With this ISO 100 photo from a Canon 40D the results are less obvious than with the ISO 800 photo from a 450D. 8 bit again is not enough with very obvious posterization artifacts. 9 bits gets very close to the quality of the 14 bit version but I think there is still a small difference which pretty much disappears in the 10 bit file.
The user interface of the Rawnalyze program is rather annoying. The program gives no indication if it accepted my command to reduce the bit depth. So it often leaves me guessing if the program actually did the intended treatment.

For April Fool's Day 2012, Google rolled out a fun new feature in Google Maps. In addition to globe, satellite, and default map views, you can also select a rendering that looks like every standard adventure game in the 8-bit Nintendo era. The street view is also rendered accordingly.

Friday afternoon and almost done with just a few bits to complete. First start in a couple of kicks but showed the throttle cable operation was no good, and the stand was too short. When purchased the bike had a 19 inch front wheel and I had changed it to a 21 inch wheel. Not sure whether the American spec bike had a 19 inch wheel from new or whether the stand had been shortened by a previous owner.
Apologies for there being a gap in the photos but with time running out to finish the bike for the 70th running of the Pioneer Club Trial at Kaikoura in early June it was more important to work on the bike than take photos.
All Saints church at Eyke is a bit different in every sense, you could easily pass through the village and miss it as there's no tower to announce its presence on the streetscape, just a fairly humble-looking nave and chancel in the midst of the pleasant open space of the churchyard. Its appearance is rather nondescript though quirky, viewing it from the east shows the chancel to be dramatically off centre, thus one wonders if there's a south aisle hidden inside, but as it turns out, there isn't.
Entering the church reveals more of its idiosyncrasies, the nave is one open space without aisles and yet the east wall subdivides with a curiously lop-sided effect into two arches, the Norman chancel arch to the left and a smaller pointed arch leading to a small chapel to the right. What's more there is a further Norman arch to the east leading into the chancel thus forming a crossing, so clearly this was intended to be a central tower stopped abruptly at roof level leaving no visible trace externally) and we can only assume it was reduced at some stage or perhaps never finished. It appears therefore that a cruciform church was the original plan and the present south chapel may have originally been a transept, and the later opening into the nave formed when that part of the church was extended to its present width, presumably in the 14th century. All these irregularities do make this church a particularly intriguing architectural puzzle.
The chancel contains some eye-catching woodwork with carved bench ends aplenty, but only a couple of pieces are genuinely medieval, the rest all the playful invention of early 20th century woodcarvers under the guidance of the vicar. Various animals emerge alongside the poppyheads and are best described as rustic but fun. There are a few interesting pieces of old glass here along with memorial brasses and a handsome typically East Anglian 15th century font at the west end of the nave adorned with the emblems of the evangelists.
I must confess I'd not done all my homework on this trip and let the marked church towers on my OS map guide my planned route, and generally seeing as I'd dismissed those marked with a smaller cross (as more recent buildings of less interest so hadn't intended to stop) I was only intending to pass through Eyke en route to my next stop when I noticed a medieval church on my left that definitely warranted further investigation! A complete surprise, but a pleasant one!
Happily Eyke church seems to be kept open and welcoming (in non-Covid troubled times) and the locals I met here were friendly. For more on the church see its entry on the Suffolk Churches site below:-
