Not the motive power this time, but the facility. A trio of F40PH-2 units, the 4118/4124/4115, plus HEP-retrofitted GP40P No. 4109, hang out at the South Amboy ready tracks on 14 August 1987. Within months this terminal which bridged the steam, electric, and diesel eras, will be empty, as operations move to the new Meadowlands complex.

We are kind of like that teenage kid that borrows their parents car and then totals it. Hope you have a great weekend.

Priority doublestacks speed east towards Milwaukee and Chicago past the searchlights at Duplainville, Wisconsin. Like nearly all old signalling infrastructure, these lights are on borrowed time for sure.

CN 8103 leads train X371 through Brantford on a nice Friday afternoon. While working in the afternoon I received a heads up about the train and bagging it after work was a no brainer.

With CN 8100 already repainted and CN 8101 and 8102 at Centralia presumably also for paint getting 8103 in some great light was a must.

UP SD60M 2247 hustles up to Homer East with CP 475's train strung out behind it and a UP C44-9W. The days before I had my drivers license were tough because while I could go out after a train like this one, whoever was driving me usually wasn't up to chasing the train for the entire afternoon. I can only imagine what this looked like in the Lake City area..

L303 is working its way east from Grand Rapids to Detroit, clicking off the miles and passing the classing search lights as they go but this trip is far different than my last visit. Just a couple days before this CSX removed 4 sets of searchlights between here and Lansing making the 105 signals in Mulliken the eastern most set until you get to the other side of Lansing. A storm over the summer leveled all kinds of code line making this section of the railroad top priority to be replaced and upgraded, While this was just 6 days ago its very possible that these too are now gone. No new signals are in place yet but a signal suspension is in place making these just extra unneeded upkeep and expenses.

On September 11, 1996, Southern Pacific merged with Union Pacific in one of the biggest mergers in railroad history. Since that event occurred, almost all of the SP engines have been completely repainted to Union Pacific livery, scrapped, or sold off. But a handful of them, just patched with a UP number below the conductor and engineer window...still run on the system in 2023.

UP 6236 is one of those engines. It's rare to see it in person; it's even rarer to see it lead. But 27 years after the merger, this engine not only has managed to avoid the paint can, for the most part...on this night, it managed to lead a train. Here it is heading eastbound with a mixed manifest, ducking under the coal chute in DeKalb, Illinois, on a chilly winter night.

I'm a little flat chested here. Unfortunately larger breastforms will not fit with the blouse.

"Something blue."

A casual friend is giving the gift of photography to her best friend who is getting married. She asked me if I would do some wedding photography for her mature friend's wedding.

I am putting together some floral stills and then will take a portrait of the bride and groom to go together as a set. Because of the couples' age, I'm making this a very traditional pairing of images. (This can all be shot at home where I feel comfortable creating something for them.)

For now, I am working on the old wedding custom of: "Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue."

What the final choice for "Something Blue" will be is up to the woman who hired me. This is one of my favorite outtakes.

It's lovely fun to be invited to share in the joy of another couple's wedding! She understands that I can't photograph the "moving targets" of the wedding itself, but she said she wanted me because she likes my florals and botanicals.

I feel so happy for the friend who invited me to be a part of the wedding and for the couple.

I hope these two women will be happy with my wedding-related floral photos as keepsakes to the special day.

Cheers!

Both this SD60 and the PRR-era signal bridge at CP Cannon are living on borrowed time. Most of Norfolk Southern's SD60 locomotive have been put into storage. The 6711 is one of only a handful left on the road. And the PRR signals are already being replaced across the Pittsburgh Line.

Two unusual leased engines rest at the PHL's yard in Long Beach. These engines added some variety from the standard black and silver power, but I don't think they lasted very long here.

A little over a week ago the Federal Minister of Transport for Canada, Pablo Rodriguez, announced that funds have been allocated for the replacement of VIA Rail's long distance passenger fleet. RFP's for 40 new locomotives and 300 passenger cars are being prepared, and once issued the countdown to the demise of VIA's classic Budd car fleet begins.

