Talmage Hughes was the architect of this modern, minimalist apartment building (built 1937) in Detroit's Palmer Park Apartment Buildings Historic District. This view of the building's rear facade emphasizes its interplay of curve with straight lines.

Later in his career Hughes designed several area movie theaters and published a monthly architectural newsletter.

May 14, 2019 - Frank Lloyd Wright's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church located at 9400 West Congress Street in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Designed in 1956. The church opened in 1961 two years after Wright's death. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"Wright’s design for the structure he affectionately termed “a little St. Sophia” is defined by the symbols of the Greek Orthodox faith (it is essentially a Greek cross inscribed

in a circle), but it is a marked departure from traditional Byzantine church architecture.

Four equidistant concrete pillars support the domed roof while defining a cross on the main floor. Wright’s resulting uninterrupted circular sanctuary creates an interior at once spacious and intimate. The 106-foot wide dome is not fixed, but floats on thousands of ball bearings contained in a steel rail that caps the outer wall. The gold-anodized aluminum used throughout the building was a new material developed by Alcoa. The dome’s original blue tile exterior has been replaced by a synthetic plastic resin due to structural problems. One of Wright’s last major commissions, the church was not unveiled until two years after his death." July 4, 2023 - "The delightful Trajano bridge is the icon of Chaaves and has been a crossing point of the Rio Tâmega at this site since the Roman era. The bridge was initial constructed in the 1st century on the orders of Emperor Trajan, and is named after him. The course of the river has altered over the generations and at its maximum,, there were 18 arches spanning the river. Today the river is narrower and only spanned by 16 arches. At the centre of the granite bridge, are two replica pillars of the Roman commemorative inscriptions which once stood here (these can be seen in the Chaves Regional Museum). The first poplar states that the bridge was funded by the population of Chaves and is dedicated to Emperor Trajan, while the second pillar, the Padrão dos Povos, is dedicated to Roman emperors Titus and Vespasian". The Rows are continuous half-timbered galleries, reached by steps, which form a second row of shops above those at street level along Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and Bridge Street. The Rows are unique in the world to Chester, and nobody is quite sure why they were built in this way. Some original 13th century buildings, including the Three Old Arches in Bridge Street, have survived the ravages of time, but many of the impressive facades are Victorian copies. Nevertheless, they are still magnificent and greatly contribute to the beauty and character of Chester.

This pavilion was designed for the SESAM 2009 workshop in Valle di Canne, Rome. Each workshop group was given a metal U-Structure (4.8m square), in which to explore the theme of Evolution. The concept of our project was to explore man's physical, mental and spiritual evolution. Visitors are led on a journey through the pavilion where they discover a variety of spaces articulated to heighten awareness of particular faculties. Touch — crawling through a dark and narrow passage, our concern is with the texture of the surfaces immediate to us. Vision — we stand, where we are presented with a view of the park in the distance. We become more aware of the world around us. Self-awareness — we discover a generous bright lit room, where a small mirror attracts our attention. Upon seeing ourselves we become aware of our own physical limitations. We are objects in space. Spirituality — The mirror also directs us to a seat in an adjoining space. Sitting here, in a chimney to the sky, we reflect on our experience.

Siamo oggetti nello spazio. Spiritualità - Lo specchio ci indirizza anche a un posto in uno spazio adiacente. Seduto qui, in un posto al cielo, riflettiamo sulla nostra esperienza.

May 2, 2021 - LeVeque Tower at 50 West Broad Street was designed by architect C. Howard Crane in the art moderne style. It was built for the American Insurance Union Citadel which was the buildings name when it was completed. Its claim to fame was that it was the fifth tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1927. It stands 555'-5" and is clad in white, "oak bark" terra cotta molded into textured blocks resembling cut stone. The LeVeque Tower recently received a complete makeover and now features a boutique hotel, apartments, condominiums and office space.

August 30, 2019 - "Canada’s busiest harbour and third largest city surrounds Canada Place. Rich in history and bustling with activity, Vancouver’s downtown harbour front has seen extensive growth since its humble beginnings.

The area now occupied by Canada Place has served as the location for visits from the earliest explorers, the completion of sawmills, the arrival of the first ships to provide lumber to world markets, major immigrations from Asia; the completion of the first transcontinental railway and the arrival of the first train; and the completion of major shipping terminals to support the economy of Western Canada.

