2001 was the third year that Pulaski, Tennessee went on the Trail of the Tattle Bogles...a delightful fall scarecrow contest, that has become a tradition in this town. It's so much fun to see the creativity that the local townspeople put into creating and displaying these Tattie Bogles. There was no theme this year, everyone was free to use their own imagination to come up with these interesting characters.

I don't usually post so many pictures at a time, but when these scarecrows come out, I just have to post them all at once! It seems to be a tradition for me to photograph these, and I look forward to it. I almost missed this year, as I've been on the road. They were put up while I was away, and the first day I was home it was raining on them! Luckily, most of them stayed together...and I had a chance to get my camera, and find as many as I could. I'm posting the link to the slideshow, so you can stroll around this little town, and follow the Trail of the Tattie Bogles if you have a few minutes. I hope you enjoy them!

This one also fits this weeks theme: Words. I actually took most of these pictures a day early, so I had to go back to town to get an image for the right date. I was glad I did, because I found a few more of these!

2010 Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon

Central Coast, California

Price: $12.99

Bogle winemakers have crafted an expressive example of this classic varietal. Richly extracted cherry and cassis arrest the senses, holding captive on both the nose and the palate. Swiftly followed by black pepper and black olive, the supple mouthfeel fills out this full-bodied wine. Spicy American oak heightens the dense fruit, finishing with wisps of ground pepper and stellar tannins. Cellar for another 7-10 years, but don't let anyone say you can't enjoy it now.

This well-balanced red wine can be savored with a variety of meat dishes, rich sauces or aged cheeses. Try a rib eye with blue cheese butter.

This poster is dedicated to the Jamaican dancer Bogle, Father Bogle, Mr Wacky, and all the Urban street dancers of Kingston Jamaica.

Bogle was called the "Dancehall Master" and was best known for his dancing. He had the ability to seemingly create dances without effort and his dances would become extremely popular. Creator of the Willie Bounce (named after Bogle's friend and Black Roses Crew member Willie Haggart), Wacky Dip, Urkle Dance, Sesame Street, Bogle Dance, Pelper, LOY [2], Jerry Springer, Zip It Up, Hotti Hotti Bogle, World Dance, Pop Yuh Collar, Row di Boat, Out and Bad, Sweeper, Stuckie[citation needed], and many other popular dances. He was also in Belly.

In the 1990s, Levy created the Bogle Dance, the scene's first crossover dance move. He was also a major influence on breakout artists such as Elephant Man and Beenie Man, who gave shout-outs to Levy in songs like "Row Like a Boat": "Seh Mr. Bogle have di brand new style/Come get di style, come get di style."

On January 20, 2005 Bogle was killed by gunmen in Kingston Jamaica. Bogle lives on throughout the dancehall community as Jamaica's greatest dancer of all time

I met Bogle in Trench Town which is a poor, underdeveloped neighbourhood in Kingston. I was there for some personal projects between the Old Age home & the Reading Centre. I bumped into Bogle while at the latter.

Yallery Brown

I thought I heard a sobbing child –

A baby left behind

With none to sing his lullabies

But crows and wailing wind.

I looked for him beneath the hedge,

I looked amongst the moss;

I sought him in the drainage ditch

And by the wayside cross.

“A stone! A stone!” I heard him cry – embedded in the ground:

I raised it sucking from the mools, and there lay Yallery Brown.

No bigger than a year-old brat

With cotted hair and beard

All wrapped about him like a shroud,

And yellow as good mead,

His face was solid wrinkles

And his eyes were berry-black,

And down his silken, knotted locks

The tears ran hot and slick.

“Thou’st a good lad!” His twittering voice: a piping little sound

Like a sparrow’s. Then he said, “Well met. I’m Yallery Brown.”

“Wilt hev’ a wife? A’ll give tha one:

The rampinist lass i’ town!

Wilt be rich? A’ll give thee gould:

‘S much as man may own.”

