Ilhabela - Island of beauty, so named by the original inhabitants.
It is the continent’s largest sea island having an area of 336 square Km.
It has a 128 Km seashore and is around 3 Km from the seaport of
São Sabastião. The dirt track we travelled along to get to Castelhanos from Balsa, is shown in orange, across the middle of the island.
There are 18 known shipwrecks around the island between 1884 and 1951.
Eighty six % of the surface is covered by MATA ATLÂNTICA, a kind of
forest and scrub, which shelters the Ilhabela State Park.
It is considered to be one of the most precious biological reserves
of the planet. Of the remaining 14 % only about 2 % is occupied.
It has 360 waterfalls. Little fishing villages still preserve the habits and
costumes from the beginning of the last century. All together there are
26 communities isolated around the island.
Desert beaches, wild tracks, typical food, handicrafts, boat rides,
fishing, horse riding, night life and a great variety of other attractions
make this island an exquisite place, pleasing the most demanding tastes.

BR Mk.I RE No.S1105 in BR (SR) green livery. Built as an RF Restaurant First, Diagram 16, Lot 30013, at BR (Doncaster) in 1952 as No.E302, it was subsequently rebuilt as a Diagram 31 RE Griddle Car in 1965 No.Sc1105. On withdrawal from passenger service it became Departmental No.DB975878. The car was built with Commonwealth bogies but was since refitted with heavy duty B5 bogies. At Medstead & Four Marks, Mid Hants Railway ('the Watercress Line'), 27 April 2025.
In 1960 BR decided to build some experimental Griddle Cars, inspired by Bulleid’s imaginative but flawed Tavern Cars of 1949 for BR(SR). Three Griddle Cars (designated RE) were built new to Diagram 30 in 1963, Lot 30637, with a central pantry/counter flanked by a buffet saloon and a bar saloon. They were followed by three more RE’s to Diagram 31 with revised internal arrangements, the bar saloon being smaller and the buffet saloon larger. A seventh, a new build to a further modified RE design, Diagram 32, Lot 30782 and designated a Booth Car followed in 1968. This had just one large buffet saloon.
It was thought the Griddles would be particularly suitable for cross country services where Restaurant Cars were not viable. Unfortunately, it was decided the costs of further Griddle Cars, even conversions, could not be justified and no more were built. They were withdrawn 1978-80.
