May 13, 2019 - Frank Lloyd Wright designed SC Johnson Administration Building (1936) and Research Tower (1943) located in Racine, Wisconsin.

 

"When Herbert Johnson refused to turn his back on his company’s hometown, Wright designed the building without windows, explaining that as “nature was not present” in the environment, his design would “recreate nature” on the interior. The result, Wright promised, would be like working in a pine forest glade, with fresh air and sunlight all of the time. Wright achieved his vision with the help of two important innovations: steel mesh-reinforced concrete and glass tubing. The concrete allowed him to build slender white columns that rose tendril-like from their nine-inch bases to eighteen-foot-wide circular concrete “lily pads” that support the roof. The tubing allowed much of the roof and clerestory to filter perfectly diffuse light between the lily pads, creating a space that, without traditional windows, is the very essence of light. Due to the fact that the available technology could not properly seal the glass tubing, the roof leaked every time it rained. Herbert Johnson took to keeping a bucket on his desk to catch the drops.

 

The construction of the Johnson Wax Administration posed significant challenges and costs, originally budgeted at $200,000, kept rising. “First, Frank Lloyd Wright was working for me,” Johnson recounted: “Then we were working together. Finally, I was working for him.” Despite spending some $900,000 to see his headquarters finished, Johnson was so enamored of Wright’s genius that he would go on to employ Wright to design both his personal home and the new headquarters for the company’s research and design division. The resulting fourteen-story research tower is connected to the main building by a covered bridge. Reinforced concrete slabs, cantilevered from the building’s central core, form the alternating square floors and circular balconies. Though the Research Tower is no longer in use because of a change in fire safety codes, an extensive restoration completed in 2013 has enabled the tower to be open for public tours for the first time in its history." This pavilion was designed for the SESAM 2009 workshop in Valle di Canne, Rome. Each workshop group was given a metal U-Structure (4.8m square), in which to explore the theme of Evolution. The concept of our project was to explore man's physical, mental and spiritual evolution. Visitors are led on a journey through the pavilion where they discover a variety of spaces articulated to heighten awareness of particular faculties. Touch — crawling through a dark and narrow passage, our concern is with the texture of the surfaces immediate to us. Vision — we stand, where we are presented with a view of the park in the distance. We become more aware of the world around us. Self-awareness — we discover a generous bright lit room, where a small mirror attracts our attention. Upon seeing ourselves we become aware of our own physical limitations. We are objects in space. Spirituality — The mirror also directs us to a seat in an adjoining space. Sitting here, in a chimney to the sky, we reflect on our experience.

 

Ce pavillon a été conçu pour l'atelier SESAM 2009 à Valle di Canne à Rome. Chaque groupe d'atelier a reçu une structure métallique en forme de U (4,8 m carrés), permettant d’y étudier l'Evolution. Le concept de notre projet étant d'analyser l'évolution physique, mentale et spirituelle de l'homme. Les visiteurs sont guidés dans un voyage à travers le pavillon où ils peuvent y découvrir une variété d'espaces articulés pour intensifier l’éveil des sens. Le toucher : en rampant à travers un passage sombre et étroit, nous nous intéressons à la texture des surfaces. La vision : nous pouvons admirer une vue du parc au loin. Nous devenons plus conscients du monde qui nous entoure. Conscience de soi: nous découvrons une pièce très illuminée où un petit miroir attire notre attention. En nous regardant, nous prenons conscience de nos propres limites physiques. Nous sommes des objets dans l'espace. Spiritualité : Le miroir nous dirige vers un siège dans un espace attenant. Assis ici, dans une cheminée vers le ciel, nous réfléchissons à notre expérience.

Indem wir uns selbst gegenüberstehen, wird uns die eigene physische Begrenztheit verdeutlicht. Wir erkennen uns als Objekt im Raum. Spiritualität – Der Spiegel führt uns auch zu einer Sitzmöglichkeit in einem angrenzenden Raum. Hier sitzend und unter einer kaminartigen Öffnung nach oben zum Himmel schauend, kann das Erlebnis reflektiert werden

Este pabellón fue diseñado para el taller SESAM 2009 en Valle di Canne, Rome. A cada grupo del taller se le dio una estructura metálica con forma de U (4.8m cuadrados), con la que explorar el tema de la evolución. El concepto de nuestro proyecto era explorar la evolución física, mental y espiritual del ser humano. Los visitantes son conducidos a un viaje a través del pabellón donde descubren una variedad de espacios articulados para aumentar la conciencia de los sentidos. Tacto – arrastrándose a través de un paso oscuro y estrecho, nuestro interés es con la textura de las superficies inmediatas a nosotros. Vista – nos ponemos de pie, donde se nos presenta una visión del parque en la distancia. Nos volvemos más conscientes del mundo que nos rodea. Autoconocimiento- descubrimos un amplio cuarto iluminado, donde un pequeño espejo atrae nuestra atención. Al vernos a nosotros mismos, nos damos cuenta de nuestras propias limitaciones físicas. Somos objetos en el espacio. Espiritualidad – el espejo también nos direcciona a un asiento en un espacio contiguo. Sentados aquí, en una chimenea hacia el cielo, reflexionamos sobre nuestra experiencia.