I know that like any government project, this process will take years to complete, and likely face budget cuts, and delays. Either way though, it formalizes what we have all known for years, that a good thing can't last forever.

I was just a baby when the last trip of the Rio Grande Zephyr ran. I'm not sure how much notice the fans of that last great American streamliner got, but I'm sure that the writing was on the wall for that train in the years after the creation of Amtrak. Looking at how well photographed the final trio of DRGW F9's and stainless consist were, especially post 1979, I think the railfan community understood what it still had.

Freight railroading has always held a greater appeal to me to watch over passenger operations. However, I'm going to be refocusing what spare time I have for railroad photography to capture as much of the current iteration of The Canadian as I can while it lasts. I hope that anyone who has ever wanted to ride or photograph this iconic train takes advantage of the time left to do so.

I borrowed these girls for this shot!! No. these two saved my life today as they were my understudies for a show at a prestigious auditorium in Austin. As understudies, they were borrowed. Thank goodness for both of them

One of the benefits of working with someone who seems to own one of every camera is that he brings them to work to let you borrow them. Gabriel brought his Hasselblad Super Wide to work a couple weeks ago and for a few days I got to play with it. I don't think I will ever own a Super Wide of my own... not sure I can justify the expense of this camera for how specific its use is... but then again I do own a Flexbody so I suppose never say never.

The Norfolk Coastline at Happisburgh with the clouds colourfully lit by the setting sun and the lighthouse just being turned on. Don't know how much longer we will have this view as I've just found out that in the past 23years, 105mtrs has been erroded from this site.

With this train on borrowed time I decided to make the long trip west to capture it one of the most iconic spots on the 'west end' where you can get a sweeping view of the train itself and not just the power. Berkshire and Eastern Railroad train B100 curls thru Pownal Curve beside the frozen Hoosic River near MP 433.5 on the B&E operated Pan Am Southern Freight Mainline, the one time Boston and Maine Fitchburg Division.

B100 is the symbol B&E uses for the continuation to Ayer of Norfolk Southern train 264 (intermodal 63rd Street Yard in Chicago to Mechanicville) that used to be known as 22K. The train is led by the standard SD60E which is necessary due to it being one of a small fleet of this model equipped with ACSES for operation on the MBTA property east of Westminster. This train is on borrowed time here because one condition of the sale of Pan Am to CSXT in 2022 was the granting of trakage rights to NS for the operation of one daily pair of premium trains (this one and its westbound counterpart) over CSXT's former Boston and Albany route. These trains will then take the old Delaware and Hudson Albany main to Voorheesville, NY and utilize the connection on to Selkirk Branch which has been rebuilt there. From there they will travel east via Selkirk Yard, the Castelton Bridge and the Berkshire and Boston Subs to Worcester and on up to Ayer. Allegedly that routing will commence June 1, so if you want shots of 'the pig train' on the old Boston and Maine the time is now!

I'm running out of words to describe the low-tide seascapes of Porto Santo. I guess it's because I love them so much. I fear I'm going to bore everyone half to death when I describe what I feel when I look at them because I tend to relive how I felt when I took these photos, and I know nobody cares about that 😆. So... Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? I went against every fibre of my being and decided to ask AI to describe my photo. Wow... I know, right? 😅 At least you'll be bored by AI's description and not mine 😛 And I'll just say that the AI-generated description made my photo sound much more artist-y than I ever thought possible 😄 Check it out:

"The image captures a scenic coastal landscape, presenting a harmonious blend of natural elements. The foreground is dominated by a sandy beach, characterised by its warm, golden-brown hue. Subtle details like footprints in the sand suggest recent human presence, adding a touch of narrative to the otherwise untouched scene.

