It takes 15 seconds to slice through the secondary fence at the U.S./Mexico border with a saw. It takes a bit longer to solder it back securely.

On September 9, 2010, Congresswoman Giffords met with National Guard troops who have volunteered to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border.

Giffords, who long has called for the deployment of Guard troops to Arizona, visited with soldiers training in Tucson and then saw them fulfill their mission on the border in Nogales. She was the first elected official from Arizona to meet with the newly deployed troops.

During her visit, she met with the assistant adjutant general-air of the Arizona National Guard and several hundred Guardsmen who are being trained at a Tucson facility for their border security mission, which is named Operation Copper Cactus.

The border checkpoint Alpha near Helmstedt was the largest and most important border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany. Due to its geographical location, the shortest land route between West Germany and West Berlin, most transit traffic to and from West Berlin was handled by this crossing. Most travel routes from West Germany to East Germany and Poland also used this crossing. The border crossing existed from 1945 to 1990

ITV Border's Sandy McCracken arrived at the cottage with cameraman Paul yesterday to film a short piece for the ITV programme "Border Life". The sun shone brightly and the Cruck Cottage looked fantastic following the recent repairs carried out to the thatched roof and having been freshly lime washed by our army of community volunteers.

Once again local residents came along to help us make this another "special" occasion, becoming the audience for the day. Interviews were given by Michael, Willie and Bill Lawson providing an insight into the Cruck Cottages past, present and future - they were excellent.

Our thanks to all those who once again gave their time to help us - it is, as always, greatly appreciated!

Jackson Square on the Roxbury/JP border, c.1960 (or less.) This is what the area looked like after they put the top back on after submerging the Stony Brook under the street. I was raised in this neighborhood. It was torn down, starting in 1966, to make way for the failed Southwest Corridor Project. Though less compelling than the West End or South End urban renewal projects of the 1950's and 60's, this was also a thriving, working neighborhood. Our block, from New Heath St. to Centre St. in Jackson Square, was still a predominately Italian block. Russo's market was the anchor. Run by the entire Russo family, mother, father, sister and brothers. The Napoli Tavern was next door. Ernesto DeAngelis (distant cousin) had a bread only bakery (Sicilian pizza, cheese only, on Fridays.) There were two Italian barbershops and a bodega run by two ancient, Italian ladies And of course the donut shop that took over the Kitchen Sets store, There was a Chinese hand laundry, A Cuban restaurant. A sign painter had a shop here. Jackson Square glass (still in business in HP, give them a call...) anchored the JP end of the block. There were two more taverns, Coyne's (where I shined my first shoe) They had free steamers on Friday's in the summer The House of Murphy was the other tavern, a notorious bookie joint, in its day.. We also had a liquor store for those who drank at home Like most Boston urban renewal projects of the past they were done under the guise of "slum clearing" As seen in my recent posts, it was nothing like that. These are images of what they really were like. Sadly, almost nothing in this photo is still here. Behind the All Saint's church (not seen in this picture) is the rectory of the church. It was the Dudley Estate prior to that. It sits in decay. This photo is from the BPL collection

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Americans can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. President Obama, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the United States and North America, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Obama, open this gate. Mr. Obama, tear down this wall!
