"Tug" a top pilot with the 142nd FW here in Portland had his last romp as an Eagle Driver. In true Redhawk fashion he went out in a blaze of glory starting with a unrestricted afterburner climb and ending in a magnificent midfield two ship break and a perfectly executed greaser. Thanks for your service Tug I am sure the skies over the great NW will not be the same without you!

Eurasian eagle-owl.
The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl that resides in much of Eurasia. It is sometimes called the European eagle-owl and is, in Europe, where it is the only member of its genus besides the snowy owl (B. scandiacus), occasionally abbreviated to just eagle-owl. It is one of the largest species of owl, and females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), males being slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts, with upper parts that are mottled with darker blackish colouring and tawny and the wings and tail are barred. The underparts are a variably hued buff, streaked with darker colour. The facial disc is poorly developed and the orange eyes are distinctive.

Blaze it: Powell's Creek, located in Leesylvania State Park, is a GREAT place to watch trains. The other morning, I woke up at 0500, grabbed a coffee, and headed out to catch the morning rush on CSXT's RF&P subdivision. This is home rails for me, the northern main runs about 2 blocks from our apartment, and I have really grown to like working this line. The allure of getting up early is Amtrak's auto train: if they're on time, they're usually into Lorton around 0900, making Powell's an ideal spot to shoot them. The morning cloud cover challenged me to forego the classic bridge shot, and think of something different, a hallmark of my good buddy Dave Blaze. As I heard the engineer call P052 clear of Powell's, I thought "this is the blaziest thing I have done in a while." And so here we are from a fine sunday morning on the RF&P, as Amtrak's northbound auto train cruises northbound through the gorgeous scenery of the RF&P sub, almost home to Lorton.

From the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe the sun had just set behind a bank of clouds when for less than a minute the light shone from underneath the clouds creating a very unusual glow of purple/lavender, blue, red and yellow. This is a cropped in long exposure zoom shot across the lake (yes, it’s about 17 miles across) and the zoom/crop adds its own unreality to the shot.
DARE you see a soul at the white heat?
Then crouch within the door.
Red is the fire’s common tint;
But when the vivid ore
Has sated flame’s conditions,
Its quivering substance plays
Without a color but the light
Of unanointed blaze...
