The penultimate image of 2015. I'm saving something special for my finale.
Gereformeerde Kerk, Colesberg
The koppie, or rocky hill behind this Reformed Church provides a sense of place, while the moon overhead in the morning light is a sign of sorts.
If you have driven from Johannesburg to Cape Town along the N1, you have driven through Colesberg. Halfway between the two metropolises, just across the Orange River if you are approaching from the Joburg side, on the doorstep of the Karoo, Colesberg is for the traveller in a hurry a place to fill up the car and stretch your legs before you get back on the road again.
Yet it is a place with a history, founded in 1830 on an old London Missionary Society station, on one of the main routes followed by traders, hunters and settlers into the South African interior, and site of a number of Anglo-Boer war battles and skirmishes. After years of just passing through, we stopped over for a night and I took a few photographs.
Taken over a ten-year period, between 2012 and 2022, this series of photographs is from a project on South African country villages and towns. Many of the images are of small Karoo towns, and many of these in turn are of the Dutch Reformed Churches whose steeples are visible for miles around in the vast, semi-desert region that lies, metaphorically and geographically, at South Africa’s centre.
There is something about these Karoo towns, in particular, that has always spoken to me - the stillness of the empty streets in the heat of the day, the white, shuttered cottages, the big skies overhead. And always, at the edge of town, or sprawling out into the arid land, the coloured settlement or African location. In South Africa, as elsewhere, as Faulkner wrote, ‘The past is never dead. It’s not even past.’

The spire of the Chrysler Building, one of New York City's most iconic of skyscrapers.
When the light catches the top of the Chrysler Building, it's magic. The sun seems as if it dances along the art-deco architecture.

June 16, 2017 - Wangjing SOHO is a mixed-use development designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. This photo was taken from the bus on our way back to our hotel.
A limestone and half-timbered gateway in the old town of Evesham (Worcestershire, in west-central England) on a partly sunny afternoon in mid-May. The historic gateway leads from the grounds of the former Evesham Abbey to a small square; it was built under Abbot Reynold, also known as Reginald, who was abbot of the Benedictine monastery from 1130 to 1149.
Towards the right foreground, part of All Saints Church can be seen. This Anglican parish church was originally founded during the 12th century as part of Evesham Abbey, was added to during the subsequent medieval centuries, then was extensively restored by the Victorian architect Frederick Preedy, 1872-1876 (according to Wikipedia -- the primary dates given in Alan Brooks and Nikolaus Pevsner, Worcestershire (Yale University Press, 2007, p. 291), are 1874-1876, though some 1872 elements are also mentioned there).
While not many of the older buildings survive in this market town, the small historic area is very appealing.

This roll of film was developed to showcase the film's grain and this image shows it well. Not bad for a hand held image. This is what I LOVE about film!
I could not have made this image without my trusty Sekonic L-778 Dual Spotmeter.
This image seems to have all the zones covered 0-9 and a little grain thrown in for good measure.

July 6, 2023 - Dom Luís I Bridge and the Douro River. "This iconic arching iron bridge straddles the Douro River, connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. Though Porto is known for having quite a few bridges, the Dom Luis I Bridge is especially renowned because it was designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, the mastermind behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Plus, at the time of its completion in 1886, this bridge was the longest iron arch in the world. The bridge accommodates cars on its lower level and Porto's metro on its upper level; pedestrians can walk along the bridge on both levels. Stroll along the upper deck of the bridge and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the edifices built into the hillside cliffs that line the river.
Admiring the bridge's composition and the views it offers is something all visitors to Porto must do, travelers consistently attest. A visit here would pair well with a stop at some of Porto's nearby wineries across the bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia. Another option would be to hop on a Douro River cruise or boat tour, which would allow you to see all six bridges in one go.
You'll find the Dom Luis I Bridge's entry points on the southeastern edge of Porto and the northern edge of Vila Nova de Gaia. The nearest metro stops are Sao Bento in Porto and Jardim do Morro in Vila Nova de Gaia, both on the D (yellow) line." There’s a haunting romance in photographing an old Irish greenhouse , glass panes cracked and misted, ivy creeping through the frames, and the ghostly light filtering through the decay. In black and white, its beauty deepens: shadows cling to the rusting ironwork, reflections shimmer faintly on broken glass, and the air feels thick with forgotten stories. Once a place of growth and warmth, it now stands as a poetic ruin , a fragile monument to time, memory, and nature reclaiming what was once her own.

