The Breakers was built as the Newport summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, grandson of "The Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt who established the family fortune. It was designed by preeminent American architect Richard Morris Hunt, who built many of the family's lavish mansions, and completed it in only two years in 1895 at the then-astronomical cost of more than $7 million (approximately $150 million in today's dollars adjusted for inflation).
Isn't it beautiful? This was an unexpected part of the project, but it made total sense: replace the potentially faulty Federal Pacific (just google) breaker box with a new one that would be smaller and project less.
In addition to the new box, the electrician upgraded our breakers from 15 to 20 amps. Sweet! This means that we can now run the microwave and the toaster at the same time! Life is good.
"Breakers" is the fourth painting in the series, "Elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, Sea, and Sky." The contrast between the power of the sea against the rocks and the calm, shallow waters of shore is what drew me to this subject.
September 13, 2019 - "Trail Breaker Kennel has been a favorite stop on the Riverboat Discovery tour for over 20 years. During a three-hour river cruise, the Riverboat Discovery stops on the banks of the Chena River where visitors learn what it takes to run a championship kennel from David and his staff of dog mushers. After a dog mushing demonstration, visitors meet our amazing Alaskan huskies and their musher companions during their stop at the Chena Indian Village."
