Us girlies went out again before we fly off tomorrow and got sidetracked when we saw MOF's array of ice cream :P
Ministry of Food's kurogoma (black sesame) ice cream is pretty yummy & is great to be shared.
Sue, will miss you HEAPS when you go - safe flight & big hugs!

Today is the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration (the 15th day of the new year) and it is the custom to eat rice dumplings.
I found these dumplings from Market Place: black sesame filling with either white rice skin or yam skin; peanut filling with either white rice or pumpkin skin.
In Shanghai, we sometimes add sweet fermented rice (酒釀)to the soup, along with osmanthus syrup(桂花糖).
Luckily my second time making this recipe went much better since I used the right amount of milk O=). This is my entry for Cupcake Hero::Caffeine.

I haven't tasted better kurogoma (black sesame) soft serve outside of Japan that here, at Matcha Love, inside Mitsuwa. You can get the three flavor waffle bowl for around $5 which is worth every penny. The other two flavors are matcha (green tea) and hoji-cha (roasted green tea).
Matcha Love (Mitsuwa). San Jose, California.
The best black sesame soft serve outside of Japan, in my humble opinion, is the Matcha Love shop inside Mitsuwa. Really good. You can also get it swirled with matcha or in a waffle bowl with one of four flavors, including hoji-cha.

22/08 - black sesame icecream with shiratama (chewy glutinous rice balls)
recipe for black sesame icecream (previous blog post)
shiratama is made by mixing shiratamako (japanese rice flour) with water, in equal amounts until a soft dough forms. shape into balls, boil until they float onto the surface and then boil for around 3 mins more. cool the shiratama immediately in ice water. drain well and serve with black sesame ice cream.
i sprinkled some ground black sesame on top, and used a small scoop so the ice cream and the shiratama are approximately the same size.
i bet shiratama would pair up great with matcha or adzuki ice cream too
Mini kurogoma (black sesame) cupcakes, frosted with matcha green tea whipped cream. A less sweet taste for lighter palettes!

Supermoon is a spectacular, can't-be-missed bakery with the same owner as the well-known Mr. Holmes in San Francisco. The iconic, holographic boxes and unique flavor combinations make it extremely IG-worthy, but it's worthy of all the hype, especially for the croissants.

yuzu vinaigrette + pickled ginger + cucumber + black sesame + shiso ($17)
Meticulously plated by Chef Andrew Wilson.
Cubes of hamachi lightly tossed in calamansi vinaigrette then artfully paired with:
avocado puree
cauliflower puree
puffed tapioca
black sesame powder
black sesame pearls
julienned scallion greens
compressed cucumber
calamansi vinaigrette
Ontario radish rounds
pickled ginger (thin orange rolls)
pickled cauliflower
shiso cress
thai basil cress
coriander cress
Cookstown Greens flowers
One thing to note is that the plating and ingredients do vary depending on the insipiration (perhaps freshness factor of the fish) of the day. Fish may be replaced with salmon, tuna or snapper however the Asian elements are always laced within the dish.

Shiba WIP no 51 。
To see more work in progress (wip): #quequecraftwip 。
I decided to temporarily show some decent work in progress that i have not made background yet . 。
。
This is another bigger piece that cracks my head to think how to make this scene. My friend Zuko (dogenderg) gave some idea and reference link. 。
And my other friend Cookie (kityakarlson) said Cookie didnt like bath at all!!! Cookie dad has visited the bath house that inspired the actual ghibli movie. 。
So i purposely make this scene mimicking them. 。
。
Of course as predicted another ghibli feature, the bath tub scene is the famous bathhouse scene from ghibli movie "spirited away" . Bathhouse owned by Yubaba the witch. I chose 3 wet shiba photos (Yumi, Miya and Zuko) to put them in bathtub, and Cookie was like screaming " Noooooo ! " Hope you enjoy it. This is WIP only. It was fun and challenging
Thank you for the fun and challenge 。

The best thing that happened when ION Orchard (a huge mall) opened was Bread Society. And even better is that it's so close to my house! I buy something every time I pass by.
back to front: yam cube, black sesame, and chestnut pastry, which btw, used to be twice the size when they first opened =o(

A soft serve display at one of my favorite shops along Ninnenzaka... Flavors being offered when I was last there include: chestnut, chestnut/matcha, matcha, vanilla/matcha, vanilla, black sesame/vanilla, and black sesame with honey.

Ito-en's matcha LOVE shop is amazing... I wish the Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights had this, but then again, considering that's a 7 hour drive, it may prove problematic. The soft serve is absolutely perfect here--it reminds me of the ice cream you get in Japan. The flavors are wonderfully balanced as well. Pictured is the waffle bowl combo ($5) which includes three flavors. I had the goma (black sesame), matcha (green tea) and hoji-cha (tea).

The black sesame ice cream at Hapa Izakaya in Yaletown was delicious. It was part of Hapa Izakaya's 2010 Taste of Yaletown menu.
I love black sesame. The cake is a basic vanilla cupcake recipe with grinded black sesame folded in. The buttercream is flavoured with sweetened black sesame paste. The paste is sold in freezer sections to be used as filling for Cantonese mochi in syrup. This is very easy to make because both flavouring agents are ready to use off the shelf.

Julia wanted a good toasted muesli, but the stuff in the supermarkets always seem to have artificial flavourings. Thanks to the wonderful intertubes, she could make her own!
As this was baking in the oven, the smell of maple syrup filled the house. :)
Crunchy when cool, it tasted very good. Not too sweet either.

These gluten free, vegan brownies get a ton of nutty flavour from black sesame seeds and toasted sesame oil, and a fudgy, "buttery" texture from pureed Tongues of Fire beans. With just a touch of coconut sugar, agave and stevia to sweeten, it's a refined-sugar-free treat too!
Puffed amaranth is easy and fun to make. It works very much like making popcorn: Heat a pot, fill in some amaranth, cover with a lid and wait until it is all puffed. Check from time to time if done, making sure the amaranth does not burn. Amaranth is protein-rich and is great sprinkled over porridge and breakfast cereals. It is also used in Mexican cold cacao drinks or smoothies. And, it works equally well in savory dishes and on top of steamed vegetables.
I’ve used black tahini for a contrast here. Black tahini sauce is made in a similar way as white sesame tahini: Squeeze a lemon, mince garlic, and marinate garlic in lemon juice for a couple of minutes. Mix some lukewarm water and salt into the black tahini to make it into a runny smooth sauce. Discard garlic and add the garlic-infused lemon juice, adjusting consistency.
Chef Andrew Wilson was the creative force behind the "daily sashimi" plate for this TorontoLife.com feature (yes, this was an arranged session). This series is dedicate to chef's efforts that afternoon.
