More fooling around with the skull model. This one inspired by some ELP I was listening to at the time.

Blythe a Day - Use Your Brain - 10/26/24

A lone Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) does its best to blend inconspicuously with a number of Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) and Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus) in Santa Barbara, California. There is a line in 'My Cousin Vinny' when Marisa Tomei's character looks at Joe Pesci and says sarcastically, "Oh yeah, you blend" as he attempts (and fails) to negotiate small-town America. The general dustbin for the flotsam of distant popular culture that is my brain could not stop inwardly chuckling when I spied the Skimmer.

My oldest son and I visited Southern California a few months ago to see a few colleges and talk with admissions and athletics staff. In Santa Barbara, we found some reasonable tacos in a tiny restaurant then did what apparently most tourists do and wandered out to Stearns Wharf for a spell after strolling along the beach, checking out birds and waves. The Wharf was constructed in 1872 by someone named Stearns, and apparently it was something of a boon to the local economy. Without the wharf, there was no place between Los Angeles and San Francisco for a deep-water ocean going ship to tie up. It was necessary for boat passengers wishing to visit Santa Barbara to be rowed ashore through kelp and breakers. Old Man Stearns was in the lumber business, and the wharf was also critical to getting his logs and other freight shipped to market.

Today, Stearns Wharf accommodates several restaurants, tourist shops, ice cream parlors, and above all, parking. Looking at the wharf from the air, it is clear that there is room for a row of shops to line each side, and that would leave plentiful outdoor seating space while creating a plaza like experience. However, ever in service of our beloved automobiles, the good city council people and planners in Santa Barbara have evidently found it compelling to devote a great deal of this prime real estate to the humble parking lot. I suppose if you can't drive there, it doesn't count.

a Black&White study of some brain rock

Yellow Brain Fungus / tremella mesenterica. Pioneer Meadows, Derbyshire. 29/01/18.

A pleasing local find growing on a thin fallen Hazel branch.

I had watched this fungus develop over about a week and seized the opportunity to photograph it after a night of heavy rain. Fully hydrated it was at its gelatinous best!

Another marvellously named fungus. I think this is Leafy Brain (Tremella foliacea) as far as I can work out anyway. There are so many closely related species of fungus I’m never 100%

One of the Jelly Fungus family, if I have the identification right it is a fungus that develops and feeds on another fungus in decaying wood.

Nature is amazing!

One of the fascinating features in the White Pocket area is what they call "brain rock". These are little dome like protuberances that exhibit cracks and fissures throughout that give the appearance of the surface of a person's brain.

White Pocket is a dream place for people who take pictures. The way that light and dark play together, especially when the sun is coming up or going down, makes the rocks look even more interesting. It changes all the time so it's always different. The place being far away means not a lot of bright lights at night. This makes it great for taking amazing pictures of the stars.Walking in White Pocket is a unique adventure. The place is not big, but it has rough and uneven ground. You need to go very carefully there. There is no set path, so visitors can walk and find the special shapes at their own speed. It's a spot that promotes searching and gives prizes to the inquisitive. The 'brain rocks' or 'cauliflower rocks' are one of White Pocket's most intriguing features.

Excerpt from brainproject.ca:

Graphic contemporary artist Kestin Cornwall believes sports and art help to create a community, bringing people together as fans, on teams, in running groups and as workout partners. He is also interested in the theory of epigenetic inheritance: the idea that environmental factors can affect the genes of children. Cornwall realizes there are positive and negative implications, and points out we must be sure we use them to bridge gaps and start conversations. Cornwall feels we need to push our collective consciousness toward a more positive, bright and inclusive future.

The Yogen Früz Pinkberry Brain Project brings attention to the importance of physical and mental health. Cornwall believes it is the duty of an artist to add beauty to the world while invoking the unending social responsibility of capturing thought. His work looks to a vibrant, diverse, loving and healthier future for this generation and those to come.