The land upon which Canada Place was built has historical beginnings as the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Pier B-C. This land was granted to CPR for the construction of a railway from sea to sea. Pier B-C’s primary purpose was to serve Canadian Pacific, Royal Mail, NYK, OSK, and other shipping lines trading with the Orient, Australia and New Zealand but it also served the development of British Columbia and the CP Steamships coastal fleet which transported people, vehicles and cargo to virtually every accessible portion of the coast and Vancouver Island until 1955.

In 1978, Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments commenced planning for development of convention, cruise ship and hotel facilities at Pier B-C supported by The Honourable Grace McCarthy. Four years later, the Government of Canada created a crown corporation, Canada Harbour Place Corporation (now known as Canada Place Corporation), to develop the Canada Place project on the Pier B-C site. Canada Place would be used as the Canadian Pavilion at the Expo ’86 World Fair. Construction began when HM Queen Elizabeth II arrived on the royal yacht Britannia with The Right Honourable Pierre Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada and The Honourable William R. Bennett, Premier of British Columbia to initiate the first concrete pour in a caisson located at the southeast corner of the site.

During Expo ’86, the Canada Pavilion at Canada Place was opened by HRH Prince Charles and The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada. Among the largest and most elaborate pavilions presented by any nation at any World’s Fair, the Canada Pavilion hosted more than 5 million visitors prior to the October 13, 1986 closing date. The Canada Pavilion has been acknowledged as one of the best-ever host nation pavilions at a world exposition. Wholly funded by the Government of Canada, the Canada Pavilion was converted into the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre in 1987 and was then officially turned over to the Province of British Columbia as a lasting legacy for the Canadian people.

The world class landmark that today is Canada Place is dedicated by the Government of Canada to the people of Canada and the world, who will visit and enjoy the many features of this unique project. Canada Place is home port to the Vancouver-Alaska cruise, and houses Vancouver Convention Centre East, Pan Pacific Hotel, FlyOver Canada, World Trade Centre and West Park. Canada Place is owned and operated by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority." Previous text from the following website: www.canadaplace.ca

May 1, 2022 - Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam at Mr. Visserplein 3. "The beautiful Portuguese Synagogue, also called the Esnoga, is one of the most important legacies of the vibrant Jewish community in Amsterdam. Until the Holocaust Jews made up more than 10% of the population of Amsterdam. During the 16th and 17th century, many Jews that faced persecution in Spain and Portugal fled to Amsterdam. The religious tolerance they enjoyed in the Dutch Republic was unheard of in the rest of Europe.

History of the Portuguese Synagogue

In 1665, the Jewish community decided to build a new synagogue. The new synagogue was to be the biggest in the world. Architects Elias Bouwman and Daniel Stalpaert were commissioned to build the synagogue. They started building in 1671 and in 1675 the Portuguese Synagogue was ready. It had cost the community not less than 186,000 florins. Minor restorations have been made but the synagogue still looks pretty much the same as 340 years ago.

Architecture of the Portuguese Synagogue

The architecture shows the self-confidence and wealth of the Jewish community in Amsterdam. It was the largest synagogue of its time and one of the biggest buildings of Amsterdam. A model of the Temple of Salomon in Jerusalem inspired the architects. Around the main building, there are various offices and archives, the rabbinate, a mortuary and the Ets Haim (Tree of Life) library that holds valuable collections of Sephardic manuscripts.

The Entrance

There is an inscription in Hebrew above the entrance that refers to Psalm 5:8: “In the abundance of Thy lovingkindness will I come into Thy house" and mentions the date 1672. This date is an interesting curiosity: this was the year in which the synagogue was supposed to be ready. Because of the war in 1672, “The Year of Disaster” it was not possible to finish the construction of the Portuguese Synagogue until 1675.

Interior of the Portuguese Synagogue

Amsterdam SynagogueThe interior of the Portuguese Synagogue is of the longitudinal Iberian-Sephardic type. The striking wooden Ark and the Tebah are found at opposite ends of the interior. Seating is divided into two halves facing one another. The women’s gallery is supported by twelve stone columns, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. During service 1000 candles in two enormous brass chandeliers light the synagogue." Previous description: www.amsterdam.info/portuguese-synagogue/
