In Japan, koi symbolizes many good qualities. Known to swim against the current and overcome great obstacles (as mentioned in an old saying described below), koi symbolize strength, courage, patience, and success through perseverance. As koi can grow very large and live a long life, they have become a symbol of prosperity and good luck. Their slow, graceful movements also symbolize peace and tranquility. If there is a pond in a Japanese garden, chances are, you will also find koi. Japanese gardens are often found close to or within temples and palaces, also very auspicious places. Koi may very well have been kept close to these places as a good luck charm or to ensure the success of those who visit.

The first test (over 2 threads on a much tighter weave) as compared to the finished piece (over 3 threads).
The pieces were put on my scanner side by side, so the scale is correct.
I love this piece. It's very intricate but also fairly easy once you get into the swing of it. The topiary trees are a favourite part of it for me.

Tattoo by Denise de la Cerda. Based on a famous print of Jesus where the eyes appear suddenly to "open" if you stare directly at them long enough. Tattoo done at Modern Electric in Jersey City, NJ, not later than 2003. Wearer unknown.
My nephew discovered Star Trek big-time this past year, so I decided I wanted to stitch an ornament that fit :) I used the outline charted by *black-lupin on deviantart and blackwork filling stitches from a couple of sources. Stitched on antique white 18-ct. aida. Started 7/24/2010, completed 7/25/2010.

For the a-r people (like me) who always want to see the backs of work. Most of these patterns could be reversible, but I've chosen the sturdiness of backstitch over the wow factor of Holbein and reversibility - since this item is meant to be displayed, it will get dusty and need to be washed several times a year.

tudor-era woman's shift,front view. Black on white cotton, original pattern. The neckline and cuffs are attached to their 4th "body"; this was the first blackwork I ever did.
Back in late 2011, I "designed" three blackwork ornaments. I only finished the blue snowflake that year, although I did get through about half of a red/green ornament before I set it aside to work on other projects. 3 1/2 years later, I finally picked it back up this morning and finished it tonight :) The fibers are a mix of overdyes (WDW, GAST & Threadworx) on what appears to be antique white evenweave (but I no longer remember exactly which evenweave). All three of my "snowflakes" were inspired by blackwork designs by Elizabeth Almond and Kell Smurthwaite, but I varied the outline and fill stitches to my own tastes. 4-24-2015
