False-color narrowband composite of NGC 6826 taken by Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera II instrument in December of 2007.
NGC 6826 is located in the constellation of Cygnus and is referred to as the "Blinking Planetary". Through a small telescope, the brightness of the central star in the nebula will overwhelm the much fainter surrounding nebula. Use of averted vision will cause the nebula to appear to "blink" in and out of view.
A characteristic of this nebula are fast moving jets of gas known as Fast Low-Ionization Emission Regions, or FLIERs, highlighted in red here. These jets of material move much faster than the surrounding nebula, indicating that they are much younger than the nebula itself.
Processing Details:
Narrowband bicolor composite of Hydrogen Alpha (Hα) and Doubly Ionized Oxygen (O-III) filter images. Images assigned to a HOO palette. With Hα assigned to the red channel and O-III assigned to the blue and green channels. Resulting image closely approximates natural color in nebulae, though it does tend to throw star colors off.
Filters Used:
O-III: WFPC2 - F502N
Hα: WFPC2 - F658N

What's the odds of blinking in two of the images at the wrong time? By the time I got to the last shot... if looks could kill, I'd be dead on the spot.
The triplets were three separate images taken manually, in fairly quick succession (no motor drive, or whatever it's called these days). Then stacked and blended in Photoshop.
Not a part of the animals on exhibition at the Copenhagen Zoo, but flew in to try to steal some food from the otters. This gave me the chance to get some nice closeups - but this one of the heron blinking was the most interesting!
NGC 6826 (also known as Caldwell 15) is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Cygnus at a distance of roughly 2,000 light years. It is commonly referred to as the "blinking planetary", although many other nebulae exhibit such "blinking".
When viewed through a small telescope, the brightness of the central star overwhelms the eye when viewed directly, obscuring the surrounding nebula.
However, it can be viewed well using averted vision, which causes it to "blink" in and out of view as the observer's eye wanders.
Interestingly, the Blinking Planetary nebula exhibits two jets of ionized material known as Fast Low-Ionization Emission Regions, or FLIERS. They appear to be relatively young, moving outwards at supersonic speeds. I was quite surprised to find that I captured those FLIERs in my image, taken last night at the Loowit Imaging Observatory.
Captured with a 10-inch Meade LX200 and a Nikon D5500 DSLR.
10x10-second and 45x30-second captures at ISO1600, stacked in Deep Sky Stacker, then post-processed in Adobe Photoshop CS6, with final adjustments performed and final export executed in Adobe Lightroom 6.

CREATE!!! Inspired by the "red lights of home," the stunning blinking red lights on the wind turbines that shine at night over Desert Hot Springs, my "grandson" Danny asked me to make him a Perler Bead bracelet to remind him of the times we returned home at night to DHS after a long day in LA. I found some translucent red beads with glitter in them and so, when the bracelet is held up to the light, it looks a lot like the brilliant lights of home.
I could not find a really adequate picture of the windmill lights- the first picture is a detail from a Flickr picture by photographer Michelle C. Torres-Grant, taken from the hills of DHS looking out toward Palm Springs.
Framed Wreath Decor is a new product made with lots of love for those who love the warm touch of wood and flowers in their house. The wreath comes with blinking lights between the rich foliage (watch it in action on the short clip included) that come on and off with just a click. The HUD offers you 5 options for the wooden background to choose from to ensure it will match with your decoration's colour palette. It can be used as a Christmas decor or simply as an all season statement piece on your wall. Resizable.

I captured 60 minutes of data trying to find the James Webb Space Telescope using positional data obtained from TheSkyLive (theskylive.com/where-is-jwst). This video shows the movement of the JWST over that 60 minute timeframe on March 9, 2023. The JWST is currently located in the constellation Leo. The blinking from magnitude 17 to 15 was caused by the JWST slewing to a new target during my observation.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge or (Blinking Eye) is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne.
The Tyne can be found running between Newcastle upon Tyne, and Gateshead, Northeast England.
The award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineers Gifford.
To the left of the Bridge sits the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. Both can be found in Gateshead Tyne and Wear, England.

The bulb swings gently above his head. His shadow shifts.
“At least gimme a room with a window!” he yells, giving the door a final bang.
The door gently opens into the cell. He steps back blinking back the tears. He breaks down, slamming his fist on the wall built behind the doorway.

