Here's a homemade light box I whipped together for a friend using leftover materials from past projects.... 1/4" foam core board, poster board and vellum paper, all held together with PVA glue! The test subject is an old model I built in 1983, the classic Revell 1/48th scale Apollo Lunar Module.

Each year, Gallery Route One in Point Reyes invites over a hundred artists to create unique works of art using a wooden box.

Here are the inspiring artworks they created this year: they range in style from whimsical to poignant and thought-provoking. These photos were taken on closing day, when the gallery organized a live auction for each of this year’s 150 boxes. The proceeds support the gallery’s exhibits and community programs.

Two of the boxes were created by members of our art community: Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain) contributed an illuminated box called ‘Magical’, while Geo Monley and Meryl Rubenstein made ‘Les Puzzles.’

Members of ‘Pataphysical Studios came to cheer for their peers -- Dr. Really was the highest bidder for Dr. Rindbrain’s piece, which was thus kept in the family. After the show, we all went to Stellina to celebrate over a nice dinner.

Good looking but unfortunately it's an invasive species in the UK; being first recorded In Kent in 2007. It has since spread rapidly and its caterpillars make a meal of Box hedges and topiary. Oh well.

Just finished a pair of tissue boxes made out of glass tile, which was really nice to work with. Each time I try something new, I learn a little more, and I'm looking forward to working on a third...

This Box Turtle has taken up residence in my ground bird bath. He is in the bath every day and often completely submerged. His little head pokes out for a breath of air on occasion and then he is back to his cool shady bath :)

Brazilian Satinwood is a naturally yellow wood that comes from South America. The Satinwood, when it is cut right, you can see the light move in the grain pattern as you move the box side to side just as on satin fabric. There are no stains on any of the wood that you see on this box. GOD did not limit himself to the brown tones when he made wood.

The type of wood is listed on the bottom of the box from the center out. On this box the wood is “Wenge” from West Africa, “Pink Ivory” from South Africa (a wood that is sacred to the Zulu tribe). “Black Palm” from Indonesia. (I cut this on an angle to give the black dots a different look) “Purpleheart” from Central or South America is a very bright purple wood. Then “Satinwood” from Brazil is used on the main part of the box. The Brazilian Satinwood has a more bright yellow color to it than the golden color that the satinwood from Sri Lanka has.

Some of my local pillar boxes are sporting snazzy crocheted hats this season.
