Bones
Me and a friend were walking along the river in Paris and we met some nice people, one of them voulenteered to take us to the illegal section of the catacombs which I have been wanting to do for a long time. I originally planned on going myself but after some research decided it was best not to for fear of getting lost and not really having the best time because of it. I have been doing "urban exporation" for a while now including underground tunnels in NYC, abandoned buildings in New Orleans and places all over the world. The catacombs has always been at the top of my list for places to see. Please if you decided to do this yourself I strongly suggest finding one of the many forums on the subject and trying to find someone to go down with.
Sun-bleached bones were most wonderful against the blue - that blue that will always be there as it is now after all man's destruction is finished.

From the Comic Book "mini" Series by Jeff Smith, the character is called the "Hooded One" with Fone Bone's face as a disguise.
This bone handled knife was discovered between the joist and gable wall of a stone house just outside of Kendal in Cumbria I was undertaking an architectural survey on. Architectural detailing in the house points to a 16th or 17th century origin, which probably relects the age of this knife. The blade, along with the scale type tang, is one piece of steel, the shape of the tang being taken up by the two scales of the bone handle. Note the five steel rivets used to secure the handle, now corroded like the blade. Between these, and extending towards the bulbous end of the handle, are pairs of decorative pins made from copper alloy. The bolster appears to be made from two separate pieces, presumably riveted together, or more likely forged onto the tang, but corrosion deposits make this difficult to ascertain, Xray being the answer. Of further interest is the shape of the blade, the point being rounded and pointing downwards. This last feature tells me this a domestic knife, not a weapon. The quality of the finish, along with the copper alloy pin decoration, point towards this being a personal item, probably the owner's general eating and carving knife in an age when forks were rarely seen, let alone used.
Further research points to this piece dating to around 1550 to 1625 with the blade possibly being a Dutch import. Watched The Lovely Bones just now. Well, not really the full movie, just the 40 minutes remaining, but I'll watch the full movie later. I gotta tell ya, it's one hell of an emotional movie. It was so realistic, that I felt like I wanted to go find the killer and actually kill him myself. Such monstrous killings.
Even though I just watched half of the movie, I could understand it. 5 out of 5 stars (Y) Although I was hoping for the killer to get caught in the end, but him being dead is good enough for me.
The picture above is my brother playing golf. Well, not really playing, he just took his golf club and a rock. He was bored, what can I tell you? LOL :P

no matter where you're from, you just can't hide it
This summer and autumn, whenever I saw cheap stew bones at the lousy Price Chopper where I do my grocery shopping, I grabbed them and squirreled them away in my freezer. Now that it's December, I don't mind running my stove all day, so this afternoon I roasted them up, and tomorrow I'll make stock.
Followup -- the end yield was about 23 cups of stock, or about five and a half liters. Really great body to it: after refrigeration and final skimming, it was almost like aspic. Not much of a subject for another photograph, though, just a bunch of plastic containers of tan liquid. Might go one step further with a portion of the stock and make demi-glace, but until then it'll keep fine in the freezer.
