"Coke is a fuel with few impurities and a high carbon content, usually made from coal. It is the solid carbonaceous material derived from destructive distillation of low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal. Coke made from coal are grey, hard, and porous. While coke can be formed naturally, the commonly used form is man-made. The form known as petroleum coke, or pet coke, is derived from oil refinery coker units or other cracking processes."

In 1862, the first gas lamp was lit using power which came from Victoria's City Gas Works. The large brick building housed nine retorts and three ovens, which burned bituminous coal from Nanaimo. The coal was brought in on boats which tied up to the 200 foot by 26 foot wharf. BC. Electric Co eventually bought the City Gas and the building stood empty for several years. After a $6,000,000 renovation it is now open as The Canoe Club, an upscale restaurant.

Old trestle of the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad over the Juniata River. The Huntington and Broad Top Mountain Railroad and Coal Company was chartered on May 6, 1852, and organized on January 10, 1853. The purpose of the line was to provide a rail link from Huntington to Bedford, and to provide a competitive alternate route to local coal producers to break the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's monopoly on coal that was being shipped from the Cumberland, Md., area. The existence of high quality semi-bituminous coal in the Broad Top Mountain region was known since colonial times. Before the railroad, wagon or pole barge was the only practical method of bringing the coal from the remote region to market. Huntingdon, Pa. 11 June 2011

Civil Construction services are routinely undertaken by engineering companies. Their facilities include commercial road resurfacing, heavy patching and bituminous coating. They possess a team full of professional people who are equipped with the latest machinery. They have the capability of tackling assignments so that they meet the deadline and at the same time ensure that high-quality work is produced. Irrespective of the size, they can handle both public and private projects.

The Magee Mine was in operation from 1908 until 1954 by the Westmoreland Coal Company. In 1914 Magee had the largest individual mine output in the entire Ninth Bituminous Coal District (which covered all of Fayette, Westmoreland and Allegheny Counties) with more than 700,000 tons produced that year. They employed 500 men inside the mine alone.

Today, the Magee Mine remains forgotten by most as nature takes her back.
