One of the best things Ive eaten in a long time is this black sesame croissant with miso caramel...
Supermoon is a spectacular, can't-be-missed bakery with the same owner as the well-known Mr. Holmes in San Francisco. The iconic, holographic boxes and unique flavor combinations make it extremely IG-worthy, but it's worthy of all the hype, especially for the croissants.

Common names: Black cumin, Fennel Flower, Roman Coriander, Nutmeg Flower, Black seed, Black Caraway, Damascena, Devil in-the-bush, Wild Onion Seed. bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2009/shaheen_baya/Scientific%20c...
In English, Nigella sativa seed is variously called fennel flower, nutmeg flower, and Roman coriander. Other names used, sometimes misleadingly, are onion seed and black sesame, both of which are similar-looking, but unrelated. Blackseed and black caraway may also refer to Bunium persicum.
The seeds are frequently referred to as black cumin (as in Assamese: kaljeera or kolajeera or Bengali kalo jeeray), In south Indian language Kannada it is called "Krishna Jeerige", but this is also used for a different spice, Bunium persicum.

Nigella sativa oil contains an abundance of conjugated linoleic (18:2) acid, thymoquinone, nigellone (dithymoquinone),[12] melanthin, nigilline, damascenine, and tannins. Melanthin is toxic in large doses and nigelline is paralytic, so this spice must be used in moderation.

The seeds/oil have antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antimicrobial and antineoplastic activity. The oil decreases blood pressure and increases respiration.

Secret Compounds in Black Seed
Thymoquinone – A phytochemical that has demonstrated anti-cancer, anti-inflammation and immune-boosting properties.
Essential Fatty Acids – Black seed is high in essential fatty acids, particularly Linoleic acid. Linoleic acid is an omega 6 that has cancer prevention properties. It has also been shown to help with conditions such as cystic fibrosis and dermatitis.
Amino Acids – Nigella Sativa contains 15 amino acids that are needed for many bodily functions to maintain good health.
Minerals – Black onion seed also contains a lot of minerals which are important for normal bodily functions. These minerals include calcium, sodium, potassium and iron.
Carotene - A compound that the human body can convert into Vitamin A. Vitamin A is needed in the human body for the growth of new cells, improved night vision and healthy skin and hair to name but a few of its vital functions.
Phytosterols. This compound has been shown to lower cholesterol.
Allergy Protection – Certain diseases like bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema cause the body to produce histamines. When these histamines are released, the body’s immune system is goes into overdrive, causing tell-tale symptomatic allergic reactions. Researchers have reason to believe that Nigella Sativa protects people with these diseases by blocking the release of histamines in the first place. In Munich, 600 allergy patients were given 500mg of Black seed oil twice a day for 3 months. Scientists recorded a massive improvement in 85% of the patients.3

Cubes of hamachi lightly tossed in calamansi vinaigrette then artfully paired with:
avocado puree
cauliflower puree
puffed tapioca
black sesame powder
black sesame pearls
julienned scallion greens
compressed cucumber
calamansi vinaigrette
Ontario radish rounds
pickled ginger (thin orange rolls)
pickled cauliflower
shiso cress
thai basil cress
coriander cress
Cookstown Greens flowers
One thing to note is that the plating and ingredients do vary depending on the insipiration (perhaps freshness factor of the fish) of the day. Fish may be replaced with salmon, tuna or snapper however the Asian elements are always laced within the dish.
I liked it. But there were mixed reviews in the family who felt that ice creams should be sweeter rather than "savoury".
The recipe is based on the one found on weallscream.net: www.weallscream.net/post/7256874772/an-adaptation-of-this...
weallscream's ice cream base is essentially Jeni's, so I find these recipes very usable ;-)
The key differences are (i) I dropped the cream cheese.and sesame oil (ii) used 2 cups milk instead of one each of milk and coconut milk and (iii) added in a handful of blueberries rather than the orange blossom water to darken the colour and give it a hint of sweetness.
As mentioned, I thought it pretty yummy! If I can persuade my family members, might make it again with the coconut milk and the sesame oil (and omitted the blueberries).

