I hope this lots of mountain pics are not toooo boring...

End of the week i show photos from Dresden...

The big view!

Finally!

The Boreal Owl has been a "grail" bird for many years.

This Owl was captured, banded and released by licensed Owl bander Richard Chamberland. I got this shot after the release when it captured an offered mouse.

It is unusual to see a Boreal Owl in daylight in winter. It usually means they are starving. This individual was captured at a bird feeder. this morning. After the capture, it got three good meals.

Thanks to Richard for this great opportunity and thanks again to him and other banders here who help keep these wonderful birds alive by taking them in to their homes, feeding them and keeping them strong so they can get back out there and live their natural lives.

Didn't have anything to do while waiting for the rain to pass so I improvised.

Taken earlier in the day than previous photo.

It was a cold day, I didn't feel like climbing out of the truck. I didn't feel like rolling down the window. I actually wanted to get home. I shot through the windshield, hoping to catch that last afternoon subarctic light. I think the windshield gives it a kind of tilt-shift effect.

Well I went to pick up GP at work...so while I was waiting for him to come out I got bored....so...always carry a camera with you and wham....take it out and start shooting and playing ....this is the result :-) No, you don't need to get your eyes checked it's blurry on purpose.

(more to come!)

Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek. I hope you all know that I appreciate your comments however, awards and invites aren't necessary.

Gangie's Photos on Flickriver

Our AirBnB host had slipped a page into the guest book saying "My favorite place to stargaze in the desert is a plot of land out in the middle of Wonder Valley. I call it the Star Box. It's far from light pollution and you'll be all alone out there. Venmo $25 for access to the land. I do not take responsibility for nails or glass in tires. Arrive before sunset or you'll never find the place." The tire thing worried us, but we paid up, got the coords, and checked it out in daylight - soft sand road, but seemed fine. It was indeed magical - I hadn't seen a sky this big before - free of obstructions in every direction, ringed by distant mountains all the way around, a totally enveloping experience. I'd expected the temps to drop with nightfall, but a warm wind persisted. We ate pizza and watched the North Star appear, then watched as cosmos lit up. The downside of the location for astro photography is that there were no landmarks, so there's nothing to include (skies with stars and nothing else are boring). But we had fun doing some light painting in the desert while we waited for the full star show. Amazing evening.

It was a snowy day here, but very pleasant in the woods. There was no wind and the temperature was mild.

North Whitemud Trail, Edmonton, Alberta.

The boreal chickadee is less common than the black cap here in Fairbanks but still pretty numerous in the forest.

Tidal Bore Rafting

Feel the rush of riding waves that can be up to 4 metres (13 feet) high in a Zodiac boat as the power of the world’s highest tides in the Bay of Fundy turn the Shubenacadie River into a water roller coaster only found in Nova Scotia.

I was bored and took this photo ...

We were waiting at the tram stop. As usual we had to wait about 10 minutes for the next tram to come. So what to do .... just looking around .... :)

When travelling from Brisbane to Melbourne recently, we had an unexpected stop over in Sydney. Two hours to kill in a boring airport late at night is not on anyone's to-do list I'm sure. I decided to wonder around a bit to see if I could find anything marginally interesting to photograph. The body language of these fellow travellers says it all I think. I hope they also made it home at some point.

On Dec 27th and 28th I went to Votier's Flats in search of the American Dipper that had been reported. One of my friends had some very nice photos of it. Not me! I could not locate it. I really enjoyed getting out while the weather was still bearable. It is way too cold now!

Thanks for your visits and comments! They are greatly appreciated

Boreal Chickadee, Algonquin Provincial Park, Feb 23, 2017

The rain stopped and the fog lessened enough for me to get this shot of a boreal chickadee. A lifer for both Anne and me.

The oldest recorded Boreal Chickadee was at least 5 years, 4 months, when it was recaptured and rereleased during banding operations in Nova Scotia.

We woke early on Saturday morning to go visit my wife's brother and wife that live about 3 hours away. As we were getting ready to leave, I called my wife over to look at the grey jays flying around a cottonwood tree. She said, "that isn't a grey jay, that's a boreal owl." I didn't even see the owl sitting on the broken branch! Grabbed the camera and took a few photos before we had to leave. By the way, it was -35f when this photo was taken. The owl looked like it's feathers were fluffed up to keep warm. I really hope this is a sign of our spring and summer to come, fox, owls and who knows what else will visit our 5 acres! So far, I'm very hopeful!

The Boreal owl is about 9 inches tall, one of the smaller owls of Alaska. We have an owl box in our front yard, so we are hoping this owl and it's mate use our box for more little owls later this year.

Jasmine let me know what she thought of posing for this project. We have done several different takes inside and out before I found a colored subject that worked in a B & W without dressing Jasmine up:o)

It was a real treat to observe up to 3 Boreal Chickadees at once upon a recent visit to the Sax-Zim Bog area in northern Minnesota. This was likely the most time I'd invested in observing these hard to find "northern cousins" of our more common Black-capped Chickadee. Save for the far northern corners of some states, this bird is found mostly in Canada and Alaska. They are non-migratory, meaning they reside in the same area(s) despite the season.
