I had already planned to stop along Big Oak Flat Road to try for some shots of the decimated hills left behind after last year's Foresta fire. An early winter storm was moving over the Sierras that morning, and that's what you see here. What was so striking to me was the way the clouds of fog so resembled smoke from a fire, much as this scene must have looked as the fire waned.

ODC ~BLACK TREES 14 - 20 Jan

First off, if this seems complicated, it's because IT IS. The makers of geektool never promised otherwise (for now). Hopefully these notes will enlighten you a bit.

This is the most difficult part to get right. My advice is to follow this guy's guide: www.macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16801674&p=1

WEATHER CONDITIONS (must be personalised)

curl --silent "http://weather.yahooapis.com/forecastrss?p=CAXX0236&u=c" | grep -E '(Current Conditions:|C<BR)' | tail -n1 | sed -e 's///' -e 's/ C$/˚C/'

Simply replace

CAXX0236&u=c

with your own city's address

***The final letter c in "CAXX0236&u=c" refers to celsius, so replacing it to the letter"f" makes it fahrenheit

HOW TO:

- go to : weather.yahoo.com/

- find your city's weather page by searching it

- click on the rss feed button (it's orange and says RSS...)

- the last part of the webpage's address is what you need to replace my own code above

WEATHER IMAGE FETCHER (must be personalized)

create an empty shell with this code:

curl --silent -o /tmp/weather.html ca.weather.yahoo.com/canada/quebec/longueuil-4388/;

Refresh rate: 600

*Fetches image from yahoo server and store it locally.*

The menu bar was changed to black thanks to: lifehacker.com/#!5280456/hide-your-mac-menu-bar-and-dock-...

I've also made the menu bar auto-hide (somewhat hit&miss depending on the app) thanks to magic menu: www.cynosurex.com/Software/MagicMenu/

**don't use with apps that need to connect to your keychain as magic menu breaks the link, you can go back on this though.

Thankfully, the weather helped me catch some "black trees" - taken from my garden looking towards our local church.

Our Daily Challenge ~ Black Trees ....

Thanks to everyone who views this photo, adds a note, leaves a comment and of course BIG thanks to anyone who chooses to favourite my photo .... thanks to you all.

"Forest Fire Sunrise" by Patti Deters. Smoke from Canada forest fires color the sky bright vivid orange as seen in this foggy sunrise near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, USA. The tree line is in silhouette, framing the rising sun. The weather was misty and damp which added to the stunning effect of this simple and minimalistic wildfire scene. Blue mountains bounces back after fires in late 2013

Found this 'old' picture from November '18 and still wanted to share it.

We have had clouds for 5+ days and rain off & on. Finally a chance to take a "black tree" (silhouetted" shot. The naked tree trunk has been standing for many years. Not sure if lightening or a wind storm caused the branches to fall off. But i like the effect for the shot.

I've been tidying up my laptop over the last couple of days (backup routines, links between different computers, etc) to try and simplify everything as much as possible. In the process I came across some great applications, like Quicksilver. If you don't know about it and you use a Mac, then please take a look.

I'm also trying to breathe some life in to my tumblr blog so I'll add something there soon about all the different things I found. You never know, you might find something that's of interest to you too!

It is true that Nature can be beautifully monochromatic.

Two rare reptile species native to two delicate island ecosystems—the black tree monitor, native to the Aru Islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea; and the mossy leaf-tailed gecko, native to Madagascar—are now thriving at the San Diego Zoo. The latest milestones in a long history of successful reptile breeding, the new arrivals offer hope for two little-known, yet important species. Read more: bit.ly/2cdySHN
