The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne in England between Gateshead's Quays arts quarter on the south bank, and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. Opened for public use in 2001, the award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architect Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineer Gifford. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the 'Blinking Eye Bridge' or the 'Winking Eye Bridge' due to its shape and its tilting method.

In an age when villages ten times the size of this have lost all their public amenities, the characterful Blinking Owl is a very rare survivor indeed.
Packed to popping with 'stuff' and all the better for it, the pub is run as a sort of living room full of strangers by the owners.
A squashy sofa, nooks and crannies, an amazing inglenook fireplace and an unapologetic display of knickknacks and a wonderfully inclusive atmosphere, well, can I say more?
As it is a sort of extension of the owners living room, opening hours can just occasionally be a bit wayward.
A combination of light pollution from flaring gas wells, blinking wind towers, Cheyenne and a growing lightning storm conspired to give this scene a decidedly Mordor vibe. You can see a Perseid meteor right of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and a possible Iridium flare directly below it. This was taken after the peak of last year's Persied event.
Image Notes: This image is a composite of multiple frames taken over roughly 45 minutes from the same location. Three separate shots captured the lightning, two for the meteor and flare, one for sky and one for lighter foreground. Most of the warmer points of light on the horizon are gas being flared off oil wells that don't have the infrastructure to utilize the gas. The red lights are wind towers and of course the glowing clouds are from lightning.
We have a wild Burrowing Owls nest right near my home. I stopped in yesterday to say hi.
They are tiny. This guy is probably less than 5 inches tall!

Got up this morning to the sound of crows making a great racket which usually means that there's an eagle or hawk around. When we left for a walk in the park we saw this guy in a tree in front of our place. He was pretty high up with only a small window through foliage so we couldn't get a good angle but we did manage a few shots (in most he appeared asleep) . The crows harassed him all day until his departure around 9pm.

This is a shot of the Millennium Bridge, also known as the blinking eye, crossing the river Tyne from Newcastle to Gateshead. I had to act quick to get this shot as I saw the clean up boat pass me and wanted to get the wake from the boat crashing against the stone steps that lead down to the river. You can see the boat under the bridge in the distance. This boat has an on board crane that lifts trees out of the river. The Tyne has had quite a number of trees in it lately because of the bad weather and the fact that it is fast approaching winter.
I don't think I'd ever seen a young Rook before living here, Rooks were fairly rare in our previous local area.

We had rain for 3 days and today for the first time we had some sun. But it was short lived. It is now raining hard with lots of wind, thunder and lightning. Our lights are also blinking off and on.
There are a few reasonable excuses for stowing things in boxes, I suppose. Admittedly, I make several most excellent explanations and often quickly without blinking an eye as to why it is important to save things. Recent moves, clothing that no longer fits but might next year, the death of a loved one, cleaning and organizing no longer wanted items to mention a few. Does every home have a particular place in which these boxes migrate? You know the place to which I am referring; the basement, the area of the entry closet that now expands its birth by three in which there is no more extended room for coats. What about the garage?
Some say, "keep that you will want it one day."
Others say, "give that away, better yet, throw that away!"
I've spent the better part of the last twenty years in and never completely out of boxes. It's true. One move follows another like dominoes tumbling over just to be propped up once more merely to do it again; what an enormous waste of time, money, and energy. In retrospect, it makes no sense.
In my defense and the defense of others afflicted with unsafe keeping, it was never an intended extension of remaining trapped in and by the boxes. As a hopeful human, always optimistic, the chore of unpacking everything has remained the goal. Again; the excuses, in the form of defensive measures this time, insidious but easily unwrapped themselves to defend the box brigade. See how they slithered in again?
In considering something for The Lightbulb Project, I took much time to narrow down a personal wish for the theme, freedom. For me, freedom would be to unpack absolutely everything from every single box and gift it forward or throw the things away. The boxes have become a burden, a source of sadness. A reminder that life in a box is never the way in which we are intended to exist. It's not living. It's in limbo. Trapped, stifled, growing old without movement or use is a debilitating state for not only humans but also material things.
Freedom, in the form of unpacking once and for all, would be a generous gift from myself to myself. I know it. Now, to get it done.