 

Questo padiglione è stato progettato per il workshop SESAM 2009 nella Valle di Canne, Roma. Ad ogni gruppo di lavoro è stato data una struttura quadrata in metallo (4,8 m2), nella quale doveva essere esplicato il tema dell’evoluzione. Il concetto del nostro progetto era quello di esplicare l'evoluzione fisica, mentale e spirituale dell'uomo. I visitatori sono condotti in un viaggio dentro il padiglione dove scoprono una varietà di spazi articolati per aumentare la consapevolezza di particolari facoltà. Tatto, la scansione attraverso un corridoio buio e stretto, la nostra preoccupazione è stata il rivestimento delle superfici. Visione, di dove ci troviamo, ci viene presentato con una vista sul parco in lontananza. Diventiamo più consapevoli del mondo che ci circonda. La Consapevolezza di sé - si scopre grazie una generosa stanza illuminata, dove un piccolo specchio attira la nostra attenzione. Dopo aver visto noi stessi ci rendiamo conto dei nostri limiti fisici. Siamo oggetti nello spazio. Spiritualità - Lo specchio ci indirizza anche a un posto in uno spazio adiacente. Seduto qui, in un posto al cielo, riflettiamo sulla nostra esperienza.

Autoconocimiento- descubrimos un amplio cuarto iluminado, donde un pequeño espejo atrae nuestra atención. Al vernos a nosotros mismos, nos damos cuenta de nuestras propias limitaciones físicas. Somos objetos en el espacio. Espiritualidad – el espejo también nos direcciona a un asiento en un espacio contiguo. Sentados aquí, en una chimenea hacia el cielo, reflexionamos sobre nuestra experiencia.

Ad ogni gruppo di lavoro è stato data una struttura quadrata in metallo (4,8 m2), nella quale doveva essere esplicato il tema dell’evoluzione. Il concetto del nostro progetto era quello di esplicare l'evoluzione fisica, mentale e spirituale dell'uomo. I visitatori sono condotti in un viaggio dentro il padiglione dove scoprono una varietà di spazi articolati per aumentare la consapevolezza di particolari facoltà. Tatto, la scansione attraverso un corridoio buio e stretto, la nostra preoccupazione è stata il rivestimento delle superfici. Visione, di dove ci troviamo, ci viene presentato con una vista sul parco in lontananza. Diventiamo più consapevoli del mondo che ci circonda. La Consapevolezza di sé - si scopre grazie una generosa stanza illuminata, dove un piccolo specchio attira la nostra attenzione. Dopo aver visto noi stessi ci rendiamo conto dei nostri limiti fisici. This pavilion was designed for the SESAM 2009 workshop in Valle di Canne, Rome. Each workshop group was given a metal U-Structure (4.8m square), in which to explore the theme of Evolution. The concept of our project was to explore man's physical, mental and spiritual evolution. Visitors are led on a journey through the pavilion where they discover a variety of spaces articulated to heighten awareness of particular faculties. Touch — crawling through a dark and narrow passage, our concern is with the texture of the surfaces immediate to us. Vision — we stand, where we are presented with a view of the park in the distance. We become more aware of the world around us. Self-awareness — we discover a generous bright lit room, where a small mirror attracts our attention. Upon seeing ourselves we become aware of our own physical limitations. We are objects in space. Spirituality — The mirror also directs us to a seat in an adjoining space. Sitting here, in a chimney to the sky, we reflect on our experience.

 

Ce pavillon a été conçu pour l'atelier SESAM 2009 à Valle di Canne à Rome. Chaque groupe d'atelier a reçu une structure métallique en forme de U (4,8 m carrés), permettant d’y étudier l'Evolution. Le concept de notre projet étant d'analyser l'évolution physique, mentale et spirituelle de l'homme. Les visiteurs sont guidés dans un voyage à travers le pavillon où ils peuvent y découvrir une variété d'espaces articulés pour intensifier l’éveil des sens. Le toucher : en rampant à travers un passage sombre et étroit, nous nous intéressons à la texture des surfaces. La vision : nous pouvons admirer une vue du parc au loin. Nous devenons plus conscients du monde qui nous entoure. Conscience de soi: nous découvrons une pièce très illuminée où un petit miroir attire notre attention. En nous regardant, nous prenons conscience de nos propres limites physiques. Nous sommes des objets dans l'espace. Spiritualité : Le miroir nous dirige vers un siège dans un espace attenant. Assis ici, dans une cheminée vers le ciel, nous réfléchissons à notre expérience.