January 23, 2021 - East Regional Chilled Water Plant located at 30 W 18th Ave on the campus of The Ohio State University.
"On a prominent site between campus and city, this critically important large infrastructure facility fits comfortably among its smaller academic neighbors, preserves an important green space, and frames the gateway for a new campus entry.
The large scale of the structure is modulated by its composition of two offset volumes: a lower, glazed rectangular volume with semi-transparent views from the interior looking out, and an upper lifted square volume with perforated metal walls of copper colored, coated aluminum that provides a cost-effective water cooling tower enclosure.
The upper screen wall is designed with two perforation densities, and together with narrow open slots achieve the average 50% open area needed for equipment ventilation. The perforated copper-colored aluminum enclosure is a modern companion to the brick used widely throughout the campus.
Designed to support the densely packed equipment layout, both the upper and lower volumes respond to unique engineering requirements- the upper screened volume contains the cooling towers, and the lower houses the chillers. To minimize the building mass, a full basement contains pumping equipment.
Both volumes are gently illuminated at night to provide site lighting for the surrounding pedestrian zones and to continue the dialogue between the forms and their contrasting materials. The glowing crystalline lower volume is illuminated from the inside, while the glittering metallic volume above is illuminated with a halo of projecting lights at its upper edge.
The new chilled water plant will significantly improve overall campus central plant efficiency. The building is targeted for LEED Gold certification." Previous text from the following website: www.lwa-architects.com/project/the-ohio-state-east-region...

November 7, 2021 - The National Register of Historic places Broad Street United Methodist Church at 501 East Broad Street.
"The Architectural firm of Yost and Packard originally designed this historic church located on the corner of Broad Street and Washington Ave. The church was built in 1885. It was designed in the gothic revival style with Victorian influences that were prevalent at the time. The design included the selection of green serpentine stone for the exterior façade. The stone was quarried in West Chester Pennsylvania. Serpentine stone is a beautiful looking material with rich veining and flecks of mica that glisten in the sunlight. Unfortunately, the stone is also a very porous material. Soon after the stone was originally installed, the church began experiencing problems with water infiltration and spalling. Attempts over the years were made to patch the stone and mortar. Many of these patching attempts actually did more harm than good.
In 2006 the church decided that all of the serpentine stone on the church needed to be removed and replaced. Working with Rogers Krajnak Architects, Inc., a new synthetic cast stone was selected to replace the serpentine stone. The new cast stone was designed to replicate the color, size and texture of the serpentine stone. Because the church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the stone replacement needed and received unanimous approval from the City’s Historic Resources Commission.
The original exterior walls were constructed of several layers of brick interconnected in a dovetail manner with the serpentine stone. The painstaking process to remove the serpentine stone on the exterior while minimizing cracks on the interior plaster included the installation of steel braces and needle beams. The original serpentine stone was methodically removed in small sections exposing the brick within the wall. New cast stone was installed in small sections anchored with stainless steel connectors and mortared in place. Subsequent sections of serpentine stone were removed followed by the installation of sections of new cast stone in multiple sequences until the stone replacement on each façade complete." May 14, 2019 - Frank Lloyd Wright's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church located at 9400 West Congress Street in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Designed in 1956. The church opened in 1961 two years after Wright's death. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"Wright’s design for the structure he affectionately termed “a little St. Sophia” is defined by the symbols of the Greek Orthodox faith (it is essentially a Greek cross inscribed
in a circle), but it is a marked departure from traditional Byzantine church architecture.
Four equidistant concrete pillars support the domed roof while defining a cross on the main floor. Wright’s resulting uninterrupted circular sanctuary creates an interior at once spacious and intimate. The 106-foot wide dome is not fixed, but floats on thousands of ball bearings contained in a steel rail that caps the outer wall. The gold-anodized aluminum used throughout the building was a new material developed by Alcoa. The dome’s original blue tile exterior has been replaced by a synthetic plastic resin due to structural problems. One of Wright’s last major commissions, the church was not unveiled until two years after his death." July 4, 2023 - "The delightful Trajano bridge is the icon of Chaaves and has been a crossing point of the Rio Tâmega at this site since the Roman era. The bridge was initial constructed in the 1st century on the orders of Emperor Trajan, and is named after him. The course of the river has altered over the generations and at its maximum,, there were 18 arches spanning the river. Today the river is narrower and only spanned by 16 arches. At the centre of the granite bridge, are two replica pillars of the Roman commemorative inscriptions which once stood here (these can be seen in the Chaves Regional Museum). The first poplar states that the bridge was funded by the population of Chaves and is dedicated to Emperor Trajan, while the second pillar, the Padrão dos Povos, is dedicated to Roman emperors Titus and Vespasian". The Rows are continuous half-timbered galleries, reached by steps, which form a second row of shops above those at street level along Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and Bridge Street. The Rows are unique in the world to Chester, and nobody is quite sure why they were built in this way. Some original 13th century buildings, including the Three Old Arches in Bridge Street, have survived the ravages of time, but many of the impressive facades are Victorian copies. Nevertheless, they are still magnificent and greatly contribute to the beauty and character of Chester.
July 5, 2017 - The Bayon Temple is located at Angkor Thom. It was constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII. It was the last state temple to be built at Angkor. Built as a Mahayana Buddhist shrine dedicated to Buddha.