The Planetary Nebula, NGC 6826, is small (less than half an arcminute) with a reasonably bright magnitude 10.6 central star. When looking directly at it in a small telescope the star can overwhelm the much dimmer nebula. The nebula proper, is more apparent when one views it from an angle. This is do to the arrangement of the rods and cones in the human eye. The nebula can appear and disappear depending on where the eye is looking in the eyepiece – thus the common name of the Blinking Planetary.
Having said that, NGC 6826, is not that hard to see, especially if you add some magnification (remember it is small). I do not find it necessary to use a narrowband nebula filter even when viewing it from the light-polluted suburbs. Through the 6-inch refractor at 243x the nebula no longer blinks even when looking directly at it.
The stunning blue-green color of the nebula with the bright-white central star is a breath-taking sight.

Note to America (An Angelic Prospectus) {James Watkins}
He’s listened to you long enough,
Let you have your say-
Hunkered down in dreary towns,
Free-falling in the fray.
Some things don’t matter any more-
It’s plain enough to see,
Some things are very simple,
They happen….naturally.
Independence indigence,
Insurrection-on-
Spiritual insanity,
Delusion on the throne.
Continental congress,
Covenant complete-
Freedom found
From captive crown,
Taxation by defeat.
Won in war by warrior
Bowed behind the scene,
Governmental grannies
Gassed and running lean.
Sequential celebration
Leaning to the right,
Took the town
To middle ground
Then sweetened up the fight.
Promise within promises,
Permanence in peace,
Stolen blind
By kindred minds
In national retreat.
God is gone,
Like Gustov’s ghost
On graduated ground-
Ridden rampant on a rail,
Run right out of town.
Religion’s rotting refuse,
Educated zeal,
Baby and bathwater,
Thrown out
By window seal.
Agreement by convenience,
The triad is complete-
The church, the crown,
The golden ground,
Professionals at least.
Garish, gloating, gatherings,
Temperamental tasks-
Tarnished targets
Tempting time with
Brutal baby blasts.
Fallen fronts,
Forensic flash,
Fine and faker fast-
Foul and festering
Filthy freight,
Fleeing from the past.
Happy hoppy horn toad,
Captain of the world-
No feral fear,
Calm crystal queer-
Call every boy and girl.
Mother’s mayhem
Adam’s aunt,
Gone completely mad-
Tried-on,
Tricked-up trousers
Tenderized a tad.
Evening ever-afters,
Happy once again-
Haunted house,
Forget the mouse,
“Egad”
The men are dead.
Lovely Lucys laughing,
Controlling interest lair,
The lion is dead,
So go to bed-
Don’t bother with the bear.
Fashion fledgling,
Faded farce,
Fractured flaky foe-
Disneyed duckling
Drawn and daft,
Domesticated woe.
Fricasseed and
Freezer freed,
Stolen by the mole-
Galloping,
The gourmet ran
Grimly to the goal.
Down and distance
Delicate,
Don’t do the
Dirty Dan.
Playmate pawns
Now petrified,
Passed on by
Peter Pan.
Willful,
Wicked wonders-
Empty and petite-
Cover blown,
Refused by phone-
Destined for defeat.
Sayonara Sonya-
Cronkite caught a cold-
While Willy Wonka
Whacked a weed,
Then headed down
The road.
Christ like crucifixions,
Criminal and crass,
Crippled captains
Carcassed cold,
Middle-eastern mass.
Choose to tremble,
Choose to cheat,
Choose whom you will serve-
Choose to conquer,
Or..Choose defeat-
The quintessential blurb.
Honing hackers
Headed home,
Hackensackin fools,
Round and round
To tumble down-
With detrimental tools.
Hemispheric hovering-
Contract incomplete-
Pioneered truth
By blazered brute,
Confused by
Quiet elite.
It’s given best,
To those who rest,
In reverential form.
With wealth well cast
To traveler who’s sheltered
From the storm.
Retreat is not an option-
At long last life is spent-
Though living in
And impact zone
Is hardly worth the rent.
Revolution ready-
Armed and graveled green-
No average addled army,
To slay this brazen queen.
Unseen worded Warrior-
Wondrous to behold-
Breastplate bronzed
And burnished-
Countenance so bold.
Dispatched in dog-ged duty,
Determined and complete-
To fight with fire and fury,
Till victory’s at his feet!