Autumn is the season for Persimmons, I decided to try out this recipe for a popular Northern Chinese street snack
Dropping in to pick up a tub of takeaway icecream to enjoy back at Julia's apartment. The flavours they had were all very enticing, but we settled on Taro, Green Tea, Durian, Red Bean and Black Sesame. While we were waiting to be served, we saw plates of waffles and icecream, looking very scriptious indeed!
Taste-wise, the icecreams weren't bad, but the durian seemed to overpower everything else in the box. The texture of the icecream was very creamy, if a little too sweet.

For my father-in-law's birthday, a man who has no sweet tooth. =_=
The filling doesn't melt and turn glossy. Delicious nonetheless.
A tasty swirl of green tea and black sesame soft serve from Soft Swerve.

Despite Julia adding a bit more yeast, the sesame made the dough too heavy, and resulted in a rather dense bread. The black sesame taste is quite nice, especially with avocado and tahini for even more sesame goodness, or avocado and condensed milk!

I was super excited to try this place when I heard about flavors like black sesame, rosewater cardamom and Sociable Ciderwerks caramel. But, sadly, the texture was terrible. I think this has something to do with the fact that they are all vegan offerings. Regardless, with all the amazing ice cream the Twin Cities has to offer, I probably won't be trying it again.

Lots of food in my stream these days.
BTW - I had a nice steak yesterday which I omitted to photograph. It was photogenic enough, I was just too lazy and too hungry ;)

I finally did what I've been saying I'll do for ages - made a bento picnic with my friends! This is the first layer, which is packed in a Totoro bento from J-List: it has four compartments which usually have lids.
I'll be posting the next few layers one after the other over the next few days!
black sesame tang yuan in red bean paste
Tangyuan or tang yuan (simplified Chinese: 汤圆; traditional Chinese: 湯圓; pinyin: tāngyuán) is a Chinese food made from glutinous rice flour mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and is then cooked and served in boiling water. Tangyuan can be either small or large, and filled or unfilled. They are traditionally eaten during Yuanxiao or the Lantern Festival, but also served as a dessert on Chinese wedding day, Winter Solstice Festival (Chinese: 冬至; pinyin: Dōngzhì), and any occasions such as family re-union, because of a homophone for union (simplified Chinese: 团圆; traditional Chinese: 團圓; pinyin: tuányuán)
Historically, a number of different names were used to refer to tangyuan. During the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, the name was officially settled as yuanxiao (derived from the Yuanxiao Festival), which is used in northern China. This name literally means "first evening", being the first full moon after Chinese New Year, which is always a new moon.
In southern China, however, they are called tangyuan or tangtuan. Legend has it that during Yuan Shikai's rule from 1912 to 1916, he disliked the name yuanxiao (元宵) because it sounded identical to "remove Yuan" (袁消), and so he gave orders to change the name to tangyuan. This new moniker literally means "round balls in soup". Tangtuan similarly means "round dumplings in soup".
Northern Chinese tend to eat yuanxiao while Southern Chinese eat tangyuan. Both yuanxiao and tangyuan are in the form of a small round dumpling ball made of glutinous rice flour. However, the preference for taste could be different between Northern and Southern Chinese. Sweet fillings, preferred by Southern Chinese, often consist of sugar, sesame, osmanthus flowers, sweet bean paste and sweetened tangerine peel, to name but a few. As for the salty fillings preferred by Northern Chinese, minced meat and vegetables are usually the ingredients.
Tangyuan are first cooked in boiling water. Once cooked, savoury filled tangyuan are served in a clear soup broth, whilst sweet filled tangyuan are served in a ginger infused syrup.
Unfilled tangyuan are served as part of a sweet dessert soup (known in Cantonese cuisine as tong sui, which literally means "sugar water"). Common types include:
Red bean soup
Black sesame soup
Ginger and rock sugar
Fermented glutinous rice (醪糟 or 酒釀), Sweet Osmanthus and rock sugar.