 

Der Pavillon wurde für den SESAM 2009 Workshop im Valle di Canne, Rom, entworfen. Jede teilnehmende Workshopgruppe erhielt zu Beginn eine metallene U-Struktur (4,8 m2), mit der das Thema Evolution bearbeitet werden sollte. Das Konzept des unseres Projekts war die Untersuchung der physischen, mentalen und geistigen Entwicklung des Menschen. Die Besucher wurden durch verschiedene Räume des Pavillons geführt, die so eingerichtet waren, dass die Wahrnehmung unterschiedlicher Sinneseindrücke geschärft wurde. Berührung – indem eine dunkle und enge Passage kriechend überwunden werden muss, kommen wir unmittelbar mit der Oberflächenbeschaffenheit des Bodens in Kontakt. Sicht – stehend wird der Blick auf den in der Ferne liegenden Park freigegeben. Die Welt um uns herum wird uns bewusster. Selbsterkenntnis – in einem hell erleuchteten Raum zieht ein kleiner Spiegel die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Indem wir uns selbst gegenüberstehen, wird uns die eigene physische Begrenztheit verdeutlicht. Wir erkennen uns als Objekt im Raum. Spiritualität – Der Spiegel führt uns auch zu einer Sitzmöglichkeit in einem angrenzenden Raum. Hier sitzend und unter einer kaminartigen Öffnung nach oben zum Himmel schauend, kann das Erlebnis reflektiert werden

May 15, 2019 - Frank Lloyd Wright's Unitarian Meeting House located at 900 University Bay Drive in Madison, Wisconsin.

 

"The Unitarian Meeting House, completed in 1951, shares many hallmarks of Wright’s other Usonian structures. It is a single-story building featuring wide overhanging eaves, a low and unobtrusive entryway, large fireplaces, and a concrete floor. Its most distinctive feature is the soaring glass and wood “prow” on its southern exposure, which Wright said symbolized aspiration. Wright was a long-time member of the First Unitarian Society housed in the Meeting House, and his parents were founding members of the congregation. Donated to the City of Bexley in 1946

Robert was the son of the founder of Jeffrey Mining Co., and was Columbus' youngest mayor in 1903 at 29 years of age. After working at the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company, the founder’s son, Robert Jeffrey, turned to politics and in 1903, at the age of 29, became mayor of Columbus. After three years he returned to the family firm, where he remained for the rest of his career. Note the mansion’s many Jacobethan Revival design features: brick walls with cut stone trim, multiple casement windows, and ornamented doorways. Crenellations on the tops of some walls are reminiscent of English castles. The entrance area dates from 1922, and the south wings, porte cochere, and west terrace from 1926. The elevated west terrace provides expansive views over the property. In 1941 Jeffrey donated the house to the city of Bexley to be used as a community center. Jeffrey Mansion is located within a park of nearly forty acres. Facilities include a large lawn behind the house, picnic shelter, tennis courts, a community swimming pool, and trails through the woods along Alum Creek."

May 31, 2021 - Green Lawn Abbey Preservation Association Annual Memorial Day open house. The last time I visited the abbey was Memorial Day 2010. Green Lawn Abbey is on the National Register of Historic Places.

History.

Green Lawn Abbey was built by the Columbus Mausoleum Company, a local company that built numerous mausoleums in central Ohio. The Abbey wasn’t the company’s first mausoleum, nor was it it’s last but it was its finest.

 

Construction of the Abbey began in 1927 and opened for business in 1929 as a “community” mausoleum. Community mausoleums were a new business model for cemeteries. Historically mausoleums were built by individual families for their own occupancy. But a community mausoleum offered crypts in an already-constructed building that could be purchased individually.

 

The Abbey was much sought after by new wealth in Columbus as evidenced by purchases by successful entrepreneurs and accomplished professionals. Interred at the Abbey are members of the Sells family, who owned and operated a circus, Howard Thurston, an internationally famous magician, and George Karb, Columbus Mayor at the time of the catastrophic 1913 flood and who oversaw Columbus redevelopment afterwards. Just to name a few.

 

Late in the 20th century, Green Lawn Abbey declined considerably. The target of vandals and break-ins and lacking sufficient funds for much needed renovations. It wasn’t until 2008, when the Green Lawn Abbey Preservation Association was formed that the Abbey’s renaissance began.

