I helped Mark braid 4 strands of climbing rope into one thick rope he could use as a rope-climbing workout at home. He had a long pause as he got lost in his braid and worked to figure it out. I used the time to sketch things at hand.

As we flew over Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang we saw China’s magnificent deserts spread out beneath us. What amazed me were the settlements in the middle of nowhere: small enclosures at the end of a road, with dried-up fields nearby.
I was fascinated by these braided streams, formed by water run-off from the mountains in the distance.