Nerio Yoshikawa: "I"m taking care of River now" *He piped up, finally* coming out of his coma stare.
Niyol Clawtooth: He would whisper back to Dmitry His head turns to his father and tilts his head blinking. His mouth moves as if to ask since when... but keeps his lips shut.
Ciro Bianchi (Rein) muttered, his voice muffled by both air filter and then skimask, though the throat mic picked it up clearly.
Archer Braun hunkers down, hiking up his tool belt and reaching for his set of keys. He twists the lock, popping open the access panel and stares inside at the ruin of smoking components. "Fuck," he grumbles, reaching for a pair of wire cutters and hunching over even further.
Leigh Parx (Kayleigh Jigsaw) blinked slightly and shifted her gaze in the direction of River's name. An eyebrow rose slightly as she shifted her attention slightly more focused on concern for a certain rugrat than any issue the marines might cause.
Tristaniel McMinnar glances back to the two behind him, then back inside. He stares coldly at Dmi before, with a tilt of his head, he signals to the others to move on.
Dmitry Luminos also reacts with a bit of surprise at Nerio's remark, and is about to say something probably disagreeable, before he notices the Marines start to move. He lowers himself slightly, hands sweating, but then sighs and stands up fully as the UAC troops move onwards. His right hand moves away from his pistol grip. "River's -got- people taking care of him," he says. "People who don't hurt him."
Nerio Yoshikawa sat there calmly, since his brother couldn't care for him anymore, he fell under the care of the Yakuza by request. He stares at the little girl now, not liking hearing that there were people trying to hurt her, his hand reaching to his jacket to pull out his PDA again, he taps away at it, idly, noting Dmitry saying he had business with the pussy Hounds. He'd snort to that if he cared any. At Dmitry's outburst...it's simply ignored....for now*
Archer Braun's hands are busy, he pulls smouldering circult boards from the panel with insulate pliers and drops them on the pavement. Finishing that, he reaches behind him for fresh components and slots them in the panel. Flicking at a switch with his thumb, he grunts in satisfaction as, one-by-one, the boards light up green...and the distant sound of air conditioning units kick on from above. Shaking his head, he closes the access panel and locks it, picking up the rubbish and staring at it a moment before moving down the alley.
Jaina Lefevre isn't moving until she's told the coast is clear. She glances up at Dmi. "River's my friend. He sleeps at my house sometimes." She is trembling against Niyol for all that she's doing her best to continue with a conversation. Enpeesee moves to the doorway to watch a bit longer.
Leigh Parx (Kayleigh Jigsaw) narrowed her eyes very slightly as she nodded to Nick and pulled some credits from her pocket to pay him for the food now. She looked at the plate he set in front of her and settled to eating. The actions were more mechanical than seeming to be something she actually wanted to be doing right now. She kept her ears and eyes open, though. Finding a job later today would be her highest priority from the sounds of it.
Dmitry Luminos nods. "That's good," he replies. "Your moms are pretty cool." To Niyol he turns, crossing his arms and waiting to see if he'll be allowed to come along.
Niyol Clawtooth: He looks up to his Pa. "Pa can i run along and hang for a bit with some of my friends?" He smiles. He gives Jaina a small squeeze. "Its okay, they look like they're gone now."
Jaina Lefevre turns and looks, then lets out a breath. "Cool. Thanks." She scrubs at her face and looks up at Dmi and Niyol. "I can show you the hideout if ya want."
Nerio Yoshikawa looked over at Dmitry as he mentioned friends. Every parent knew a 'friend' their kid had that they hated. He stood and started to move towards Dmitry before he stopped. Damn he wanted to slice the little bastard up. The look on his face would be that very look too, like he really wanted to gut the boy, "Sure..have fun with your friends, son" *His face hardened as he spoke, voice going to a very omenous tone as if there was a bit more in that sentence than what he actually said*
Leigh Parx (Kayleigh Jigsaw) continued to eat. She kept an eye on the group across the way from the corner of her eye, but for the most part she seemed utterly intent on eating the food that had been placed before her.
Jaina Lefevre watches Nerio's face change yet again. It was like watching clouds skitter across the sky on a day that can't decide if it's sunny or hurricane weather. She swallows audibly and chokes a little as she asks. "Mister Nerio? Is it okay if'n I hang out with Niyol? You won't get mad at me, huh?"