 

Green Lawn Abbey is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its fine Palladio-inspired neoclassical architecture, its high-quality materials, and expert craftsmanship. It is also listed because it represents new growth in American commerce, that is, community mausoleums.

 

Architecture.

Green Lawn Abbey is a superb example of neoclassical architecture expertly executed in the style of 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Configured like an Italian villa, the 2nd floor has high ceilings, sports free standing marble columns and marble mantles, and is graced with natural lighting from its many stained glass windows.

 

It is a 2-story symmetrical building, whose most prominent feature is the classical Tuscan-style portico topped by a pediment inscribed with the year 1927, and Green Lawn Abbey carved into the frieze.

 

The stained glass windows of the Abbey are truly exceptional. They were produced by the Rossbach Art Glass Company, a highly regarded local company active in Columbus from 1908 through 1944. Abbey windows represent biblical stories. Most are superbly executed in the Art Deco style.

 

Preservation.

Lacking adequate maintenance for decades, the Abbey had deteriorated considerably by 2008 and much needed to be done. The GLAPA board tackled the challenge and raised funds to renovate/replace two of the four roofs, restore eight windows, stabilize the foundation and granite two-story steps, hone the marble floors, install new wiring throughout and renovate one set of bronze doors. The bathroom was recently updated, expanded and made ADA-compliant. The architectural firm Schooley Caldwell Associates oversaw the work that was funded in part by the Certified Local Government program administered by the Ohio History Connection. Much remains to be done but the transformation is truly remarkable.

May 14, 2019 - After lunch we had a tour of the Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion designed by Santiago Calatrava.

 

"The Quadracci Pavilion is the iconic sculptural addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum designed by Santiago Calatrava. The Spanish architect was inspired by the “dramatic, original building by Eero Saarinen, . . . the topography of the city,” and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie-style architecture.

 

The 142,050-square-foot structure was completed in 2001 and houses a grand reception hall, an auditorium, a large exhibition space, a store, two cafés, and parking. Both cutting-edge technology and old-world craftsmanship went into creating the graceful building, which was made largely by pouring concrete into one-of-a-kind wooden forms.

 

Windhover Hall is the grand reception hall and among the pavilion’s many architectural highlights. Complete with flying buttresses, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and a central nave topped by a 90-foot-high glass roof, it is Calatrava’s interpretation of a Gothic cathedral. An average-sized, two-story family home would fit comfortably inside it. The hall’s chancel is shaped like the prow of a ship, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking over Lake Michigan. Adjoining the central hall are two tow-arched promenades, the Baumgartner Galleria and Schroeder Galleria, with expansive views of the lake and downtown.

 

The Museum’s signature wings, the Burke Brise Soleil, form a moveable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan. The brise soleil is made up of 72 steel fins, ranging in length from 26 to 105 feet. The entire structure weighs 90 tons. It takes 3.5 minutes for the wings to open or close. Sensors on the fins continually monitor wind speed and direction, so when winds exceed 23 mph for more than 3 seconds, the wings close automatically.

 

According to Santiago Calatrava, the Quadracci Pavilion’s design “responds to the culture of the lake: the sailboats, the weather, the sense of motion and change.” And “in the crowning element of the brise soleil,” he stated, “the building’s form is at once formal (completing the composition), functional (controlling the level of light), symbolic (opening to welcome visitors), and iconic (creating a memorable image for the Museum and the city).”

June 26, 2018 - "The Church of Hallgrimur, also known as Hallgrimskirkja, is a Lutheran church located at Reykjavik, Iceland. It sits high on top of a hill located within the center of the city. It is also considered as one of Reykjavik s most striking landmarks and the country s largest church.

 

The Church of Hallgrimur was named after a famous Icelandic poet and clergy man, Hallgrimur Petursson, composer of the Passion hymns that is still being sung today. The design for the church was commissioned to state architect Guojon Samuelsson in 1937. The design was intended to resemble the natural landscape of Iceland with its volcanoes, ice caps and basalt columns.

 

After the design for the church was completed, construction of the structure began sometime in 1945. It took around 38 years to build the church which was finally completed in 1974. Its nave was consecrated in 1986.

The church tower stands 74.5 meters or 244 feet high, making it the tallest building not only in Reykjavik but in the whole of Iceland. It stands in sixth place when it comes to being the tallest human made structure in Iceland. The top five are all communications masts built in Iceland.

 

The main feature of the church is its imposing tower which is uniquely designed to resemble the basalt column common in the country. Visitors may be able to come up the church tower via an elevator. As the tallest building in Reykjavik, it also acts as an observation tower where people can get the best views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

 

The church is primarily built out of poured concrete and follows expressionist architecture in terms of style. Its interiors are considered simple and features minimal design in line with the Lutheran tradition.