But I was brash and foolish then;

I waved such thoughts away:

“Oh Yallery Brown, I’d rather be

Bone idle every day.”

“A wa'ant no tha'anks, a 'll hev no tha'anks,” the boggart stamped and frowned,

Ef iver tha’s in need o’ he'p, jist call on 'Yallery Brown.”

Then he picked a dandelion –

He puffed it and was gone –

But when I got back to the farm

The threshing was all done.

That’s when things went arsy-varsy:

The jobs he did for me

He undid for the other lads:

‘Twas a shambles for to see:

Tools a-blunted, crops a-spoiled, ditches clogged to drown

The seedlings sprouting from the drills – because of Yallery Brown.

“Yallery Brown, Yallery Brown!

Go and serve some other!

I’ll never need your help again!

I’d thank thee not to bother!”

"Ho, ho, Tom! Thoust tha'anked me, lad;

Thar’s no way t’ atone!

A'll niver he'p thee e’er ag'ean,

An’ niver leave thee alo'an!”

Now I am worn with poverty, rejected and cast down;

I have no woman, work nor gold, thanks to Yallery Brown.

U.S. Army Africa chef earns top honors in culinary competition

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Africa

VICENZA, Italy – When Sgt. Ken Turman drizzled thickened meat juice around a plate of herb pork tenderloin crepinette, he was putting the finishing touches on an entrée that would take top honors at the 35th U.S. Army Culinary Arts Competition.

Turman, a U.S. Army Africa chef who works at Caserma Ederle’s South of the Alps dining facility, served as team captain for U.S. Army Europe’s team during the March 12 competition at Fort Lee, Va.

“Sgt. Turman's performance at the competition was exemplary,” said Maj. L. Trice Burkes, commander of Headquarters Support Company, U.S. Army Africa. “His accolades clearly represent years of commitment to the culinary field. We’re honored to have such an NCO among our ranks.”

Overall, the USARUER team earned 22 gold, nine silver and five bronze awards. The military chefs also earned the top team prize, the Installation of the Year award. It’s the first time since 1992 that a USAREUR team received the title. The USAREUR team also won the best team buffet table award.

“Sgt. Turman showed a keen ability to grasp advanced cookery skills and methods along with understanding the requirements of the rules established for the culinary competition, enabling him to be quite successful,” said Sgt. Maj. Mark Warren, from USAREUR’s logistics directorate, who managed the team.

The meal that won gold for the team included an appetizer of seared salmon on a bed of tagliatelle vegetables, served with a citrus wine cream sauce and tomatoes concasse. The main dish included the herb pork tenderloin crepinette and braised pork belly with savory crimini mushroom bread pudding, plus carrot and ginger puree served with pearl onions, peas and creamed Savoy cabbage. The natural jus-lie – thickened meat sauce – was the final touch.

Following the entrée was a desert of streusel-baked apple with mascarpone cream filling, pistachio sponge cake with raspberry cream and chocolate décor served with warm apples and raspberries in vanilla syrup with lemon.

Turman also served as captain of the student skills team. He received a silver medal in the senior chef of the year category and took gold in both the nutritional hot food challenge and in live hot food cooking. Turman was also selected to represent the Army during the Culinary Olympics World Cup this November in Luxembourg.

Warren is encouraged to see younger chefs like Turman develop skills and study the finer points of cookery, he said.

“I would expect to see great achievements and advancement in his future,” Warren said.

About the artist:

"Collin Bogle has created an international following for his strikingly realistic wildlife and floral images.

The son of a renowned American artist, Collin learned the concepts of technique, composition and design from his father, later refining his skills and setting out on his own artistic path. His remarkable ability to capture detail and to master the use of light in natural settings became hallmarks of his work. "Light plays a major role in my work," states the artist. "An abundance of light and shadows creates a playground for me, and allows a painting to take on a life of its own."
