A little old lady making her way past a typical urban police box (koban/交番) near Sakuragicho Station in central Yokohama, Japan. Note the police officer’s bicycle on the right, which has a little white box behind the bicycle seat for documents the officer will use when doing work on-site, including passing out parking tickets.

Although there are police stations like what you’d find in the West with administrative offices, jailing facilities, etc., most interactions with the police in Japan occur at your local koban, which are spread throughout the city and are often located in convenient areas where there is typically a lot of foot traffic.

This ornate box had an interesting wound on its shell that can kind of be seen from this shot.

Seen at the corner of Askin and Wyandotte Sts in Windsor, Ontario, May 2005. More here: www.qwantz.com/posterchild/ (scroll down to see the guy getting ready to put up these very boxes, in front of Giglio's Market and Hair by Rudy & Nancy, on Wyandotte.

I wish I'd known at the time that there was a prize inside the boxes, but these ones were much too high to reach.

This was a play session in empty boxes when we moved last summer.

This is the indicator box of the freight elevator. Someone would press the buzzer on their floor and it would ring. At the same time, one of the numbers will pop up in the display, becoming more visible. Still working as the date off this shot.

Even though both boxes are identical, Wrangler was annoyed that Freddy was in the box that he considered his. After an unsuccessful attempt to evict Freddy, Wrangler begrudgingly settled down in the other box.

It didn't start out to be round, or oval I guess, it started out as a regular square box, but I thought it was a bit too chunky or something, so I decided to round over the corners at the bandsaw.

The main body of the box is Kingwood, one of those dense, oily tropicals that doesn't take a film finish well, so it had just one light coat of Danish Oil finish, and some furniture wax.

The lid is cherry, with two slightly curvy strips of walnut running through it. It was cut from a larger piece that I did a while ago just as a proof of concept for a future project, which turned out to be this one.

A box outside of a restaurant near the outdoor seating. A waiter walked up to me and asked me to leave after i took this :)

The Postcard

A Go-Well Series postcard that was posted in Brighton on Monday the 7th. February 1916 to:

Miss Lelliott,

76, Tisbury Road,

Hove,

Sussex.

The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"With all best wishes,

From F. D."

The Launch and Sinking of HMS Nomad

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 7th. February 1916, British destroyer HMS Nomad was launched by Alexander Stephen and Sons at Glasgow, only to be sunk at the Battle of Jutland five months later.

The Lady Hardinge Medical College

Also on that day, the Lady Hardinge Medical College was established in New Delhi. It was named after the late Winifred Sturt, also known as Lady Hardinge, wife of Sir Charles Hardinge, Viceroy of India, who envisioned a college that provided women with opportunities to study medicine.

Sony A700 - Minolta 50mm 1.7

This box was my final project for my woodworking class in my first semester at BCIT. It was constructed out of black walnut and finished with 4 coats of danish oil and briwax. I was really happy with how the knot turned out in the top of the box, especially the smoky section on the far right portion of the knotted panel. This was my first time doing box joints, and while the joints themselves were not to difficult to create, sanding the walnut end grain took quite some time.

I didn't have, or take, the time to focus this on my father rather than the building.

I am glad this box jellyfish was in a tank. I would hate to tangle with it in the sea.