To the right, the beach transitions into a cluster of large, weathered rocks. These rocks exhibit a textured surface, with shades of brown and tan, and hints of green moss, suggesting exposure to the elements over time. The moss adds a vibrant contrast to the earthy tones of the rocks.

Beyond the beach and rocks, a body of water, likely the ocean, stretches towards the horizon. The water exhibits a muted blue-green colour, possibly due to the depth and the reflection of the sky. Small waves gently lap against the shore, creating a sense of movement and tranquillity.

In the background, two prominent landmasses rise from the water. These appear to be rocky islands or cliffs, with dark, imposing silhouettes. Their rugged surfaces and varying heights contribute to the overall depth and visual interest of the scene.

The sky above is a canvas of blue, interspersed with fluffy, white clouds. The clouds add dimension and dynamism to the scene, and their arrangement hints at a slightly overcast day. The light from the sky gently illuminates the entire landscape, creating a sense of calm and openness.

The composition of the image is well-balanced, with the beach and rocks in the foreground providing a grounding element. The water and landmasses in the background add depth and scale, and the sky completes the scene. The overall effect is a serene and picturesque portrayal of a coastal environment."

Who knew there were so, so, so many words to say about a low-tide photo of the beach of Porto Santo? Here's the TL;DR version for you: It's a nice beachscape 😍

Porto Santo, Madeira Archipelago – Portugal

The Sunday after Thanksgiving is historically Amtrak's busiest day of the year, with extra holiday travelers going up and down the Northeast Corridor. To keep up with the demand, Amtrak rents out a few extra MARC and New Jersey Transit sets to make the trip from New York to Washington, DC. Seen here a long way from its usual DC-Perryville turf, a MARC HHP8 leads a northbound extra (train 1054) past the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia.

I borrowed my dad's hip waders and Petey and I went on a quick photo safari. After shooting several shots of Petey holding still for longer exposures I decided I would shoot him at a faster shutter speed and blend with a longer shutter speed shot of the falls. I liked how it worked out. The blended shot is f22 and 1/6 second

What will our new bride select for her "something borrowed"?

In my family, a strand of pearls was something loaned from an older family member for one's wedding day.

Hope our new bride has wonderful choices to select from for her special day.

A friend and I first discovered this barn back in January (2019) and it was just starting to lean but was standing tall and proud. This past weekend we made the nearly 2-hour drive to revisit it hoping it was still in decent shape but were surprised to find it's on the verge of collapsing.

It breaks my heart to see it go but I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to spend some time here and make a couple of photos of it. I plan on going back to check on this tired old barn every few weeks until it inevitably loses the battle with gravity.

"There is a quiet wind voice inside of me. It's the same voice inside of you. Delicate and persevering, it led us towards each other. Across desert sand, traffic noise, solitary sky. I found your little house by the sea. And I never wanted to leave...."

… It's where we all stand, regardless of the hill or valley you may call home.

Peace.

Abandoned heritage home, Richmond Hill Cottage in St. John's, Newfoundland. Built in 1848 it has been empty for years and is slated for demolition in the near future. Like many heritage properties, its main downfall was the fact that it sat on a large piece of land in the middle of the city. The land was divided up with new homes built on it. Richmond Cottage was then left to deteriorate by the developers. It's been for sale but the neglect and damage was too severe to attract any buyers. A sad end to another heritage property in the city. I grew up in this neighborhood and this house was always occupied and quite beautiful at the time.

Dash8's are living on borrowed time, so it was a nice surprise to hear that CN X106 had two of them for power. Here it passes through Dorval with CN 2130, BCOL 4617 & 151 platforms.

With the signals already returned to danger, the 6.25am Jaipur - Sikar (train 52085) cuts through the early morning smog as it draws slowly over the broad-gauge diamond crossing at Ringas Junction in the hands of NWR liveried Alco YDM-4 unit 6651.

With this metre-gauge line due for conversion to broad gauge anytime now, the splendid semaphores will also bite the dust to be replaced by colour lights.
