This snowy egret was feeding in the sloughs in Brazos Bend State Park. Note that color bar by its eye is getting more red in it. This is an indication that breeding and nesting is coming soon. I also like their yellow slippers which are also getting more red in them.

We had a huge geocaching event called the 5th Annual Texas Challenge. This challenge pits teams from three Texas regions (North, Central, and South East) against each other to determine which region has the most skills. Sadly, the Central Region three-peated. They're not better geocachers, but they are definitely better at organizing themselves. South East, where I am, sucked eggs again, three-peating as losers.

But it wasn't a lack of trying on my part. My son and I were sent to gather tokens from the middle of the swamp. Actually, it wasn't a swamp when the tokens were placed a week ago, but we the park got 8" of rain. Since it is a flood plain, the place where the tokens were became a swamp.

My son and I were recruited because 1) we are pretty fearless, but mostly because 2) he is young and fast (soccer player), while I am old and faster than most guys my age (soccer ref). We went in with two others, and he and I ran out. Literally. We were up against the deadline and the token had to be hustled out.

What we ran over I don't like to think too much about. The two we left behind came across a family of feral pigs, and others from the other teams who went to the same area reported seeing water moccasins and copperhead snakes. We didn't see them because we were sprinting.

Even though our team came in last, we had a great time. And that, really, is the point of the Texas Challenge.

This is my one hundred eighteenth photo for 365 Days.

No processed stuff for us. Just hand fed free range racoon meat. Yummy. Liam ignores the "don't feed the animals" sign at Brazos Bend. The little masked bastard later returned to steal all of our chocolate bars.

There are huge lily pads all over 40-acre lake right now. The flowers are gorgeous.

The Eastern Phoebe is a loner, rarely coming in contact with other phoebes. Even members of a mated pair do not spend much time together. They may roost together early in pair formation, but even during egg laying the female frequently chases the male away from her. (all about birds)

This guy seemed interested in making good on the promise of alligator sightings. He didn't seem too annoyed, just sunbathing, really.

I'm going to leave everyone with a couple of shots here. I am switching interned providers tomorrow after MANY years with my present provider. I hope it is a fairly seamless switch, but reality always lets me know how QUICKLY things can get fouled up.

These two shots will be the last of the batch from Brazos Bend State Park. If you are ever in the Houston area you really need to pay it a visit. The little female cardinal was also being very friendly and posing, but was also dancing about in the tree branches. They are much more accessible here at Brazos Bend State Park than on the bayou.

On Monday, Carl and I ate lunch in Lake Jackson at All-Star Pizza. We had the delicious buffet of pizza, calzones, and cookies. Afterwards we drove to Brazos Bend State Park where we saw some wildlife exhibits and saw some wildlife: butterflies, a deer, a snake, baby alligators, some birds, and a baby coyote?

Then we drove to the museum district of Houston. At the Houston Museum of Natural Science, we toured two exhibits: Terra Cotta Warriors and the Spirits & Headhunters: Vanishing Worlds of the Amazon. We also saw the skeletons of some dinosaurs and exhibits of animals from Africa.

We had planned to go to the Houston Zoo since it was open free to the public on Columbus Day, but they wouldn't let us inside since it was less than an hour before closing time. Instead we found Hermann Park with a pond, some ducks, some coy, a turtle, and some statues. It was a nice find at the end of the day.

We drove back to Lake Jackson and ate a most delicious steak at Salt Grass Steak House before returning to Carl's house for me to pack up and leave early the next morning.

No points for art with this set, but hopefully interesting. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas
