In the Western United States there were many cemeteries called Boot Hill. It was the place where gunfighters who “died with their boots on” were buried.
Hanging was justice reserved for murderers and rapists. Judges did not sentence a person to hang for horse theft, but when no justice was forthcoming, cowboys and vigilantes often lynched the perpetrator.

Silver boot charm on one of my wife's bracelets. Amazing how much detail there is in something so small, and briliant how the maker has captured the ruggedness of an old boot so effectively.

Fresh morning light shines upon Boot Arch after fresh snow blanketed the area the previous evening. Winter. It’s still winter right? No, of course it is not. We’re a few weeks into spring, but I had intended to post more winter pics before a certain world calamity took hold. Like the flick of a switch I reprioritized my life to put health and safety first. And with everything going on photography while on my mind just has faded away from the priorities. Planned and unplanned trips evaporated, uncertainty clouded all thought. My cameras have not left their bags. But, here’s a happy image from Thanksgiving weekend before the storm clouds rolled in over humanity. The Sierra Nevada are enveloped in fresh snow, and the brilliant white frozen water contrasts with the warm hued granite of the Alabama Hills. Boot Arch stands proud in front of Lone Pine Peak’s triangular summit. The air was calm. The silence was sublime. When we all emerge from the pandemic storm, the mountains will be there waiting for us to return. I cannot wait to get back. I sincerely hope you and your family are safe from this pandemic. Stay home, stay safe, and wash your hands.
