aid composition and the upper half is a private lawn for residents only. Not that shooting from there would make any difference, as going closer in would highlight the permanent ring of parked vehicles blighting any clear shots.

So, a disappointing few hours shooting in glorious afternoon sunshine and nothing in the back of the camera looking half decent, but there's always something there if you look hard enough. This is a three frame stitched panorama and the shift to make most of the clouds rather than the Crescent has produced something I wasn't expecting... there's always a bright side.

It's not very often things go perfectly to plan for my early morning ventures, but today they did. I left on time, navigated the icy roads, didn't manage to forget anything, and walked up the icy path, to be the first person on Pen Y Fan , about an hour before sunrise. It was very cold, but as there was very little wind, it was perfect. Later I was joined by two other hardy souls, as it turned out I knew one of them, a small perfect world. This is to prove I was there and there was lots of snow. It has to be Mr Brightside by The Killers.