Hideo Inaka pokes his head into Madre's, looking around, seeing if Nerio and Niyol were still here like Auntie had said. Seeing Nerio's tall form, he moves into the place further, crossing over and bowing when he gets close. "Konnichiwa, Oyabun Yoshikawa, Niyol-san."
Dmitry Luminos does not catch Nerio's look, as he's specifically avoiding eye contact. He looks from Niyol to Jaina and back. "Well that's it, then," he says. He looks down to Jaina. "So what's this hideout, then?"
Niyol Clawtooth: He would release Jaina as he saw that predatory look in his father's gaze. His lips press and he tries to slide himself between Nerio and Dmitry, moving to try and hug his father. "Thanks Pa. I'll call later ok" He smiles attempting both to distract his father from the urge to kill his friend and take the allowance to go hang before his father changed his mind.
Nerio Yoshikawa looked down at Jaina, "I won't get angry if you hang out with my son, no." *he went to pat her on the head then looked at Dmitry. He decided he needed to drive his message home then since the kid suddenly couldn't look at him, his form moved right into his space. He hovered there and looked at Niyol. He still didn't like what had happened, Niyol paid for this but Dmitry hadn't. He watched his son as if wanting to know how much the kid meant to him...really. He doesn't say anything to Hideo yet..he was obviously busy, putting away in his mind to remind Hideo to wait to see if he's interupting things before speaking. As Niyol gets in between him and Dmitry, he looked down at him with a sneer. Niyol was right, he wanted to kill the mouthy kid.
Jaina Lefevre smiles at Nerio and then tries to grab Dmi's hand. "Come on, I'll show you. " She starts for the exit. Yep...exit strategy.
Dmitry Luminos grins and snickers as Jaina tugs at his hand, pulling him along toward the door. His grin remains as he glances up at Nerio - briefly - and then at the newly arrived Hideo. "Kids!" he says, shaking his head as if he's some old uncle or something. In the brief moment he does see Nerio's eyes he does pick up at least the idea that Nerio doesn't like him very much; he wrestles with the idea of whether or not to antagonize him, but the fact that he's Niyol's father - and, well, those two calibers under Nerio's shoulders - dissuades him. He follows Jaina's lead out of the restaurant.
Niyol Clawtooth: He wouldn't look up or challenge his father. His arms would slowly lower once Dmitry and Jaina skurried around him. He speaks in italian, given the setting he finds it appropriate.
Nerio Yoshikawa: *Was probably a good idea that Dmitry didn't antagonize him. Even without the guns, he'd still put the kid through a wall. Dmitry not fearing him would be his own foolishness later on if he did so much as sneeze wrong in Nerio's direction from now on..unless he did the right thing and apologized..which the kid seemed too arrogant to think of doing. He responds in Italian* "He disrespects me or speaks out of turn to me again in public..he's going to end up in the Black Star canal..he has NO respect..the only reason he's alive right now is cause of you" *With that he stepped aside, he was seething his son hung out with him*
Jaina Lefevre tugged Dmi outside and whispered. "He looked like he was gonna eat your face. You should be -really- nice to people that can do that y'know." She glances back over inside to see Niyol, waiting for him before leading them down the alley.
Niyol Clawtooth: He nods respectfully to his father, and then bows deeply. "Thank you Pa. May I go?"
Hideo Inaka watches the other kids scuttle off, his eyes marking the one kid who always seems like such a disrespectful brat. He turns his gaze back to Nerio, then looks at Niyol. "You are doing better, Niyol-san?"
Leigh Parx (Kayleigh Jigsaw) continues eating slowly finishing the food on her plate. She took a deep breath before sipping her soda quietly and replaying this morning's lessons in her mind working on figuring out where improvement and further practice was needed and where something more advanced would be appropriate.
Niyol Clawtooth: He would give a nod to the question to Hideo but kept his gaze on his father.
Nerio Yoshikawa: 'Hai" *he then moved to Hideo and started to leave out the side, "We have work to do" *he said as he passed the man*
Hideo Inaka gives Niyol a nod then turns to follow Nerio
Dmitry Luminos nods to Jaina's advice. "You're smarter than I am, I think." He looks up, also waiting for Niyol.
Niyol Clawtooth: His eyes would center on Dmitry as he rounded the corner. "Lets get out of here before he changes his mind. "
Dmitry Luminos nods silently and waits for Jaina to lead.
Pope Francis waving and blinking
Blaj, Romania, 2019
This was a difficult one, there were around 50 smartphones in front of my camera waving all around. It's the only photo where I managed to get the Pope in focus from about 20 or so.
As usual, the Pope gave a good speech, even if it was quite a short one. A great experience for me.
