Bisnis Syariah – Kepala Daerah Kerja Makkah Arsyad Hidayat membenarkan adanya sapuan angin kencang pada Senin (21/09) malam yang menyebabkan beberapa tenda di enam maktab roboh. Namun demikian, Arsyad memastikan bahwa tenda-tenda tersebut sudah langsung diperbaiki sehingga siap untuk ditempati kembali oleh jemaah haji.

“Tenda jemaah yang roboh segera diperbaiki sehingga bisa ditempati oleh jemaah haji yang saat ini sudah mulai berangkat ke Arafah,” jelasnya, Selasa (22/09).

Jemaah haji Indonesia mulai diberangkatkan ke Arafah Selasa (22/09) dalam tiga tahapan. Tahap pertama diberangkatkan pada pukul 08.00 waktu Arab Saudi, kedua 12.00, dan ketiga 16.00.

Menurut Arsyad, robohnya tenda hanya terjadi di enam maktab saja, yaitu maktab 8, 9, 21, 35, 36, dan 48. Kondisi kerusakan tenda pada keenam maktab itu beragam, namun secara umum sudah dilakukan perbaikan hingga bisa segera ditempati jemaah haji.

Terkait adanya pemberitaan tentang terjadinya kebakaran dan evakuasi besar-besaran di Makkah, Arsyad memastikan bahwa informasi tersebut tidak benar. Seluruh jemaah saat ini dalam kondisi siap untuk diberangkatkan menuju Arafah.

Menanggapi hasil pantauan DPR bahwa air cooler masih kurang, Arsyad mengatakan bahwa kondisi saat ini masih jauh lebih baik dibanding tahun sebelumnya. Tenda jemaah pada haji 2014, tidak dilengkapi dengan air cooler, sedang pada tahun ini sudah ada. Kalau dinilai kurang, Arsyad mengatakan bahwa akan melakukan evaluasi efektifitas penggunaan air cooler itu saat ini. Hasil evaluasi itulah yang nantinya akan dijadikan bahan pertimbangan untuk perbaikan di tahun yang akan datang.

Terkait karpet yang berlubang, Arsyad menjelaskan bahwa sampai tanggal 7 Dzulhijjah kemarin, muassasah memang masih mempersiapkan dan info terkait itu sudah dikoordinasikan ke pihak maktab agar bisa segera ditindaklanjuti. (rio)

A bit of history –

The old sign for the Agua Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana on the back of the California Theatre in downtown San Diego. I can remember the sign there from the 60’s. The racetrack hosted both horse and greyhound racing from 1929 until 1992, ceasing horse racing but continuing with greyhound races until 2024.

California Theatre opened in 1927 and became a movie theatre in 1936. In 1976 it closed as a movie theatre and returned to live theatre. The theatre was closed in 1990. Various plans were proposed to renovate the theatre, but none came to fruition. In 2017 a demolition permit was granted, yet the building still stands.

Light in the garden.

A bit of a (happy) little accident! I was having a go at doing a pinhole still life of a tulip, with the idea of creating a vintage daguerreotype image. However, I forgot to fire the shutter and advance the film after the first attempt, so ended up with multiple shots on one frame, and may also have knocked the camera.

My studio has very little natural light, being in the loft, and my normally powerful flash couldn’t deal with f200, requiring 10 or more flashes. Instead I just used the modelling lights of the flash, which I have replaced the original tungsten bulbs with daylight balanced dimmable LED bulbs, which saves electricity, is daylight colour and runs cool, allowing quick changes of modifiers.

A bit of a deviation from my current series at Winton to catch a couple of time relevant scenes. It's Jacaranda time around South East Queensland at the moment and these very popular trees are just coming up to their best. At the same time, a lot of the north side of Brisbane is having its annual kerb side clean up so there is a large quantity of bigger rubbish waiting to be picked up for the tip. We noticed this rather incongruent scene in the suburb of Zillmere with a beautiful Jacaranda shading (if it was a sunny day but it isn't) a large pile of rubbish.

I don't know if other cities and towns have these kerb side clean ups, Brisbane has had them for many years. It is really sad though I find, so much waste, a throw away society if ever there was one with the weekend before the pick-up week being a constant stream of utes and small trucks cruising around looking for stuff that can be reused. At least it hopefully will be reused! The thing I hate to see most is the enormous amount of recyclable metal that gets tossed out and probably buried because they just don't have enough people to sort it.

I've been a bit choked up with the cold today and so, by 1030, I was tucked up in bed, having just gulped down the last of my mug of Lemsip and on the final page of a chapter of Bernard Maclaverty's Lamb, when the phone rang.

"Tommy" said my flatmate, "you have to come into town and take some photo's of this!"

"What is it?"

"They're demolishing a building, it's all lit up, it's the most amazing sight. It's just by the cinema."

I jumped out of bed, threw on some clothes and called Kev, thinking I'd stop by his in the taxi to pick him up.

"Kev, do you have an early start tomorrow?"

"I have to take the car back at 930."

"The car?! Come over! Now!"

When we arrived, it was fairly quiet, and we reckoned they'd stopped for the night. It was an impressive sight, but I wondered whether it was worth sacrificing my early night for. I took a few photographs and then asked one of the men when I should come back to see some of it being brought down: "when the machine's fixed: ten minutes, half an hour." The sight of the Dem-Master in action changed everything: utterly spectacular. It's "neck" is painted with the patterns of a giraffe, but it resembled a dinosaur chewing on the brickwork and tearing away chunks of concrete. I was in awe, and I think my childlike excitement and wide smile endeared me to the workers, who didn't mind my hanging around rather close by for what turned out to be a couple of hours(!)
