After an eventful day three, which saw the coaching stock derail in York Yard first thing this morning, a 61 late start from York and a shortcut via Stalybridge, the Branch Line Society's 'Summer Syphon' tour, with day three entitled 'The Primary Colours', passes Chelford just 36 late, having seen 70011 and 70019 join the party at Heaton Norris Junction for the run thrugh to Crewe. 37422 (37266) is tucked in behind the Freightliner pair, with 37423 bringing up the rear.
Things would go downhill rather rapidly on the tour's return from Crewe to York, with 37423 firstly experiencing power issues, necessitating an unscheduled trip to Manchester Piccadilly to allow 37422 to lead, before 422 sat down at Earles Sidings with low oil pressure, having to be rescued by 66066. Still, plenty of potential winners for haulage for those on board!
The tour is running in aid of Martin House Hospice, which provides family led care for children with life shortening conditions. It is a place where children, young people and their families can come to stay from time to time along their journey and find support, rest and practical help. You can find out more about the hospice, and donate if you're able to do so, at www.martinhouse.org.uk

English Electric 1959 built Class 40 D213 ANDANIA (40013) was turned out impressively polished. I don't think I have ever seen a class 40 turned out so well! Here she is seen at Crewe at the conclusion of the tour heading back at the rear of the Saphos Train to the LSL Depot.

A classic scene at Darlington station - apart from contemporary signage and seats, and the overhead electrification, little has changed over the decades, especially with the presence of Class 37 37403 standing in the station with the Doncaster-Merchant Park Sidings-Saltburn ''The Merchant of Teesside' Branch Line Society charter on Saturday 9th April.

37423 'Spirit of the Lakes' and 66053 head the somewhat late running 1Z37 Carlisle to York leg of the 'The Europort Explorer' ('The Summer Syphons': Day 1) past Ais Gill on 02 Jul 21. This was delayed due to 37419 deciding that it fancied impersonating a steam engine for a bit (smoke billowing from the engine compartment) around Culgaith, before being removed from the train and left at Kirkby Thore. 66044 is on the rear.
What a beautifully kept station Hebden Bridge is and it is a credit to the 'Friends' who help to maintain it. Some classic English Electric traction looks perfectly at home between platform 2 and the 125-year old signal box, decommissioned in October 2018 and sadly already attracting graffiti on the brickwork. West Coast Railway Co. 37669 is on the rear of the 1Z37 06:06 Lancaster to Wrenthorpe Reception leg of the 'Luca Pezzullo Express' Branch Line Society charter, which took in along its route on Saturday 20th July 2019, Tinsley, Stocksbridge, Hull and Kellingley Colliery.

37403 Isle of Mull leads 1Z69 14.10 South Dock Port of Sunderland - Doncaster across Grangetown (Ocean Road) level crossing in Sunderland, approaching the red signal protecting Ryhope Grange Jn. This was the final leg of the Branch Line Society's "The Tweedmouth Tractors" railtour, the first day of a three-day tour originally advertised as "The Tyne Tees Tractors". [Pole, 2/6 sections (~2.7m)]
This was the main shot I was after today, and I was pleased that the train's appearance coincided with a reasonable patch of blue sky. I first did this angle back in 1997 with the oil tanks, but the sun didn't play ball and it was August 2021 before I finally managed it in sun (with a 60 on the steel, a flow which didn't run very many times). But today I had plenty of time to set up, and discovered that I only needed to extend the pole by one section (and tall step ladders would have sufficed); indeed, going higher meant the angle of the train was less pleasing, although it would have got over the vegetation in the immediate foreground. I also managed a shot of the train going down the branch, about an hour earlier (having chased it from Pelaw, and arrived just after it had gone into Ryhope Grange Sidings to reverse), but the sun didn't come out until the train was some distance beyond the level crossing (roughly level with the site of the old Gas Sidings) - and, anyway, it was still not quite far enough round.
At this point the train was about twenty minutes (or more) early, and I wondered whether it would be held to time.. there was nothing booked ahead of it, so it could set off straight away. One person here decided to try to chase it to Newburn Road at Hartlepool, and I nearly did the same - but then made the decision just to go on the road bridge over Ryhope Grange Jn. (and made it just in time, as the train did set off just over ten minutes early!).
I travelled this line on 12th August 2000, on the Branch Line Society's "Durham Coast Railtour", which got as far as the Stop board at the bottom of the bank just before the line into the former oil terminal. I was especially keen to get this shot, because I used to trainspot here as a child - when this line was still double track, the level crossing had a crossing keeper and semaphore signals protecting it, and 37-hauled unfitted coal trains were frequent.

On Sunday November 14, 2021 the Branch Line Society paid a private visit to the Bala Lake Railway.
As well as a return trip between Llanuwchllyn and Bala Lake Halt hauled by Baguley - Drewery locomotive BOB Davies.
Members were able to enjoy rides over almost all the available track using using ex RAF locomotive CHILMARK as well at the modern 2001 built MURPHY a Schöma (pronounced Sherma) diesel tunnel loco donated to the railway by Murphy Construction.
Were locomotive haulage was not possible hand propulsion was undertaken using a Dinorwic Quarry 'Yellow Truck' which was reputedly used to carry Royal visitors on the Dinorwic Quarry Railway and Penrhyn Railway quarrymen's carriages along with a pump trolley!

37403 'Isle of Mull' makes an unusual appearance crossing the River Thames at Kingston at the head of 'The Wolf Hall Thunderer' tour which was operated by RailAdventure in cooperation with the Branch Line Society. The tour took 37403 and 50008 'Thunderer' to a number of branches in the South West of London including Chessington, Hampton Court and almost all routes one can think of to Guildford! At this point in the charter 37403 is leading the train as 1Z44 from Shepperton to Wimbledon via Twickenham to take in the Fullwell Curve.
While the weather was not perhaps what we had hoped for, enthusiasts were unsurprisingly out in droves to see this unusual train. Hopefully the ability to shoot from the air with my drone has captured a few more unusual angles of this excursion.

37516 Loch Laidon approaches Grewgrass User Worked Crossing at the end of Cat Flatt Lane in Marske, working the final leg of the Branch Line Society's "The Merchant of Teesside" railtour, 1Z72 17.39 Saltburn - Doncaster. Long Beck station is just visible in the background. [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]
This wasn't my original choice of location for this train, but it soon became obvious that further inland there was still a great deal of cloud. It was sunny in Saltburn, and when we arrived here the sun was on the edge of the cloud and, indeed, went in and came back out again at least once while we waited.
I then chased it to Moorhouse Estate just south of Stockton Cut Jn. (north of Eaglescliffe), and made it with plenty of time to set up - but although the sun had found a big gap in the clouds, it started to go in only about three minutes before the train arrived. So this was my last sunny shot of the weekends tours, as I wasn't in the area for Sunday's gyrations.
Note that locals pronounce the place name Marske as "mask" with a short 'a'.

Running nearly an hour late and sent straight down the ECML away from its booked route of Temple Hirst and Selby canal junctions, The Branch Line Societys "Lackenby Looper" heads north at Colton Junction behind Freightliners 70016 and 66955, both powering the train. DB's 66010, newly painted after a long stint in France is on the rear. This loco will take the train forward from Tees Yards, with 60062 replacing the Freightliner traction on this end of the train. It will visit Hartlepool Pipe Mils, Lackenby Grids, Skinningrove and finally Redcar Ore Terminal before returning back to Doncaster, the trains start point. July the 9th 2022.
