Title: Blacksmiths Needle

Artist: Members of the British Association of Blacksmith Artists 1996

Location - Promenade

Materials - Forged Steel

Commissioned by - TWDC

The Needle is conical in form with six sections. Each section contains objects, which relate to one of the senses including the sixth. The objects were made in public “forge-ins” with a mainly maritime theme. The work was inaugurated in May 1997 by Evelyn Glennie, the percussionist ringing a bell which hangs inside the needle.

Two shots of the Blacksmith shop at the abandoned AT&SF Railyard. Taken at different times in the morning from about the same spot. I didn't think these were quite good enough to upload originally...

The Mabry Mill Blacksmith was working this morning. Here, he's working on a clapper for a bell.

3-shot HDR, with the longest exposure blended back in to make the light trails (that Photomatix wanted to remove) more prominent.

A front view of the blacksmith's workshop. The blacksmith is now mainly preoccupied with making weapons and armor for the colony's garrisson.

It's always seems to be quite challenging to get just the right amount of sepia tone color and saturation for a given subject. I wanted this to have an "old west" look. To me, the out-of-focus edges resemble the old camera lens of the late 1800's. Unlike the previous WWII images...With those I attemted to produce a more "vintage" photo look of the 1940's. This one's got to be viewed on a black background.

One of the many displays set up at the 2nd annual Rendezvous in Fort Laramie, WY. There was a real blacksmith here showing how things used to be done. He's keeping the spirit of the blacksmith alive.

The victory gives hard.. The battle is not planned. Using a real weapon, injuries and wounds also certainly true..
