The Blacksmith Lapwing is a bird species that is found across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Sudan to South Africa. It is a medium-sized bird, with a length of around 30 cm and a wingspan of around 70 cm.
The Blacksmith Lapwing has a striking appearance, with a black and white plumage and a bright red eye. It also has a distinctive call, which sounds like a metallic 'tink-tink-tink'.
These birds are typically found in open grasslands and savannah habitats, where they feed on a variety of insects and other small invertebrates. They are ground-nesters, building their nests in shallow depressions in the ground and lining them with grass and other plant materials.
Blacksmith Lapwings are known for their aggressive behavior towards predators, and will often attack animals much larger than themselves in order to defend their nests or young. They are also highly territorial, and will aggressively defend their breeding territories against other lapwings and other species of birds.
Overall, the Blacksmith Lapwing is a fascinating and distinctive bird species that is well-adapted to life in the open grasslands and savannahs of Africa.

In an old derelict farm, I came across a small blacksmith area where the farmer used to make horse shoes for hes horses.
I'm thrilled to have received a Highly Commended certificate for this image at the recent BRCC 'People' competition, judged by Peter Walmsley. I also really appreciate all of the kind comments from BRCC members.
